What a great idea! I work at a dump where these come in regularly every spring. Since you have given me the idea I think I will run with it and make me a greenhouse. Never have enough of them in northern BC!
Please consider posting on local groups and see who else may benefit! I’m sure there’s many of us who would grow more food if we had access to a free resource like this
@@charlieadams1313 In a small town it's amazing how fast word gets around if something works, one doesn't have to say anything most times. It will be great to see people recycle them for sure. Sadly, in northern BC it is illegal in most dumps to let people recycle, you know, liablity is all about protecting us... Our dump is one of two remaining where it is legal to recycle metals etc.
We did this two years ago. Most expensive part was the plastic. Everything else was repurposed from around our yard etc. Added misting system and permanent beds this year. Northern BC Canada
Thank you for making this! I have to revive a 20 year old steel hoop house that didn’t use wiggle wire and has most of the wood missing! Thanks thanks thanks!
Have two shells just sitting here without the covers. Been wanting to do something like this myself but with shade cloth instead. Live in low desert zone 9b. Gets to 117 + at times.
I've done the same this past year in my back yard and had the exact same issue you did. The hurricanes here in Newfoundland did the job on mine and it ended up flying into my neighbours backyard. I had to rebuild it, cemented anchors in the ground and used ratchet straps to keep it down. I'm currently building my raised beds and should be all set for a nice growing season this year!
Looking good! Those carports are everywhere around here. What a fantastic repurposing idea. I’m already half finished with my pallet, deep bed, cattle panel hoop house. Hope to finish it soon. That Canadian polar air is heading down here to Tennessee this weekend. It will be nice to see yours when it’s completed. Happy New Year my friend!
This brought back memories! My friend started a farm and asked me to help him refurbish the aviary buildings by turning them into greenhouses. We did pretty much the same things only we had a concrete flooring already laid. We still secured it with wood bottom framing and the same wiggle wire. We built wood framing on the ends though with a solid doors. I was laughing about the wind... we live in Austin, TX and getting a day without some wind is just not happening. It doesn't take much to turn it into a sailboat. It was quite an adventure! I loved watching y'all build this, and I'm sure your chickens love you for building it! You made it look much easier than I remember it.
I have been watching others on RUclips build with plastic pvc and that seems a little to week and getto to me. This is a perfect solution. I believe I will purchase 4 car shelters and build them end to end but I will use cement anchors, temporary but will last years if needed. Thanks so much, what a great idea, I also love the wiggle wire, never knew it existed.
It depends where you are. Plastic may work where there is no snow or hurricane winds at times and you want a short term, hopefully for the season structure. You can find the wiggle wire by searching for greenhouse suppliers. If you are going to buy 4 car shelters you may find it more advantageous to buy a used greenhouse.
Cool idea, using a portable carport frame. I'm planning a lean-to style greenhouse at the end of our house (SW orientation) made from cattle panels and anchored to old shed skids.💗
Even though those are known colloquially as Quebec garages, they are not rated for snow load... (Specially with the damage yours endured.) Dozens collapse every year, and I know of at least 2 fatalities in the Gatineau... When I built mine, I started with 3 frame sets and halved the distance between, and added a ridge beam on 2 4x4 posts... Please be careful Stefan, keep the snow cleared off and do it from the outside with a pushbroom. Both fatalities I mentioned were people pushing up from inside to clear the snow... And please consider adding a ridge beam.
Great idea, we strengthened the damaged ones with 2x 3s and used truck straps to keep sides from spreading. We always remove snow but great suggestion to do it from outside after a big snowfall. I’ll add a couple of posts under the ridges, thanks.
Wiggle wire is genius! How about putting those hay bails all around the greenhouse on the outside? They will protect from wind and cold temps. Happy New Year Stefan!
I was totally thinking about doing this. seems like a great way to throw up a poly tunnel/simple greenhouse. throw some vapor barrier or something over it.
Thank you! That's so helpful! I have a much smaller car port and you helped me see that I may actually be able to make this idea work! I look forward to seeing how you add the door. Also I am near Dallas Texas and will need to cover it with shade cloth during our 100 degree summers. That particular car port/greenhouse would mainly be used to extend my growing period through the winter. I have a second car port that I cover with only shade cloth to extend my growing period through the killer hot summer months.
Best thing I´ve found so far in transparent plastic tarps, are the building kind. But those are in our local stores here typically just 2,7-3 m wide. What category of shop did you find that nice wide one and what name of appliance did they call it ?
Canadian source for anchors , wiggle wire and wiggle wire trough piece! Stephan this is such an economical way to get your plants started and keep your chickens warm with the IBC tote water heaters
I had a weather deadline project too! And got it done! Here I can order a hightunnel from farmers friend for the same price a carport would cost me. So when I get there I'll be doing that...just have to figure out which part of the yard to put it in 🤔🤔🤔 Have you thought about putting a camera in with the chickens for a day, I'm sure many people would watch it for the enjoyment
Live camera is in the plans once we get internet access that’s reliable. True a new shelter would be about the same price as new greenhouse of same size. The point in the video is that there are lots of used shelters for cheap available.
Hi Stefan, I'm looking to keep chickens and ducks in my gothic hoops house this winter, but I'm worried about the moisture accumulation being a problem for chickens, and about predators. Any thoughts?
We leave a small door open all winter so the birds can go outside if they choose. It’s hard to keep a greenhouse air tight so there will be ventilation. Abundant dry bedding is important, even building it up over winter. The details I show in the video of keeping chickens in -34C are important (foil insulation, roosts above, small space of shelter in a larger space is easy for the birds to keep warm overnight, abundance of grit…
I bought one of those tarp buildings and the tarp is shot now so I’m thinking making it in a greenhouse after watching this video. It’s just a little one like 8’ by 10’. How long will the clear plastic will last before putting on a new one? Thanks again for all your videos! Happy New Years!
Depends on the thickness of plastic, most greenhouse plastic is 6mil which should last 3-5 years, you can always use hardware store drop cloth and double layer it.
Good timing for us to see this video. We bought an old carport, probably the same that you have (double harnois) and we want to convert it in greenhouse next spring. Right now, chickens are in, but we only have the original carport plastic on it. We will command a greenhouse plastic at Harnois for the model of carport we have. Have you take one of there model to fit perfectly or you have buy a plastic elsewhere? Have you compare the price and the amount of work involve custom made vs homemade? tank you a lot for sharing your knowledges; it's really nice :)
Do you tape the joints to prevent them to come apart or just to make them smoother so they don't damage the plastic? If it's to prevent the pieces to come apart, maybe a metal screw could do the job better.
Thanks for sharing and happy new growing season! Couple of questions..is there a measurement to look for when buying plastic cover to tell how much sun will come through to plants and how thick/durable it will be against weather as well? Do you have to balance the two or do they not go against each other? Also would it have not been better to use some old cable or wire or chain rather than rope for your ground tie down as won't the chickens peck it and sun rot and the water from greenhouse/decomposition and chickens winter rot it to quickly? Is it a special treated rope?
Ive always heard ventilation is extremely important for poultry. Are there vents on this greenhouse? I imagine that the breakdown of the hay, apples and manure is going to elevate co2 and possibly methane, etc. Is this a concern if there isn't good ventilation? I really enjoyed this project. One day I will do one!
Absolutely. Left a few holes near top. For methane and ammonia the rule of thumb is to add bedding before it smells to balance carbon to nitrogen levels.
Like the whole idea, specially the part with the wicked wire...👍
Happy new year and may we all have abundant harvests next year.
Absolutely thanks, blessings to you too.
Nice job. I like the dead man bracing idea. You best protect your plastic from your chickens otherwise they will make a lot of holes.
I guess our chickens are well occupied since they don’t bother with the plastic.
What a great idea! I work at a dump where these come in regularly every spring. Since you have given me the idea I think I will run with it and make me a greenhouse. Never have enough of them in northern BC!
If that’s your situation save a few to give you a 50’ or 100’ since plastic is usually available in those sizes and you only need 2 ends.

Shade cloth doesn't catch the wind like plastic does.

They work great as the skeleton for a greenhouse. Currently building a 12' x 28' greenhouse from a portable garage frame.

Dubois Agrinnovation in St-Remi, Quebec. They ship to all N America. May be a custom cut to fit your shelter.

Where is the best place in Canada (best around Montreal) to find plastic and the wire to attach? Thank you

Good food and entertainment.

Just so they don’t damage plastic. We use a lot of duct tape but don’t count on it to hold pipe together.

No just thick enough to last, chickens have so much they don’t bother pecking them. The plastics sold have ratings for % light transmission.

December 31 and no snow in Quebec wow
Haha the power of film. Was filmed a few weeks earlier. Yes white Christmas but not much snow or cold yet.
