- I set up my easel high up in a windy spot but the view was worth it.
With lots of chats it was a very enjoyable watercolour plein air painting session .

it is quite an experience to watch you paint! thank you.
Hi,
I’m glad you enjoyed it. It was a wonderful place to paint!
Best wishes, James
You really captured the sense and atmosphere of the place, I like it very much. Learning a lot from watching you, thanks for sharing.
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it. It was a lovely place, I’d love to have that weather in Scotland now!
I’ve given the painting to my daughter who was in the video. A nice memento of a wonderful holiday.
Thanks for watching.
Best wishes, James
Thanks for sharing your talents! Lovely memento of your trip.
Hi Steve,
Glad you enjoyed the painting. It’s one of the wonderful things about painting outdoors on holiday is that you can return home with paintings, that are so personal and memorable.
Best wishes, James
Love watching your creative process James. I have only recently fallen in love with watercolour and I feel blessed to have stumbled upon your videos. You are a great teacher and I love your impressionistic approach.
Very inspiring
Hi Carol,
Glad you enjoyed the video so much. It was a beautiful day at a beautiful spot.
I’m glad you found me. Hopefully I’ll help you to progress to this wonderful impressionistic way of seeing things.
I hope your painting takes on a new lease of life.
I look forward to hearing how it goes.
Best wishes, James
I'm jealous!!!!
Hi Michelle,
Barbados is a wonderful place!
I’m back home now in Scotland and it all seems a long time ago and a different world.
Best wishes, James
@@JamesPotterAboutArt it must have been hard to leave!
Another great video that captures the mood with the use of brush strokes and colour. Playing catch-up and trying to binge watch, but finding I need to slow down and re watch parts of the video to understand why you paint as you do to achieve your style. Still working on the portraits of my children. Thanks for posting such great content.
Hi Mike,
Glad to hear that you’re studying hard. That’s the way to understand what you’re doing, and when you understand you can move forward.
Glad that you’re still painting your children’s Portraits, they are going to be the most personal pictures that you can do!
Keep painting.
Best wishes, James
Just came across your youtube channel and wow! Your enthusiasm and go for it attitude is inspiring. Your loose style and the way your colours mix on the paper is amazing. Love it. When I saw you were at the Crane I had to watch. You are the first artist on youtube I have seen painting in Barbados. My family emigrated to Canada from that beautiful island when I was fifteen. Been in Canada a long time but still miss the weather especially in winter. I will definitely watch your other videos, I know I will learn so much. Hope you had a wonderful time there and tried a rum punch!
Thank you so much for sharing
Hi Stephen,
Thank you very much for your kind words. Barbados is a wonderful place with an amazing climate. It’s an incredible contrast from you living in Canada and I’m sure you have some very fond memories of it.
I did notice that there are large proportion of Canadians at the Crane.
Funny that you mentioned the rum punch, I loved it, and I certainly had my fair share!
Glad that you’ve found my channel, and I hope you enjoy the rest of my videos.
Best wishes, James
love this one james /never known it to be so windy in barbados
Hi Steven ,
Glad you enjoyed my latest video. There was a constant wind at the whole time I was there. Apparently during the summer it stops being windy and feels much hotter.
We were on the south east side of the island as well which is apparently more windy too.
Best wishes, James
Video came out great!
Thanks again!
James
it does seem scary painting outdoor with strangers noticing what I am doing 😅 But I think that’s another level to conquer! The painting you’ve done is lovely indeed ❤
Hi,
It is a challenge to begin with painting outdoors and having people watch you, however, in the end it becomes more normal and enjoyable. I find it fun talking to people and very encouraging.
Best wishes, James
Another great painting James! Hope your legs didn't get too sunburnt in the process.
Hi Stella
Glad you enjoyed the video. I’m getting much better had applying suntan lotion these days. So I was okay !!
Best wishes, James
Bull‘s eye! Infatuated with your colours…and your art
Hi Marie,
Many thanks for your kind words, and I love that you enjoy my work so so much!
I’m back in Scotland now, and the weather is a huge contrast to Barbados. Looking forward to spring.
Best wishes, James
It’s very enjoyable to see a different style of watercolor. The amazing thing is watching the scene come alive.
Hi Lena,
Glad you enjoyed seeing my Watercolour process. I hope it inspires your own watercolour painting.
Best wishes, James
Thanks for taking your vacation time to paint for us! Very enjoyable as always.

Hi Lyn,
Glad you enjoyed it. I did enjoy painting the palm trees.
I’m back in Edinburgh now, looking out at a frosty scene.
How very different!
Best wishes, James
I really like the spontaneous joy of painting on the spot as you present it. I think it may be the best way to learn how to paint.
Hi Gary,
I do enjoy the spontaneous Mark. For me, painting outside is the best way
Best wishes, James
I love the way your painting captures the mood and color of the scene. Especially the tall palm trees! Thanks for sharing your wisdom and expertise as well!
Hi Michael,
It’s been a wonderful trip, with lots of new things to paint!
Best wishes, James
Thanks James and family. Another lovely painting and wonderful narrative. Great of you to keep posting! Enjoy your vacation.
Thank you! Will do!
James
Your videos always teach me new things about painting and being an artist. Thank you and your wife for presenting these lessons. Enjoy your holiday in the sun!
Hi John ,
Glad you enjoyed it. Sadly, our time in Barbados is coming to an end so back to the cold.
Best wishes, James
Awesome!!! Thanks James so much 👏🏻 the row of umbrellas and the people on the beach really added a lot for me.
Hi Laurel,

Lovely painting James, lucky you to be in Barbados painting outdoors 🌴
Absolutely! It’s a wonderful place.
Home very soon sadly.
James
A good instructional video, as always. Thank you.
Hi Dominic,
Glad you enjoyed it. It was great to be out there. Home now in the cold !
Best wishes, James
The video went well! No worries with the cuts. I’m sure all the tourists thought it was quite a treat to watch you paint. I am always thrilled to see it thru to the end. Wish I could paint so confidently outside. I think as my drawing and composition skills progress it will be easier. Thanks so much for all you share. I just love it when you talk about loving a certain mark or part of the painting. It inspires me to try to experience those same feelings when I paint. I hope you find time to swim!
Hi Kathy ,
Great to hear you watch the video right to the end!
There are indeed moments where the pain goes down just right, and I always find that really exciting, but the trick is to recognise it, when it’s gone well, and not paint over it!
I hope you can manage to get out and paint soon.
Best wishes, James
Your really an inspiration. Love this.
Hi Linda,
Glad you enjoyed the video. It really was a wonderful place to paint! Hope it gives you a bit of inspiration to give it a go.
Best wishes, James
Fantastic. You encourage me to be brave!
Hi Susan
That’s great. I hope you’re managing to get outside.
Best wishes James
Hi James, really envious of your stay in Barbados !! I have been enjoying all your palm trees. It reminds me of my trip to Egypt. Keep up the inspiring work. Looking forward to the next 😅
Hi Kieran,
Glad you’ve been enjoying the palm trees. They are great! I would love to do the same trip as your Egypt adventure one day.
Hopefully back up to the Highlands soon!
Best wishes, James
Another great video! No worries about the wind and the cuts. Just love your impressionistic style. And enjoying you being on location in Barbados, as I sit here in New England on a chili winter evening.
Hi Joanne,
Glad you enjoyed the Barbados paintings, it’s wonderful to be here, however it’s drawn to an end now so I’ll be heading back to the cold of Scotland. However lots more trips to come!
Best wishes, James
Great painting, and great vidio editing.
Thank you very much!
Lovely painting . Wonderful the way your brush and paint dance across the paper. Hope you didn’t get too sunburnt!
Hi Noel,
Glad you like the painting. Luckily I haven’t been burnt yet!
Best wishes, James
Thanks James, your understanding of colour is outstanding - I love the way you put it altogether in the picture. I’ve learnt a lot from this painting thanks for interrupting your company to give this demonstration.
Hi Robert,
Glad you enjoyed this video so much. Just preparing to leave back to Scotland now.

Hi Mary,
Glad you enjoyed it.
I love painting this picture, it was one of my favourites for a long time. I’m giving this one to my daughter who came with us, a nice memory for her.
The weather is getting better here in Scotland now, so we’re going to have lots more adventures in our van, getting into the landscape.
Thanks for watching
Best wishes, James
@@marylemley5194
PS, luckily, I didn’t burn!
If you’re still in Barbados - go to Cutters / Roger Goddard is my brother. It’s very near the crane.
Hi Victoria,
It’s been a wonderful stay in Barbados , heading home now, however, I will head over to Cutters, if I manage to come out here again🇧🇧
Best wishes, James
Coconut trees, not palm trees as the chattel lady told you lol! Although of course, coconut trees are a type of palm tree. I have always, being from Trinidad thought it’s so funny how Americans and Brits just call coconut trees palm trees!
That’s one of the biggest things I learnt on my trip to Barbados. It was very interesting talking to the lady about the coconut tree.
You absolutely right, we call them palm trees, but now I don’t 🌴 😅
Best wishes, James
Woohoo! First! 😂
Yes you are!
Certainly a change from Edinburgh
You've captured the wind blowing through the palm trees
Hi Alison,
You really couldn’t find a bigger contrast from Edinburgh to Barbados.
Sadly, heading back now to the cold.
Best wishes, James
You’re Scottish?!! 😮
On the outside 😊
