I organize, by fiber, brand, color, and weight. I use to store my yarn, in under bed bedding storage bags. Only, I went a little overboard, and binge purchased a ridiculous amount of yarn. Now I need totes. I am not pleased in the way it makes the yarn smell. Most of my yarn is acrylic, and being plastic based in a plastic container, it begins to smell like gasoline. At least, it does to me. It could also be the dyes, used, that smell, after being closed up in plastic containers. I like the bedding storage bags, because they breathe. Even though, the top, is plastic and see through ( important, enables me to see what is inside). I am not purchasing anymore yarn, for a long while… I am so glad you mentioned, allowing the yarn to breathe. After sorting through, some yarn today, I realized I need to find an alternative method to store my yarn. I also use the cubes, for wips. Walmart’s Mainstay yarn is great for stuffing animals, and amigurumi. Thanks, this was fun! 🕊💕🕯😇🙏🏻💚

I store mine the same way. By project or by type and color. I have redone my craft room a few times but this is what makes sense to me. My stripe cotton, I made small baskets which holds my charges, turned out super cute.

I bought some nylon boxes that snap together from Amazon and I organize by both color and size. Then I made a spread sheet denoting yarn, number of skeins; the amount in one skein and the total yardage of the yarn. Now when I see a project I’m interested in doing I can look at my spreadsheet and know which yarn has enough yardage to make that project. I love just looking at the yarn. Sometimes I don’t want to use it because it’s so pretty to look at - I end buying yarn specifically for that project.

I have a suggestion for using the cotton yarns. I have made a few purses/bags using 3 or 4 strands together. Mixing solids and variegated colours. Putting pastels together make a pretty spring or summer purse. Also, now i am making wind spinners for the 4th of July. All red, white, and blue, but a mixture of the colour combinations. They work up quickly and a great use of the cotton yarns. Your storage idea is such an inspiration. Thank you.

You are well organized. I organize my yarn by fiber and then weight. I have one box with just left overs. I wish I had space to display my yarn like yours. On the other hand, I don't have a lot of yarn. My stash id rather on the small side.

I organize my yarn by size and I keep cotton yarns and scrubby or elasticy separate on their own shelf. I do not organize by color because then I can't tell at a glance if I have enough of a 4 weight versus a DK for a project. Separated by weight, I do not have to dig around to know if I have what I need. I have project bags for all my WIPs. I try not have more than four at a time. It used to be two but if I get special requests, the WIPs get put to the side lol. I have a box for leftovers that I keep under my craft table. When it gets full, time for a scrap project. I made a scrappy blanket last year and I use it all the time. Had intended to give it away but was too good and comfy in my crochet chair. My husband bought me a cool cabinet with a sliding barn door to keep my yarn in. It does not hold all my yarn, but the majority fits and I can see yarns easily.

Thanks for the tour! I organize my yarn by fiber, so it's easier to peruse when I have a specific project in mind. I am so glad to hear that you have hibernating projects that you plan to abandon! I am not the only one. 😂 I have been cleaning out those bbn projects, and have even completely frogged and tinked a few. But I am excited about the new projects I have started with said fibers! 🎉

I have all of mine in either tight sealed plastic totes at home, which is by type of yarn. Like Truboo is all together, my Cotton Yarn is all together, then Heartland yarns are together. Then in the truck, I am an OTR Truck Driver, I have it all in Duffle bags, or a few tote bags. I have a bunch of the Bernat Velvet yarns that I have in a big laundry bag. But, I hadn't thought about the mold and mildew being a problem with it being sealed tight. I may have to rethink that now. My yarn stash is almost too big, cause I can't stop buying more. 😂 I love your studio though, and I have been thinking about doing something similar(ish). I don't have room for another shed so I have thought about getting a small Storage Unit to store it all in.

For the first time since moving 2 years ago, I've finally got enough yarn to do several projects. Thank You for sharing!!

🙈 I just bought 6 extra large plastic storage bags for my extra yarn that doesn’t fit in the cabinets I have… I never heard about them getting moldy! I’m hoping, since they’re in the house in an upstairs bedroom where there’s no humidity, that they should be fine…
Where did you get your cube wall unit? I really want something like that.
