There was no car accident, he just got attacked by a wompa
EXACTLY!
True!
Like a Bantha! Yes?
@@ReckArdo88 No a Bantha is a big hairy brown elephant creature. A Wampa is a big hairy white bigfoot type of creature
@@StarWarsUpdate i know the difference
Him grabbing his face like that was such a Mark thing to do😂😂😂
Indeed 😆👍
😂😂😂 undeniably Mark Hamill ❤
It was him showing us how good the plastic surgery was.
For real, when he did that I really saw a grown man politely complaining about the sequels 😂
Auch a Joker thing to do...
So I looked it up he downplayed a little bit. He broke his nose and fractured his cheek bone. It was a one car accident meaning he crashed by himself and beyond the broken nose and cheek bone he was fine.
He definitely downplayed it here :) In my opinion it doesn't look like his nose has been reset,, it looks completely different!
That's a new nose for sure
@@jaigarcia2507 no it's not, look at him today you can see his nose is crooked and his right cheekbone has changed slightly. Corroborating the injuries he sustained. Cameras sucked back then and stage makeup really helped obfuscate physical flaws.
And thanks to the accident he was able to get out of his contract on the show 'Eight is Enough' he was originally cast as the oldest son David - eventually played by Grant Goodeve.
So... The media exaggerated it and he downplayed it? 😂 The truth is always somewhere I the middle lol
His nose was completely flattened. They had to rebuild it. Also broke his cheekbone
This seems to be the (more factual) story
He is honest but had to be traumatic for him. Young actor your nose changes your whole face looks different.@StarWarsUpdate
Back in the day when air bags didn’t exist and seat belt were optional.
@@daleravicHe still looked like himself.
@@TheRealCaptainFreedom Not really. He never looked the same.
Years later he would say immediately after the accident he thought his career was over his face was that messed up.
he did say that yes
I’m surprised nobody notice it when the movie came out.
I think they did notice!
Thats why its was pointed out wasnt ir?
The actor who played Luke Skywalker literally says "the movie came out and nobody noticed" in the video that you posted..........
@@Dexide10 "nobody noticed" isn't actually true... He is bending the truth. Everyone noticed. Believe me.
@@StarWarsUpdate
Source: Trust me bro
Mark Hamill is not being forthcoming here. He had reconstruction on his face, dental work, etc. You can tell he doesn’t look the same, and you can tell he crushed part of his face because ever since the first movie he has sort of a lazy eye on one side of his face.
Everybody noticed at the time, which is why Lucas (no matter what they say now) created the wompa scene to distract from Mark’s clearly altered appearance. It seems they thought that if they introduced Mark in the movie with serious facial bruises and cuts, it would ease the shock at seeing his face after.
I think you are spot on
Yes that’s how I remember it too.
Exactly
Weird that Lucasfilm pretend that the Wampa attack on Hoth wasn’t written into the film to explain Hamill looking different than he did in A New Hope.
lol no he doesn’t have a lazy eye and his face didn’t seem any different. But please go on and tell him what he went through since your an expert about other people’s lives 🤦🏻♂️ seriously, get laid or something, jesus
As a kid I never really noticed a change in his face, but I’ve always thought, even as a kid, that he looked more handsome in episodes 5 and 6 than in 4. He looks a bit baby-faced in A New Hope while he looks more matured in TESB and ROTJ. At least that’s what I’ve always thought, idk if others agree though.
That's a fair comment, thanks
I agree. I thought he looked older in 5.
No dude smh
R
I mean... imagine looking older when you get older. :P
I had to reconstruct my face with plastic surgery
His face: ⤵️⤴️⤵️⤴️⤵️⤴️
😆😆😆😆
💀.
I thought a Wompa injured his face?...
Not a 🚗 car...
The car is a lie, it was The Wampa!
😂.
Wampa did injure Luke’s face. Mark was in a car accident…
How is he so charming? Even this little snippet I enjoy just hearing him talk. I know he's a fantastic story teller too. I heard him at Star Wars Celebration 5 when he talked about filming the first movie. I heard it on XM radio so I got to hear it multiple times and it was great every time.
🙂
Yes he was in a car accident between A New Hope and the Empire Strikes Back, that's why the wompa attacks Luke Skywalker on Hoth at the beginning of the Empire Strikes Back.
Correct
No it’s not, they already came up with the wampa idea before the car crash (there was originally going to be a whole subplot for the wampas that got cut, though the deleted scenes of it exist). It was not written to explain Mark Hamill’s face, that’s just urban legend.
@@Lady-Y He was involved in car crash before the release of Star Wars in 1977. So, way before there was even a plan for Empire.
Mark Hamill has always been one of my lifelong heroes.✊🏽
🙂
When I saw Mark Hamill in the Empire Strikes Back when it was originally released many years ago, I noticed immediately that he did not look the same as he had in Star Wars. I attributed it to the fact that a couple of years or so had passed , and he probably had been living a very fast life due to the fame he had acquired. That beautiful wholesome look he had in Star Wars was gone.
it was confusing to me as a child, like he was him but he wasn't him.
Nobody hardens within 3 years though especially when you're still in your 20s 😆
i distinctly remember him being quoted as saying his nose was basically wiped off his face. Thought it was in People magazine.
👃 yes, he seems to have played it down here to the UK media, not realising in 40+ years we'll be analysing it all on something called The Internet 😆
I remember reading a quote saying something to the effect of "my face was hamburger."
Anyone ever notice that he legit has the jokers smile
He does 😃👍
Well he is the best joker voice actor
Don't be silly here, chad
Darth Joker 😅
If this happened in 2015 ppl would be saying he died in the crash and Disney cloned him😂😂😂
People are still saying that in the comments 😆
With what he initially said about TLJ versus how he's been talking lately, I wouldn't put it past Mickey Mouse to have assassinated him and cloned him.
Good point!
"Paul is dead" conspiracy predates Mark's by a decade fyi
Yeah maybe check out the Beatles conspiracy about Paul McCartney beying dead. 😂
People have always came up with crap like that. Ever heard about mythology and religion? Someone believing they replaced a person seems way more plausible then believing in Jesus to be honest. 😅
Back in the 80's in Fallbrook, CA, my mother was in a women's group with his sister. His sister said that Mark has a habit where he looks at you when he talks to you. He was driving while talking to his passenger when the accident occurred. She didn't elaborate on the details of the accident. She also said he was fantastic at doing impersonations, and that her children just loved him for being so fun and entertaining.
Great insider info, thanks
But I thought he was driving alone when the accident occurred. I've never heard of a passenger being there.
Wild story, wilder if it were true, Mark was alone during the accident, you can lie somewhere else
Interviewer: reports you got into a car accident...
Mark Hamil: do you wanna know How i got this scars?

I wanted to make my father laugh...
When I first watched the Empire Strikes Back as a kid, as soon as he unveiled his mask when atop of the Tauntaun in Hoth, I instantly thought it was another actor entirely. And that section of the movie was before the Wampa attack.
yes!
I remember he looked very different
So did my mum when I saw it but as I was 8 I didn't listen to her and now. I see she was right.
Only reason i knew it was the same actor was because i already knew it was him before i saw the movie
I thought it was a different actor, too
When Mark looks down when dude says “it wasn’t really too bad..” That body language indicates that he has something he could add
yes I don't think he's being completely honest here. He looks like he's thinking "if you only knew the truth...."
@@StarWarsUpdate I agree, he may have thought it could negatively impact his career.
His left eye lid is absolutely different.

Almost like he aged...lol I'm pretty sure that's what it was. He didn't look massively different between hope and jedi.
He definitely looked different, that wasn't just 2 years of ageing lol
The nose looks a lot different.
My money is on alcohol consumption. Between hope and Jedi, you could also see it on Carrie Fisher @@StarWarsUpdate
As a kid i always thought it was a complete different actor
Look at any celebrity who’s undergone plastic surgery. As they age, the effects of it become more and more apparent. It ruins their appearance.
Didn't some documentary show X-rays? His whole face was smashed in.
I believe so
Yes, he was badly injured. I think he just didn't want to talk about it anymore.

Same! He was a real babe before the accident.
How unbelievably shallow of you.
@@BLSFL_HAZE More youtube comment trolls, I deal with your type every day, you're not special
@@StarWarsUpdate hey mate he has a point though. Commenting on someone's looks is very shallow. You should be dealing with the ones who made that insult to begin with.
One side of my face is paralyzed due a disability. Something I have no control over. Do you have any idea how painful it is being told I'm ugly because of my disability. The comments be those women should be deleted. Imagine if a man said that about a woman. Come on mate show some equality . Don't go after the person defending Mark go after the ones attacking his looks.
Unless you think it's to insult people on how they look. Do you think that's ok? I hope you're not that shallow too.
Are you going to call me a troll because I was offended by those shallow remarks?
Do the right thing and delete both of those insulting comments. Sick of women getting away with this.
That’s crazy how he scrunched up his cheeks, making them fall that suddenly he was the spitting image of present Mark but with fabulous hair.
lol 😆
Hamill didn't have much of a career after Star Wars. I think the change in his appearance is the primary reason for that.
Very possible - and he went on to do a lot of voice work (some consider him more famous for his voice work, depending on what era you're from).
Exactly
His career would have been much bigger without that accident
I think everyone noticed he looked significantly different. He looked like himself but that something seemed off or changed. I just assumed he had gotten older was all and the face changes over the years as you age.
you're right
They just added the Wompa scene so it could explain why Luke looks different in Empire
yes 🙂
I remember when he had the accident. He is definitely downplaying it here. And yes, we DID notice he looked different!
Yes we all noticed - I think he's downplaying it because it was affecting his ability to get roles beyond Star Wars movies. That's what I read anyway (could be b.s.)
How would you look after killing millions on a space station
😆👍
Pretty good 😂😊
He was likely driving so fast so he could escape the Batmobile.
😆 great comment
He’s lying here.
In a interview from back in the day:
“The accident made hamburger out of my face. It took a lot of special effects at the hospital to put it back together again. Part of one ear was used to rebuild my nose." - Dynamite Magazine, 1978
Thanks for the info!!
Dynomite!
Ha!
Takes me back
made a hamburger out of his face sounds like something a coke head would say. I can't believe none of you have heard the story he was snorting coke off the steering wheel when it happened. Every SW fan I knew back in the 80's had heard that story. Coke, he got from Carrie. He was so nice he didn't want to blame her.
@Me4-gc8qs
What do you mean, nice? By your own claim it would be his in front of him and nothing to do with her.
If you were to get a bottle of wine from a friend and came home and had too much and broke your china from aint Matilda would you go back and blame the person you got it from?
I don't believe you're bright enough to be taken seriously as to the story in first place. You kind of on the dupe side
@Me4-gc8qs
It did not make "hamburger" of his face inasmuch as just a nose repair and damage to his eye area was affected. Are you on something maybe?
He looked way better before
I liked him both ways, but there's a difference for sure.
But now he looks a lot like Anakin. If you put their faces side by side, it actually looks like they're for real father and son, it's crazy and makes it all so much more alive when seeing that.
Maybe George Lucas made him get plastic surgery so that he would look like Hayden Christensen.. who wasn't born in 1977. Oh wait.
It's called "casting"
But I thought before he looked like that, cause that pointy nose beautiful lly resembled Hayden
its funny how anakin is played by someone younger, while his son, luke is played by someone older
No.
When I was younger, I was mad because I thought they have changed the main actor. Even his hair was darker.
I know what you mean
Corvettes are hard to control.
😆 indeed
If anything it made “pretty boy” Mark Hamill way cooler than before because now he was a survivor. It only added to his credibility.
I guess so, yes!
He looks completely different holy shit
Yes! 👃💥🚗
Yeah I can't believe some people don't see it. I always said it is quite literally a different human being but they all just call me Old Ben Kenobi the quack.
It seems you guys define the word "completely" the same way I define the word "slightly".
@@BLSFL_HAZE that, or we may just pick up on more distinctive differences because it's what we've been used to our entire lives. For instance, every African American I've ever met says all Caucasians look the same. But me being a Caucasian, I see something else entirely. Maybe you're not as perceptive as you think you are homie.
@grandparicksfirstassistant3386 I guess you may be right. If I'm being perfectly honest, the only reason I found out about his accident was that someone told me about it when I was like 16 or so, back in '01. I'd been watching all the movies for as long as I could remember, and I'd never noticed any significant difference at all. I mean, maybe he looked a BIT different to me, but I'd always chalked that up to the fact that he was slightly older. I absolutely don't think he looks like two different people, coz his voice and mannerisms remain identical.
Either way, I really don't think it matters at all.
Different but still handsome ✨
🙂
Much more ugly
His whole face is different. Especially his nose.
Yes, some people thought he had been recast
I did, a kid of 8. He sounded like Luke but look very different

that is actually a good comparison!
Much experience in life to trust my eyes. I know for a fact that there was definitely something different about Hamill's face in the first sequel, and not just the nose🤔
I agree
I mean canonically it makes sense. He’s still in his developmental years going through a war (stress changes appearance through wrinkles) and has been attacked by various monsters between the films
👃
Anyone wanna talk about how his hair color changed between a new hope and return of the Jedi too? 🤪
The car accident changed his hair color 😐
he was no longer on a desert:)
He looks completely different after the first film. It's crazy.
It kinda killed his leading man potential outside of Star Wars movies. He had enough money to get it restored to what it was. I'm surprised he didn't. His nose was reincarnated on Tom Cruise's face though.
😮👃
he even smiles like The Joker. best Joker ever!

All my life I’ve earnestly believed he’d been in a horrible motorcycle accident and had reconstructive surgery. I still remember the kid on the playground telling me that around 1982. I think I’ve always, subconsciously, thought I could see a difference.
Interesting comment! Thank you so much

I heard that
I remember thinking he looked really different!

Taken from the BBC TV childrens show called Ask Aspel.
I recorded this with my tape recorder in front of the TV speaker.

@@StarWarsUpdateA good video on RUclips.
BBCs THE RISK BUSINESS, THE MOVIE.
Look at the making of STAR WARS and EMPIRE from early 1980.
I love how he acts the exact same then as he does now.
I attended a small dinner party at a friend’s apartment. It so happened that Mark Hamill, his wife and infant son were staying in a furnished apartment in the same complex. This was in Chattanooga while Mark was filming “The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia”, so probably 1980 iirc. We saw them from the balcony as they walked by and we couldn’t resist making our fan presence known. He turned around as we filled his ear on how much we loved him in the Star Wars films. He seemed like a down to earth, friendly, smiling guy with no hint of an inflated ego. We invited them to our little soirée but he politely declined. I’ve wondered on occasion if he might have popped in had he been alone. And that’s my one and only Mark Hamill story. Cheers
Wow thanks for sharing that
I genuinely never knew why everyone thought he looked insanely different. I spoke to someone once who said they thought he had been recast when they first saw it 😂 I always just thought he looked a few years older
It's definitely not a case of looking a few years older - look at the tv show interviews he did in 1977 to promote Star Wars (a matter of months after filming), he's the same age, and his face looks so different. Also look at his face in the Star Wars Holiday Special lol
@@StarWarsUpdate yeah - he looks practically the same.
ok well I guess millions of people for 50 years who have used their eyes to see that he obviously looks different must have been wrong all this time, because in reality he looks the same.... 😐 ok lol
@@StarWarsUpdate haha calm down - all I said was to me he looked the same - only a little older - he has that teenage look in Star Wars and by Empire he looks more adult like. Maybe that’s because of the surgery but he still looks like the same guy! I thought that as a 7 year old when I first saw it and I still think that as an adult. I’m not trying to dispute anyone’s claim here.
I didn't know he had surgery when I was a kid, and I did absolutely question it, everybody did, - it was an uncanny valley situation - it seemed like him, but it wasn't quite him. "Why does Luke Skywalker look so different?" ... "Oh it was the Wampa attack" ... "huh? but he looks different before the Wampa attack..." 😆
They used to say his nose tip was sheered off by his Corvette's shattered windshield.
😮👃🚗
It was a BMW. You're confusing the fact that he started in the movie " Corvette Summer"
I remember this interview. From memory, Mark Hamil said something about how handy a light sabre would be in real life, so he could light people’s cigarettes or something. (I was like 8 or something)
I would i have written in some off screen dual with boba fett or someone or some passing dialogue like "theres that feind boba fett! Last time we met he headbutted me with his helmut on!!"
😆
Yeah i never even thought of that before but that probably would have been a better way to do it actually
They could explain a little bit about it in the opening text and then also have them talk about it and explain it in the movie too
Because it was weird how they showed his face different BEFORE the ice beast even attacks him
Then, to justify a change on his face, GL created the wampa monster.
True!
His face looks way different after the accident. Not just his nose and cheek. Also his chin and lips. Basically his whole face changed.
Side note:
I would love for somebody to do a deep fake on The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Replacing his face to what it looked like before the accident.
WOW I would love to see that too

Thanks for your video on this topic. I saw the Star Wars trilogy for the first time in 1985. As a 80s kid I was obsessed with Star Wars.
So anyway, even at a young age I thought Luke was played by two different actors.
Poor Mark Hamill... Think about this, some people choose to change the way they look, but he got messed up and there was no going back. Imagine waking up in the hospital after an accident and you have a totally different face. No wonder he got into voice acting. Ironic how Mark's real life paralleled the character of the Joker in the 1989 Batman film. There's that scene after Joker goes to the surgeon, where he looks in the mirror and starts laughing at the results.
If I ever met Mark Hamill I'd love to ask him about that, but it would be rude so I would not.
@@LSD-420 I absolutely love the parallel / comparison you've made with 1989 Joker (my most favourite Batman movie)
It sure did. There's no way only his nose was affected.
The same I would like since his face went horrible after the car accident and the surgeries
Glad your still doing ok 👌 your an iconic person
I appreciate that
I called this the “ Montgomery, Clift” affect… Montgomery was doing a movie with Elizabeth Taylor, called Raintree County… In the middle of production he was at her house one night and fell asleep at the wheel on the way home, and… He had also been drinking… But his face was just shattered… so he had to get reconstructive surgery and he was a Ferry troubled man already, but he joked that people would go to see “Raintree County” which is a horrible movie, by the way… Just to see his face before the accident… And after…
I love Mark butt h downplaying this a lot… His face is noticeably different. It’s not just his nose. It’s his mouth and chin… He tore ligaments in his face He’s still a beautiful man but first Star Wars movie his looks were significantly different.
👍
@@StarWarsUpdate I added some more information lol thank you for the thumbs up

It was simply him getting older.
lol no it's not simply him getting older. It was in 1977 his face looked different, just as Star Wars hit theatres, he had not aged at all in 1977, it was the same year. He had surgery on his face after a car accident.
You guys he looked different because he was barely a legal adult in the first movie. And by the second and third movies he had grown into his adult face.
He looked different in 1977, and attended the premier of Star Wars with his different look. It's hardly just aging alone.
He was 25 at the time. Not a kid.
Do you mean that adult face is ugly face? Tom Cruise has the same face older but it is almost the same.
He’s under exaggerating it. He got into a car accident and his face pealed off as he skidded on the road. They used a staple gun and stretched his face back onto his head
I think it went something like this yes
He def looked different in the second movie.

in SW he actually looks a bit like Christopher Reeve. The bridge of his nose was high and angular. Oh well stuff happens
I noticed his children (now grown adults) seem to have his new adjusted nose, not his Christopher Reeve original nose 👃 🤔
What changed was his innocence and the stress of suddenly being in the public eye as well as just the time that went by,
