- We had the pleasure of filming a side project with Pure Heart in March of this year. It was a fun time, but especially special because of the beautiful back drop! The Four Seasons in Ko Olina allowed us to shoot on premises prior to their official opening and it was great! More to come from this band and this location over the next couple of weeks.

I first saw Pure Heart perform on the auditorium stage of the Architecture Building at the University of Hawai'i in the mid-90s, before they recorded an album and made it big on the music scene in Hawaʻi. I was teaching English to a group of Japanese students, and I heard there was a free concert on campus, so I took my students there. (I think it was only Jon & Jake at that time.) We were all very impressed by their sound and especially Jakeʻs ʻukulele playing. I remember they asked if the audience had any requests for Hawaiian music, and since I had been teaching my class the simple hula to the touristy "Hukilau Song," I asked if they could play that while my students danced, but Jake admitted he didnʻt really know it. I think Jon tried to sing and play it (Jake doesn't sing), but he didn't really really know the lyrics. After the concert, my students took pictures with them (I did, too, but I don't know what has happened to those precious photos before the age of digital photography) and I went on the stage to talk to their manager, Jake's father. I've had an interest in Hawaiian music since the 1970's, especially live performances, and I asked Mr. Shimabukuro if Pure Heart was playing anywhere we could go see them, but he said, no, they were just playing at parties and private events at that time. I think they just did the concert at UH because they were students there. Well, a lot great things happened for Pure Heart after that and much success and good things for Jon, Jake, and Lopaka since then. I have recorded them live since they went solo or into other groups, but it is always exciting and nostalgic to see the original Pure Heart perform together again. Can't wait to see what else is coming up!
