I’m 55. I have Multiple Sclerosis. I was a singer/dancer in my youth & saw Fame numerous times as a teen. This song is beyond powerful & every time I share this incredible song, it affects someone in a positive way. It’s incredible and no matter where we are in life, WE ARE THE STARS!
I always cry because I know that the movie is is over. I was 14 taking dance lessons next door to a movie theater. The theater owner let all us dancers in free if we would dance in the isles and in front of the screen during the dance numbers. I saw FAME a over a hundred times. I became a professional dancer. Now I'm a dance instructor. We can ALL be STARS!!!!!
Thank you for sharing that. I can't stop crying reading it. How amazing for someone to allow such freedom and movement and joy and creativity in a world where often things like that are suppressed and suffocated. You are definitely a STAR!
I read this five times already, envisioning dancers in the aisles and I’m grinning from ear to ear!! And you make it as a dancer!! Love love love that you shared this.
I attended a school of performing arts because of this movie. I moved to NYC because of this movie. I had an 18 year career as a professional dancer because of this movie. Thank you Sir Alan Parker for creating a film that inspired an entire generation to "celebrate the me yet to come". We are the Fame Generation!
Wow, same here, art school bc of that movie. No collective actions in the visual arts, though, which disappointed be. Expected all my life be like in Fame from then on and was disappointed (successful, yes, yet disappointed about all the narcissism and lack of solidarity and collective fun)
I will never, NEVER, forget the audience reaction the first I saw this movie, when the screen went black. A thunderous nearly five minute standing ovation. That movie inspired a generation.
I agree....what an exciting, video and spiritual ascension song...I use it as an inspirational song. I love the feel of it. I played it for my late brother, Ralph who played at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. He loved it, too.
But HOW DID THAT ALL TURN OUT FOR THEM? Telling them that THEYLL ALL BE STARS... Face reality..... THEYRE NOT ALL STARS TODAY AND WHILE INSPIRING KIDS IS A GOOD THING THEY ALSO MUST KNOW THAT THEY WILL STUMBLE THROUGH LIFE WE ALL DO.....
I worked in a building right across the street from the HS for the Performing Arts. When these kids hit the street to sing and dance, the sidewalks were crammed with onlookers. I will never forget this time in my life.

Why isn’t this movie given more respect? It’s filled with talented folks & has great music & acting! Fame, the original movie deserves more attention! It’s much better than many of the musicals today!!!
I think it's because the TV series was much better - more in depth. My Mum loved the TV show, but she finds the film a bit too mean and seedy and that some of the relationships don't really ring true in the film. That's just her take - I haven't seen the TV show, so I can't speak for myself.😅
"And I'll look back on Venus I'll look back on Mars And I'll burn with the fire Of ten million stars And in time and in time We will all be stars" 🌌 #RIPIreneCara 🕯
What I like about this clip is it seems everyone is represented... almost all races, men, woman, gay, straight, heavy, thin... EVERYONE... it is how a school should look... Talent comes in all colors and types.
And yet it was all done without the government telling us how to do it and counting everyone’s head and making sure that everyone was represented. They took an honest picture of a performing arts school and presented much of the realities of them and the dreams and hopes
@@sysuiu4533 As a 1984 graduate from PA, I can definitely say that it was an extremely progressive school. Judgement was purely on performance and academic grades. Quite an experience!!!!!
When I tell you I planned my life around this show. I went to Duke Ellington School of the Arts because of this show. And yes it was like the TV show. Rehearsals in the hall way. Dancing in the streets and at pizza hut...oh and on the bus...yes...it was alot of fun and alot of hard work...its an experience I will not ever forget.
yeah i i loved it when i was kid and it came out on tv. well vh1 specifically (i recorde it) and just remembered after the end believing i could do anything my heart desired to go live out my dreams. I wanted to be leroy so bad and i had the biggest crush on coco lol
Yes, I remember as it was yesterday ! November 1980, onboard a Korean Airlines flight from Paris to Seoul via Anchorage. That movie made that long flight shorter.
Fall 1980, Minneapolis. I had graduated HS in '76 as a theater person, and this made my heart swell so much. I hadn't seen the film again since, just pulled it up on Amazon and watched it again. Still good.
WATCHING THESE VIDEOS WITH TEARS IN MY EYES AS I REMEMBER MY COUSIN "TONY".....LEROY TO THE WORLD!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TONY WE REMEMBER, WE'LL NEVER FORGET, WE MISS AND LOVE YOU CONTINUE TO S.I.P.
Kenya Batts I remember seeing him in Bloomingdale's in NYC. He was so cute. He was on an escalator. It was a good moment. It was back in the day and he was in his early 20's. I smiled at him to acknowledge that I recognized him and he smiled back. It was cool!! He was an INCREDIBLE artist. RIP Mr. Gene Anthony Ray.
As a film critic, I was privileged to interview the young leads and director Alan Parker. Yes, watching this film after so many years since its debut gives me goosebumps. I love this film.
That harmony at 1:48 has been stuck in my head for 40 years. And when that choir stands up, dammmmm . . . . . I still get chills. All of it is just sensational.
I had just turned 18, and had just graduated high school when this movie came out. Those lyrics had a PROFOUND impact on my life and how I saw my place in it. I was a theatre kid then, I’m a theatre kid now and forever-I play this whole soundtrack on every opening night of any show I’m working on, and this song, 42 years later, is just as thrilling, just as inspiring.
Lee Curreri is a phenomenal musician; this number is a perfect example of his 'Bruno bounce'!! He seems to live & feel every note he plays. Having seen him play live recently at the UK 40th anniversary reunion, he STILL does this.....though slightly gentler now 40 years on!! I watched him in awe of his musical skills! (Oh, and he is still gorgeous too!)!!
I graduated high school in 1980. I have vivid memories of sitting in the old Ziegfield Theater in NYC, watching this film, and being enthralled. Here's the thing: "PA" -- as the school was called in those days -- is a FREE and PUBLIC high school, part of what was then called the Board of Education (now the Department of Education). You had to audition or submit a portfolio of your work to gain acceptance. The old PA -- HS for the Performing Arts -- was literally in Times Square. The old, seedy, rundown Times Square with the junkies, addicts, drug dealers and working girls. Alan Parker's vision of this film is astonishing. Look at those young faces in this clip, and the stunning diversity of the faces -- white, asian, black and brown -- which you rarely saw. Diversity was a thing at PA before it became a thing. And the immeasurable talent of what were presumably high school students. This was long before the cheap sentiment and artificiality of High School Musical and Glee. This film changed my life, and I will always be indebted to Alan Parker for bringing this to the screen. God rest him, and Gene Anthony Ray, Irene Cara, and all the others featured in this film who are no longer with us.
The ending hits hard, especially now in the wake of the fact that we have lost Irene Cara and Gene Anthony Ray, alongside a good chunk of the cast who played the staff. It is really haunting to see their younger selves alongside a group of other young people singing about their hopes & dreams for the future, and now the young people featured here are now in their 50’s and 60’s, old enough to be parents & grandparents of high school age kids now, and many of them are now around the same age as much of the school’s staff. It’s a reminder that time moves by quickly, and that we should make every minute of it count. Don’t weep and feel sad, be happy about your future. It’s really impactful seeing it on RUclips; I cannot imagine the impact it must have on the people who saw this movie in theaters in 1980. I wish I could have seen the movie when it first came out, but alas, I was born in 1999. I remember singing this song at a middle school choir concert (with just a piano accompaniment) when I was around I would say 11 or 12 years old, and I had NO idea it was from a movie up until a few years ago. This gives me nostalgia for my middle school years, and I wonder what my peers are up to now.
Before there was Glee, there was Fame. And it was good. It was really good. The characters were likable, every story had a great lesson, the kids were actually really talented, the teachers were cool. And then there was the pure, raw, magical, shining, incredible talent of Gene Anthony Ray. RIP, Gene. Your star still shines brightly in another dimension. We miss you on this one a lot.
This is one of the songs of my youth. It always brought a tear to my eye reminding me of my dance family but especially after hearing the news today. RIP Miss Irene. You were extraordinary!!!
The joy of music is contagious. This is such a celebration of the human spirit. People raising their voices in song lifts up the soul and makes you want to fly. This is amazing.
For me what makes this so powerful is it's authenticity. Those aren't a bunch of actors pretending to play and sing and dance. They are all actually playing and singing for real. The conductor is really conducting. None of it is pretend for the cameras. The soloists aren't all prefect. They sound like real humans
When movies really were movies and entertainment was thus. No reality nonsense, just joy, good script writing and pure unadulterated acting. What a pity all that is lost now. Classics never die though and so we can return to this whenever we want.
@@apfelprincess45 I'm sad that I was never able to relay to the director how much this movie meant to me. He made another great movie in Come See The Paradise. I highly recommend it.
That's how I see it, too, but my friends who were at Art Schools at that time perceived that differently btw. They say they were thinking "what is Irene Cara doing in a Hollywood Movie?"
I definitely am another one here of the Fame Generation! I was in professional school at the time this film came out -- and all of my close friends and I identified with this... we all were in the same program together... living in a depressed area of the city, pursuing our goals and dreams in school together. This film, and the music, gave me hope. And now, all these years later, I've been fortunate enough to pursue my dreams in writing and composing. No matter how old one gets, there is always the opportunity to "celebrate the me yet to come!".
Fame is not just a movie. It is a historic landmark and will forever be associated with American history of the 70's. Unlike modern movies which are about silly special effects and shallow and superficial plots... Fame is about talent, drama, youth and humanity. It has not aged a bit and some of the directors and producers who make movies nowadays should be obliged to watch Fame in shame.

OMG! It's been over 40 years since the movie came out and I am 72 years old. I still thoroughly enjoyed re-listening to this performance. I came across a performance of "I Sing the Body Electric" at some Grammy award ceremony including Cyndi Lauper. But this original version is still the best. The youth, the energy, the exuberance, the dance set on a small, tight high-school type stage, and the clear, piercing singing was just perfect.
I literally grew up listening to this song. I attended Juilliard School of Music in 1984, just after this movie (and subsequent show) came out. And it has shaped me forever.. RIP Irene Cara… 💔😔❤️❤️❤️
38 years ago I sat in a cinema and watched "Fame" and you know what? I've rarely seen a movie since that was as uplifting and meaningful and what's more, I never forgot this particular track. Still sends shivers down my spine. Fabulous!

@@RalphDaVillain I guess I’m looking at it as a musical movie because during some of the critical parts of the movie, there was a song attached to the scene.
@@dianamontero6931 I, too, see this as a musical for sure. LOTS of music and songs, with many of them used to help with plot points or character development. Not just background/soundtrack tunes.
There is hardly a movie song more "electrifying" than this! At the end of the song you literally feel like an electric shock seeped into your body and shook it all over!
The best part about this performance is the fact that it’s the unexpected ending of the movie . While watching you would expect after school highlights of what the kids were up to but no it goes dark at the end. This is the true brilliance of the movie . ( P.S a legendary 42 year old movie )
I will never forget my mama swinging me around by the arms in the living room of my childhood home to this song at full volume, core memory right there and I know I will cherish those memories once she’s gone
I'm hanging on to this song for my big move to another country in 5 weeks, to start a new life. Irene Cara, you have inspired me since I was 13. I am 51 now. Thank you!
Have been thinking of the 80's a lot lately, miss them so much. Do you notice how "diverse" this cast was? And no one thought anything of it, it just WAS. It didn't have to be thrown in your face or argued over or debated over - it was totally natural. I long for those times when it was so simple and accepted without argument...sniff...
Thanks for that great memory. We performed this at my high school graduation - the choir sounded SO GOOD that night. I'll never forget how proud and happy I felt being a part of that experience.
The show, the star in this piece and the song inspired my son to pursue a career in film. Sadly, he didn't live long enough to reach where he was clearly heading. I just felt the need to hear the song.
I'm 55 and I have always loved watching the movie Fame..I'm watching it right now and it's Sept 18 2024..the songs are classics including "Fame" n "Out here on my own"
I was 15 or 16 when the movie came out. I started taking dance classes. Unfortunately, small town Ohio didn't have the opportunity for a school like this. I wanted to move to NYC and be a chorus dance on Broadway. Then the fear of bullying came in and the fear that people would assume I was gay. Abandoned that dream out of fear. I always wonder what it could/would of been like. I ended up becoming a nurse and have been for 38 years. I am ok with my life, but seeing this makes that feeling come back. I'm so glad things have changed somewhat. It still isn't perfect, but a whole lot better than the 80's.
I haven’t seen this scene in YEARS..I was teenager when this came out, and was newly learning cello when I finally saw this on HBO, way back when HBO was new. I happened upon this today and for some reason, I was reduced to tears, thinking about how much I loved this hearing this scene every time I watched.
My 5 month old granddaughter loves this song, as much (I think), as I do. When she’s fussy and I play it, she settles right down to listen. Gives me chills, and I feel the love
I am still a performer to this day because of this movie. It inspired me to train and even though I am a part time professional actor I have had performance on TV and Movies shown in all parts of the world. RIP Irene Cara.
Why is this wonderful film so rarely shown on television? It has so many themes that are and will always be relevant. This song and the film are timeless. 👍
I’ve been returning to this song regularly as of late. I love everything about the movie and tv show. This scene: the dancing, singing, musicians, and so much more. It revives me.
Saw Fame in the movies when I was 11 and this song has stuck over the years. Not sure why, but thinking about it now. Glad RUclips exists to bring me back
I’m 37 and I still can’t over how much impact these types of the movies had on me growing up , fame, flashdance, footloose, dirty dancing, adventures n babysitting, girls just want to have fun, ghost , grease, the list of endless. They really don’t make films like this anymore the new ones jst don’t seem to get to u like these ones did , fairwell 80s/90s I miss the innocence and the absolute nostalgia of it all 😢
Nothing like the original. Nothing. I have lost count how many times I’ve seen Fame. Just a phenomenal movie. Brilliant casting, acting, the music - just so much talent. “I’m gonna live forever” - yes you will!

This is my favourite song in the film
Mine too!
@@bethmccrossan6385 The movie was more "real" while the TV show was more formulaic in my opinion. The movie far superior.
I agree
One of the most underrated songs, from an underrated movie. Love this so much.
Ray Stone Absolutely true. This movie never got the credit it deserves.
I'd say under appreciated. It got excellent reviews.
BIG-TIME underrated song
Never under rated... just undersung...
Well said!! So true.
It bewilders me that this incredible song did not win the Academy award.
This brings back such happy memories. I loved the film and the TV series. Pure talent, energy and fun!!!

I agree! And all disciplines in the "arts" were represented too!- Singers, dancers, musicians
It was a time where people DID live and work together without all this woke shit
@@sysuiu4533 As a 1984 graduate from PA, I can definitely say that it was an extremely progressive school. Judgement was purely on performance and academic grades. Quite an experience!!!!!
@@sysuiu4533 You must be forgetting all of the terrible things that happened back then, whether or not we were using the word “woke.”
My parents got married that year. As a 41 year old, tears start falling down every time I see this scene
One of the very best cinematic finales ever.

So awesome to hear! Thank you for confirming that there is still hope!

Fall 1980, Minneapolis. I had graduated HS in '76 as a theater person, and this made my heart swell so much. I hadn't seen the film again since, just pulled it up on Amazon and watched it again. Still good.

You and me both! I am a choruster
Same here - the choral entrance is amazing. The song and the dance build to a crescendo at "We are the Emperors now" - such a great moment.

AMEN!!!
“ I glory in the glow of rebirth “, that line alone is amazing 🥲!!!!
I thought it was a Walt Whitman Poem
Before there was Glee, there was Fame. And it was good. It was really good. The characters were likable, every story had a great lesson, the kids were actually really talented, the teachers were cool. And then there was the pure, raw, magical, shining, incredible talent of Gene Anthony Ray.
RIP, Gene. Your star still shines brightly in another dimension. We miss you on this one a lot.

Glee could NEVER touch FAME.....not even close!
This is one of the songs of my youth. It always brought a tear to my eye reminding me of my dance family but especially after hearing the news today. RIP Miss Irene. You were extraordinary!!!
Godspeed Irene Cara! Thanks for the music and your gift that you shared with all of us! 💝
A cast that actually looked relatable, not Hollywood fakes. What a concept!
Spot on. Have u noticed how Alan Parker made sure all the kids were given good and equal screen time.
Yes everyone looked like average kids, not super polished and glamorous
That's how I see it, too, but my friends who were at Art Schools at that time perceived that differently btw. They say they were thinking "what is Irene Cara doing in a Hollywood Movie?"
I feel sorry for kids who don’t know this kind of music or 70s music. We were so lucky. What an incredible song.
For all who passed away. Ty for your sacrifice. You passed the torch. I hold it with honor.
Um Fame came out in 1980…

So true about the diversity. It just happened back then.
diversity was the standard - we had that rainbow connection
Diversity in NYC was standard for centuries. Port cities are like that. Elsewhere in 80s America, not so much. Was there.
Thanks for that great memory. We performed this at my high school graduation - the choir sounded SO GOOD that night. I'll never forget how proud and happy I felt being a part of that experience.
RIP, Irene Cara, and thank you for the magical memories

One of the great musical finales actually
I haven’t seen this scene in YEARS..I was teenager when this came out, and was newly learning cello when I finally saw this on HBO, way back when HBO was new. I happened upon this today and for some reason, I was reduced to tears, thinking about how much I loved this hearing this scene every time I watched.
I cannot think of this movie without tears, God bless Irene, RIP
One of my all time favs. I’ve heard this song more times than I can count over the years and it still gives me chills every single time.
Never realized before the the actor who plays Montegomery was the same actor who played Dr. Romano on ER!
I loved ER and the character, Dr. Romano was such a perfect ass as a person, but a brilliant doctor....go figure!
Still the best musical finale to any movie, in my opinion.
Saw Fame in the movies when I was 11 and this song has stuck over the years. Not sure why, but thinking about it now. Glad RUclips exists to bring me back
I sang The Body Electric for my 58th birthday yesterday!!!!!! I loved the 80's!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🤩💖🥳🤩
Damn, they were great times.
