The police department created 10-B overtime for officers where they could be contacted to work private jobs in uniforms. At the same time they took away the police special's authority to give citations. It made 10-B more lucrative to businesses.
This news report fails to explain how SF City Hall and the POA/SFPD colluded to destroy the SF Patrol Special force (founded years before the SFPD). All because SFPD was jealous of the money earned by some Patrol Special officers (at times, over $1 million). Also, SF Patrol Special officers had police powers (issued citations and arrested suspects) until 1994, when the police commission removed that ability. SFPD also demanded Patrol Special wear different uniforms. In 1982, the city approved City Code 10B program, allowing off-duty SFPD to take work away from the Patrol Special. SFPD officers repeatedly harassed Patrol Special officers, sometimes they spray painted insults on the Patrol Special cars. In 2010, SFPD harassed Patrol officer Jane Warner at her home, while in bed dying of cancer. In 2021, the city allowed Sheriffs to join the 10B off-duty program. SF police say they're understaffed, but somehow they're available to work lucrative off-duty hours.
Yes, I don't understand how an officer being available for extra hours relates to this..! I would rather have somebody fresh than somebody who's working overtime. And… Smacks of collusion. Yes, I am from San Francisco. Let's ask Gavin.
Jane Warner was a great Cop not afraid of anything or anyone (and her love of animals was unmatched). And yes the POA and board of supervisors member Aaron Peskin killed the Patrol specials. It was such a great resource. You could call SFPD and not see a cop for hours but call a Patrol Special and they'd be there in minutes. It's all about 10-B overtime.
Hang on! This was an option the whole time??????? Why didn't anyone.... Ah crap! That's it I'm buying this service! Like right now. I'm googling how to sign up for this. $65 is literally nothing for peace of mind!
i heard they charge $100 to apply to be a cop and applicants decreased 93% from 2013. i don’t know of any other jobs out there that charges you to apply
If you defund the police, who you going to call about any crimes? Right a social worker will show up. Do you really think a social worker wants to show up against a criminal with a gun? Dumb of you to say that, defund the police. The real answer is prosecute the criminals. It shouldn't be just in and out within minutes. For instance if someone breaks into a car or robs a place, and gets caught....don't release them right away like have been doing. If they are repeated offenders, like more then once then they need to be locked up for many years. If the state doesn't have the capacity to send them to jail like not enough room, then send them to North Korea.
Good God... when are you going to just give up... the criminals in Sf already know they can Virtually do anything they want & walk away...You waited too long. NYC of all places, adopted a 0 tollerance policy after 9-11 and Cleaned up the Biggest City in the Country .. SF just lets things get worse....
You're wrong. AFter 9-11, Giuliani and the police started racially profiling people and this led to unnecessary deaths, many lawsuits and a city that no longer trusts the police. You are just making stuff up. YOu know nothing of what you are saying. Go away.
@californianorma876 I'm not sure if you're hearing impaired or did not comprehend what they said. He is the last of the "special police " and his area will be taken over by SFPD that is if SF decide otherwise. Yes, bless your heart.😂
Like any Republican town? You'll be fine. Half of America operates like this. Volunteer fire crews are more the norm than the exception in many parts of the country.
As a San Francisco resident I'm not sure I like the idea of privately paid "police" forces. Why not have the City put them on the payroll? How is the money collected from the zones? Is it voluntary? If not, do they service businesses that don't pay? Too many unanswered questions.
The best answer I can give is the SFPD feels above homelessness and they don't want to deal with larceny. A private industry that only makes money if they respond to those calls works.
As a third generation San Franciscan, I can testify and witness that when I was growing up in the 1960s, our neighborhood was able to afford this private security effort, and we understood that the city had much more important things, like riots and peace demonstrations, and we lived in a very, very quiet, safe neighborhood. It was, I believe, considered contributing to the greater community.
Self funded program. Cancelled. Because it's effective? Is SFPD embarassed? Sorry, only at minute 3: but it begs the question...! Growing up near San Francisco State, we kids knew when the local private patrol officer was due to swing around in his private, unmarked vehicle! Perhaps criminals, who just wandered through the neighborhood, didn't know, but we lived in a very safe neighborhood nothing ever happened. If only I could remember what we called him. We had a nickname...... OH, 1964-1976 at least! It was absolutely understood that our neighborhoods could afford these extra patrols, and that would allow the cops to focus on other neighborhoods that could not afford the same.
This is amazing...we need to bring this program back.
New John Carpenter movie Escape from SF with Kurt Russel as police chief.

Every passing day that whole concept of ‘still around’ looms larger and larger
Alan, thanks for answering my call and coming to deal with the crazy person terrorizing our street.
It must be nice to afford your own cops, I'm guessing you voted to defund the police!!??
They need to renew this program! SF needs Batman because it’s really became Gotham city
But Defund the Police 🤣 because democrats always have the best ideas that work out fantastic 🤣 🤣 🤣 NEVER
The ones paying for this service should get to deduct the amount from their taxes for a service they are already paying for and not receiving, if he is the only one left he must be the richest cop in the country
Alan Byard was the last person I knew, to use a beeper. That guy had a beeper when everyone had a cell phone.
The Patrol Specials need to be brought back in greater numbers.
Criminals run the state and city. No services and if you become vigilante they’ll prosecute you for self defense.
We need this program.
Why didn’t the city keep the program? Seems like the kind of thing that would be more helpful now than ever.
Because Defund the police 🤣 democrats always have the best ideas that never work out.

Thank you Allan for always come around where I used to work just on time thank you so much you have helped us in so many hard times
It's one way on getting law enforcement experience with the job market for security and being a LEO

I haven't heard anything about these guys for 30 years.
Greed from city cops. As was mentioned, they wanted the "specials" to disappear so they could corner the off duty overtime security gigs!
Yo, oldtimer! Why didn't you tell us that this was an option all along?? If only I knew!
I thought we were cool...
Hang on! This was an option the whole time??????? Why didn't anyone.... Ah crap! That's it I'm buying this service! Like right now. I'm googling how to sign up for this. $65 is literally nothing for peace of mind!
Perhaps the time is upon us for a return and official re-institution of the storied SF Vigilance Committees...
Sf is in a state of emergency and needs the military to get involved.
get the sheriffs out there more patrolling.
i heard they charge $100 to apply to be a cop and applicants decreased 93% from 2013. i don’t know of any other jobs out there that charges you to apply
i did a google search, it’s illegal in CA to charge job applicant a fee. (California Labor Code Sec. 450(b)
The bad guys: "look around, the cops're into something, you could steal city hall!"
Good luck Allen!
Kenny,
Better to have police officers on patrol he says? With a 600 officer vacancy i dont think he can afford to be picky
The newscaster looks great in this outfit. The pantsuits were dowdy and clownish. This outfit gives her class and elegance. This suits her.
What’s the point if laws don’t get enforced
What's your point? These private security services were able to give out tickets! Unlike you,
LOL… tickets… that will show them
That's a nice Crown Vic, they should keep the program just for that car alone!
I want in!😂 sign me up!!!!
Self driving cars = AI patrol
0:51 he’s caught 6 burglars in the last 3 years? Thank god this almighty crime stopper is keeping us all safe.
How many are good collars? I doubt it. He's not accurate about his arrests.
I believe the implication was that he caught them in the act. And you know that is not going to happen with the police officers.
Cool.
SFPD fought to have the Patrol Specials stripped of their powers and now the city needs them more than ever. Great job SFPD...
I think all San Francisco police officers are a little special 👩🦼
Wouldn't it be better to just refund the police, bring them back on the street, and prosecute the criminals? I know I am old fashioned.
If you defund the police, who you going to call about any crimes? Right a social worker will show up. Do you really think a social worker wants to show up against a criminal with a gun? No one wants to be a cop in SF
@@malvolio01 I know people that are!! So not true for you to say
@@boohere2 I do too. It’s called hyperbole. My point is, they are struggling to get ppl to join and there is a reason.

Wired people rather pay extra money to hire private patrol then paying more property taxes to increase city budget for more police!?

They always do but somehow it comes to bite them in the face💯
Kuffs??
What's the use of having additional police if they won't go after criminals. Waste of taxpayers money.
This is a private security force paid for by private citizens, and does not involve taxes or the city. Bless your heart

City so slow hiring anybody including police
What's next, we need to pay for private firefighters?
Like any Republican town? You'll be fine. Half of America operates like this. Volunteer fire crews are more the norm than the exception in many parts of the country.
So only the rich can afford them seems fair
65 bucks! Even the homeless people can afford this. That homeless guy that he talked down can probably afford to pay this guy to come check up on him.
you honestly telling me homeless/mentally ill people hang out in hunter point/potrero hill/bay view area? yea... i thought so.
the rich can still afford private armed security without Police Special Patrol
Paw patrol ❤
