Sorry but was the video “can you teach in VN without a degree” produced in 2021? I saw a 2021 popping at some point and was wondering.
I read the regulations are getting stricter lately as they are asking for 3 years of teaching experience abroad. Correct me if I’m wrong.
@Arnaud Nadon I can still get you jobs without a degree if your from a native speaking country or European country. It can still be done. It's getting harder but definitely still possible. Non native no degree. Can't do anything for you. So if you have a passport from US, UK, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand or a European country I can help. If not can't.
Does South Africa still count?
@AJ if you're white, the Vietnamese will look the other way on documents. Non white South African, it will be really hard. SA passport isn't highly regarded, but it's certainly possible. We have a service for reliable contacts in HR here.

Loved your video....right to the point. I used to teach english in Korea around 20 plus years ago while I was in the service. It is EXACTLY like you described...lots of kids running around and you where there mostly to entertain them. I learned the language a bit and was great with the parents. I picked up LOTS of side classes for ridiculous money compared to my military salary. I bookmarked your page for future reference. I'm 56 and looking to possibly retire soon...I'm gonna check out Vietnam. I have a decent amount of $$$ set aside but wouldn't mind having a 20 hour a week gig while I was retired. I would be an easy sell...real teaching experience...6ft blonde American in decent shape. Yeah, I know that bullshit counts in Asia. My only question would be, ballpark, around how much do you think you can make a month doing this. Just an estimate would be great....Thanx.
Hey Paul, nice to meet you. Do you have a degree? In Vietnam, these days, it's still possible, but getting harder without it. If you do, then we'd have a lot of options. If not, it's still workable, just more complicated because the work permit will be expensive. You can normally get between 1500 and 2500 depending on who you work for and "appearances." Most people make around 1800 for 20 hours a week, but different people and different work loads can be more or less obvious. You can pm me on my Facebook fan page Reborn Abroad. We can discuss. @@rebornabroad I'm glad to hear that my friend. You and your girl need to come up my way to Lao Cai/Sapa and let me take you all out for dinner and adventure. Waterfalls, rice paddies, mountains or just cool spots to sip a drink and chill. There is money to be made out here man. it's an untapped market and I'm looking for a future business partner, advisor and people with vision and experience in the near future with some ideas about schools in Sapa. I want to cater to a special type of parent and be unique and the first language center.
It's very hard to get this done due to the Ethnic tribes like Dao and H'mung not wanting to lose their culture and language, or be influenced by westerners but I have been networking and building connections over the years here getting my name and reputation known. These small rural Tier 3 and 4 cities are easy to get known, so its important to keep face, keep your word and play the game and don't be a piece of Sh*T as you know.
I believe with the right agreements, money paid, permits with the local government and respect of the tribes and financial contracts with the elders, following their wishes about not changing their children's culture but simply giving them tools for success through education and spoken language. If this meant we as staff wore certain clothing in honor of the tribes or only taught things they approved, I and my business partner( still to be determined who) can make this work and honor our word. I want a top tier school with no slobs as teachers or people not realizing the work that went in to getting the school made. I think you would be a good judge of character being from the south and around the hustle of HCMC. I can imagine the types of scams, bad people and lazy teachers you have had to endure. I could use your help to ne honest for the North is VERY traditional and you just don't see that kind of stuff up here except from dumb @ss backpackers visiting Sapa.
This is a work in progress but It's a goal my girl and I both share and are working on. We have already scouted out locations and looking in to the process and permit cost. Things are a lot more "by the book" here on the China borer so things have to be solid and the right people happy. I cant promise this dream of mine will happen for it all comes down to the tribes of Sapa but if it does, I know you are a business man, have connections and experience I lack and maybe could use a change of scenery.
Sapa could get a language center started by early 2025 and THERE IS money to be made I assure you. Let me know your thoughts sometime brother.

I speak english absolutly fluently and don't have a german accent. How much do you think I can make an hour? Btw I am also thinking about conducing this as a springboard to build my own business. So it's tightened a bit, but definitely, most things are still possible. This applies more to Saigon, where facilitation is possible. Other parts of the country it will depend on the local authorities, but I can definitely assist with employment. It's a good time for money because despite the opening, they have tightened a lot of work permit, tax, and banking policies to deal with the easing of the tourist visas. So definitely a good to make money if you can get the work permit.

Now here you are half a century later living your dream successfully there. Very interesting. @David Jackson I think it's largely an indicator of class, not knowledge. I started as a TEFL teacher now I have my own business and live location independent. God willing I will continue to be successful. Hard work and hustle took me from a nightclub bouncer to an international consultant. If you ever have a chance to return Vietnam has changed a lot. The people love Americans as China is the most pressing concern they face. Many in the south wish the Americans had stayed. Certainly not the narratives I heard growing up. The world moves forward.

Totally. VN is a place for people with a street hustler mentality, not for a regular highly educated first world guy.

How do you protect your Bachelors degree and other important paper documents from being damaged while backpacking around the world teaching English?
I don't teach anymore. When I came to Vietnam, I didn't have a degree. I finished it while teaching. Ironically, my business took off, and now I don't need it, but we keep important documents in an organized folder in our suitcase. We have a waterproof fireproof bag.

I went to Taiwan in 1990, and it was exactly the same as Vietnam today 😆... I taught for 25 years in Asia never needed any paperwork or any BS like that...plenty scamming in the industry...
Vietnam teaching companies are pretty racist around hiring. They are somewhat flexible around strong nationalities, but African countries, it's very hard to get them the work permit. Even with documents. Mentality is somewhat closed. Of course, though, if you have enough $$$ nothing is a problem

Hey brother, we have a consulting service for perspective expats. We can arrange reliable employment contacts, visa, housing, etc. You can get a work permit until 60, and even then, sometimes coffee money can stretch that a bit. I know situations where people have gotten their work permits past 60. Age discrimination is big, but if you have a degree, white, or UK passport, you will be ok. The reality is that the market is big, but everything is about your value. Your value isn't based on ability or knowledge but on if people like you or not. If you're older but in good shape. It will matter less. If you're older and fat, they will use you to treat you badly or just abuse you. Obviously, international schools and such are different, but most average centers or public schools everything will be very superficial. Hey 👋 yes some parts of Vietnam have cooler climates, but those places have very few jobs. More desirable tourist places are nearly impossible to make enough to live. Hanoi has seasons, but the cooler months pollution is very bad. Da Nang and central Vietnam have cooler months but are highly competitive for very low pay. It's more like substance living. Da Lat had great weather, but pretty much zero work (not literally but close). Buon Ma Thuot would be an ok option if you don't mind very small town mentality. Hey buddy, I've got the pertinent motive as you got. I want to kick off as an "ESL TEACHER" there, however, I don't want to end this shit being a teacher for the rest of my life. Accumulating experiences, and after getting all the keys to this whole mechanism I would like to turn this into business. I'm on the way to getting my bachelor's degree this year plus I've had experience in teaching. Well, The only obstacle is that my passport is an utter fuck up as I'm from Pakistan. As you mentioned in this video, even if you're from Pakistan or any other African developing country you can get the job because of the demand in this ginormous market, however, they wouldn't pay you well they don't value such countries. Now my question would be:
a) Is there any other ground strategy or any pragmatic technique to get a boost in your wage?
b) I'm willing to teach mature students in high school and I can also consider Middle school as well, so can you get a job directly to these levels or being a novice you should start from scratch and teach kids to scale up the ladder, Is it necessary?

You should pay no taxes every job should be quoted in Net. If they talk to you about taxes, tell them it's their problem. 99% of the jobs here the employer pays the tax, and what you get quoted is the after-tax rate

Hey, I like the video. My wife is Vietnamese and I will go there to live with her on TT family visa. They say I can easily get TRC because she can sponsor me. Do you know maybe can I get TRC before I find job or I need to have job to apply for TRC. And is it possible to get job on TT visa or I need bussines visa?

You sound like me when I was younger. You don't need a degree at all, it just helps A LOT in CERTAIN situations.
Helps for sure, but largely, it's a scam. Depending on the degree field, of course, but for teaching in Vietnam, it's still not necessary it's a country where rules can be flexible

Not unless you know someone. Most teachers with no degrees now are working on business visas. It depends on who you know. We can get you a work permit if we find a company that's interested in you, but they'd need to he flexible as it would require changing your position in the company.
What about the 3 years experience requirement,do they want that for English teachers?

We can still do it, just not sure how much longer. It's getting really difficult now, but like anything in Vietnam, there is always a way. Being non white makes it much much much harder advice. The Vietnamese are pretty racist around hiring. That being said, we can still help. We have contacts with recruiters who will hire non white teachers. The no degree thing will make it much harder, but if you can get an exemption, you'd be able to work. So, there are strategies. Feel free to pm me if that's of value.
I think you might struggle for being a Vietnamese-American.
I'm asain-american and was able to successfully get ESL work w/no degree for the 5 years I was in VN. I worked about 24hrs/week and made roughly 2400usd$/month. The company i worked for hired a California born and raised Vietnamese and rudely demanded he work 40hrs/week and make half my monthly salary. While he was still making more than local native Vietnamese the substantial difference in workload and pay between us was enough for him to pass on ESL. My example here is a single English center in Saigon so please don't let that situation discourage you but please be aware that the likelihood and probability of you finding ideal working conditions will be a lot tougher. im an amerian born viet as well and im currently making about 1400usd/month but im only teaching 12-14hrs a week. I can work more to make more but I also work remotely for another company and mainly teach for fun and my own edification.

No degree it's getting a lot harder. If you're a native speaker, for sure, you can still get work. If your non native no degree, it will be nearly impossible. If you are native and can land a teaching job, there are ways to get your work permit. It's Vietnam, so it's all about $$$ and who you know.

If you are not white it's much much harder but if you legit have no accent you can find a job. Probably better off working with me or flying in and looking in person. I know Indian people who have gotten jobs. Indians tend to be looked at like Filipinos so the pay will be less than a native speaker. If you are highly qualified you can do better. No degree, non-white, non-native you will be abused and largely ignored. If you have a degree in anything you'll be ok. Pay can depend on who is interested in you. If they don't take you seriously 800 to 900 a month. If you are young decent looking and speak well 1000 to 1500. Looks and popularity are far more important than qualifications. For Indian people, you are not a top choice but you are not a bottom choice either for Africans or middle east it's way harder.

@One more 30 is young. Get at least a TEFL and be ready for some rejection but if you are there and banging on doors someone will eventually use you for sure.

If you're qualified enough, you can maybe do the same in Vietnam, but the Vietnamese aren't as open-minded as Taiwan or China when it comes to visas for African countries. If you can get in and you're qualified, the market is big.

No one will agree to a w month contact. You need a work permit to work legally in Vietnam that process alone will take more than 2 months.

to get a visa/TRC you need a work permit, to get a work permit you need a degree --- without it you can stay on a tourist visa ...but you'll have to renew it more often than you change your underpants, and its costs! worth it???? seen people come here with big plans --after 4 months of dealing with the government crap they pack it in.... even a normal TRC will set you back a tidy packet
It's who you know, not what you know. It's Vietnam. There is always a way. Believe what you like 👍 👌 work permits are still possible, and there is no degree as of this term. It's just more expensive and complicated. Still absolutely can be done.
It's almost impossible to get a job teaching English in Vietnam without a degree. Was there for almost a year. And the teaching is so disorganized anyway... Textbooks that are years out of date and the kids have read them 4 times already. Horrible. And it's true, the Vietnamese teachers are very resentful of you, as they work all hours of the day and you swan in there, laugh and throw a ball and get paid 3 times as much, then leave.

I am all about taking people as individuals, judging people on merit, etc, but the Vietnamese I work with won't even give them the time of day. I would just get b1tched out for even recommending them. That's reality. I get messages from these people all day, and to be honest, I just block them. I used to try and explain the situation, but really, it's not my problem, and I can't dedicate time to it. The Vietnamese are not going to change. 99% of the time, thesr guys dont have money, so I just stopped even bothering. It's just a massive waste of my time. I feel for them, but its not my problem their country doesn't have goof diplomacy with Vietnam. I feel like it's better not to waste their time or mine. People blow up on me when I tell them I can't help them, so now I don't even bother. You'd think that being honest would be appreciated, but it's not. If the Vietnamese did hire them as you said they'd just completely abuse them and send them to some hell hole in the provinces. Pay them starvation wages (if they pay them at all) and likely take their passports.

Even there was an American citizen also who doesn't want to work as a teacher and prefers asking for money. I met a Canadian, he really prefers doing gardening for 1 million vnd per week when he can get 1500 to 2000.

I can arrange employment but only with degrees. I have the contacts in visa related stuff to get the work permit if you have an employer willing to hire. Thailand sucks for working, even either of documents, so I don't really bother. Vietnam is really the best market for teaching.

I'm not as concerned about degrees as I am about police and integrity checks to weed out predators.
Sadly, there is no such thing. Although I do know of a good charity in Cambodia that goes after predators. A Jujitsu brother of mine is involved with them. Most of the people I worked with when I was teaching never struck me as the type. Though I am certain it exists. Most of the people I worked with were either older guys married to Vietnamese, entrepreneurs trying to make some income until a business takes off or young traveler types.

However, there obviously will be terrible companies that'll exploit you and make things difficult since you aren't teaching legally.

Dude, I know I taught English In HCMC for 6 years! Prior to COVID-19. I have also taught in Cambodia for about 6 years and have lived in SE Asia for about !5 years. They are cracking down on agents that try to place people in schools, without degrees who obtain work permits illegally. I didn't need a work permit to teach in either country, and was paid in cash.
