The film is a story of Zen Buddhism Chuang Tzu was a philosopher in ancient China, who, one night went to sleep and dreamed that he was a butterfly. He dreamt that he was flying around from flower to flower and while he was dreaming he felt free, blown about by the breeze hither and thither. He was quite sure that he was a butterfly. But when he awoke he realised that he had just been dreaming, and that he was really Chuang Tzu dreaming he was a butterfly. But then Chuang Tzu asked himself the following question: "was I Chuang Tzu dreaming I was a butterfly or am I now really a butterfly dreaming that I am Chuang Tzu?"
Ljp's maternal grand father was from Tamilnadu, came to Kerala married and settled here. His name was James. A movie buff, took ljp to a lot of tamil and malayalam movies.Ljp's father was a theater artist along with Thilakan. Thilakan's name is shown on the board in the last frame.
This film was also a journey for me. I once read that Aristotle said, "We human beings are essentially the same, the only changes are our accidents; for example: the color of our skin, the shape of our nose, our gender, and so on. This film contains such a message that we are all the same; therefore, I felt this film was a piece of true art. Each scene was full of symbols and looked like a painting. I will try to explain my personal viewing experience and understanding The static shots in the film: life is a drama: it is difficult to distinguish between the real and the surreal. I am both an observer and an actor. BGM: Each piece of background music had a beautiful meaning associated with that particular scene. Synopsis: You can look at it however you want: in the beginning it looked like a man having a dream, or a little ghost story, or a psychological thriller. Since LJP is a genius, I'd rather try to find a deeper explanation. Opening scene: people sleeping in a hotel, a man trying to wake up + Bgm of devotional music at Veilankanny: felt to me: birth of an individual: The bus: life is a journey the bus stop in the middle of a rice field: our life or some kind of enlightenment experience in our life the tree: tree of Buddha, tree of enlightenment Mammootyy walks in the village/ all his routines...far fetched...- he knows the place, he knows the streets, he is a person from this place.... Conflict of identities: we all face the conflict of our own identities and roles grandmother: personification of the goddess of justice: for her we are all her children, we are all equal before justice. therefore she takes somasundaram in mammootty malay and tamil: ordinary people: live according to the norms and culture of society. have many prejudices against each other. in time, even they realize that with understanding for each other, we can coexist and live peacefully. The scene played on the bus was from a mammootty movie: "my son is standing in front of me," which means I am just like you.... me, my son, my grandson... we're all the same... life goes on, only the shapes and forms change.... There is also some social criticism. The pain of women, their suffering due to gender roles, etc. the scene in the bar is lit in three colors, red, white and green. this reminded me of the color of the national flag: and the dialect from the film sounds when bgm says: since we have a conflict of principle, get out of my house.... this happens in many countries because of color caste and belief, the majority asks the minority to leave our country even though they have no right to do so, because the earth actually belongs to all its inhabitants. the following scene, in which mammootty is forced to leave the house he now lives in, shows us again how we all get our identities and roles and how they are perceived by others.... for somasundaram, it is his house, but since he does not look like somasundaram, people want to evict him.... And again he says, "Me and somasundaram, we are not different, we are the same.... it also has a political, social element, how people are evicted from their homes because they don't conform to social norms.... the end: life goes on like the bus...we are the same.... let's not try to hate each other, let's try to spread love

If you didn't talk about the shadow in this video ,I wouldn't have known, Even after watching this movie twice I didn't even notice it . thank you paaji ...😊
@@NonaPrince Its not mammootys shadow. Its of someone looking from inside. You can clearly see his shadow behind his back on the floor. Also you can see his shadow behind his back when he was sitting in the scene just before this scene.
i just finished watching this and HOLY CRAP it was AMAZING. i gotta watch it again because i am sure that i missed some things. i LOVED how the heavy themes were addressed by the tv show or radio in the background. so much to unpack here. um, oh, i get your sleeping joke there; funny dude.
Let me tell you something first... I had a dream, It was a song, I heard the most beautiful music and lyrics in it... And suddenly I wakes up and I remember the song and lyrics... Again I slept, In the morning I forgot everything... Can you believe it... But trust me... This is my review for this film
In the opening scene Mammooty talks with hotel manager on what is thirukural. Writen on wall. That says he told him sleeping is death and waking up is rebirth. Like that MAMMOOTY SLEEPS IN THE BUS AS JAMES AND WAKEUP AS SUNDARM ALSO IN CLIMAX MAMOOTY SLEEPS AS SUNDARM AND THEN WAKEUP AS JAMES.
My theories were: 1. Mammotty's character is dreaming the whole thing. 2. Village sequence was a play But supernatural angle fits the best now that you've mentioned it...I totally missed out on that.
Yes the 3 last blurred face of the person whom he saw in his field, farm just after mammoka wake up. Also the dust particles of sunlight disappeared after few seconds in in the ending.
In the climax scene sarathi theaters.. We can understand it is a play that done by james and his group in that village.. After mammootty wake up in climax as james how james know the way back to bus? That means it is sundaram
Definitely one of the best films of LJP . Each frame was a brilliant painting in a way . The addition of old Tamil cinema as bgm made it have a duality of watching both a play and a movie at the same time. He brilliantly brings in chaos very subtly even in static shots . That chaos in order was quite special indeed . And as always each level of audience will be able to get a unique experience and interpretation from the movie and he always facilitates for it to co exist in his filmmaking . This only adds to the hype for malaikottai vaaliban now ! In an otherwise industry where you can sort of classify categorise and group movies, LJP always feels quite unique and refreshing. And his sincerity towards the craft is exquisitely fascinating ! Always something new to learn and experience !
For me the dream theory works. You can hear those bus window vibrating noise when Sundaram looks in the mirror at the barbershop. Director has included a bus window vibrating shot intentionally before the whole village sequence. This means James is still inside the bus dreaming and surrounding noise came into his dream for a moment. Also the guy who left at night with his wife is still sitting behind Mammootty's seat in the climax shot.
Did you notice the crows and the crows flying away after he eating the meal? It's hinting at the Hindu ritual post death which leaves the soul free after death or something. Don't know the exact meaning though. But yeah it is after he eats the rice and the crow flys away, that the original character comes back. But ofcourse the original character remembers what all happened. And that's exactly why he's leading the flock back to bus.
Your ratings are perfect Man! Except one given for AMEN . That time it was like a dream, goosebumps every scene. Again agree with you- ee ma yuow his best till.

Actually in Hindu Ritual they say that Crow has special ability that it can keep Two souls inside its body at a time. After demise of any Relative they keep food for crow so that the soul would enter into that crow's body therefore there's two souls inside its body now. The soul would eat the food from Crow's body. I feel LJP should commercialize his films and deliver the audience something to bite in the first few scenes itself than giving a slow draggy narrated film where the audience can get bored and lag otherwise I personally do like LJP film ideas like in nanpakal nerathu mayakkam but the problem is he is not getting audience hooked in the first place which makes sort of detached to the film due it being so slow paced.
@@shelly_lee I am saying this because he has great ideas but if execution is done in way where a mass audience can connect to the film by making LJP's sensibility matches with a wider audience sensibility, more people will come to theatre and watch the film and box office wise also it will earn more. For example look at kantara, it gave theatrical experience and is also giving importance to art. That's how a film should be , needs to be balanced. Times have changed, malayalam directors also needs to understand a wider audience taste.

The poem has been used as a preamble of kannada movie LUCIA whee reality and dream blur. I think LJP film alludes more to this movie.
The Blur baniyan tree shots, one in the beginning and one at the end, marks the start and stop of the entire anomaly. May be the entire village doesn't exists.. (i mean why would they blur those 2 shots, as if they are entering and exiting an illustration
For me this movie is no way LJPs best but definitely a new experience and its never mammottys best performance as was hyped during it's release. People were comparing the performance with that of Thaniyavarthanam which I felt a joke. It is no way near to it.
Yeah I am waiting for the live many theories are poping out . some one says it is all drama since the bus and all looks like old buses of troups. But on the other hand why the dog Followed mammuty ? Why everyone did sleep afternoon at same time including animals .

He is the most popular indie filmmaker I'm India. I don't think he needs or wants to do and that's what makes him stand out
Brilliantly reviewed ❤

This is the famous Keertan of Saint Kanakadasa in Kannada.
The poem has been used as a preamble of kannada movie LUCIA whee reality and dream blur.
I think LJP film alludes more to this movie.
This movie is a journey.
But when James wakes up in the bus he tells to stop the bus in malayalam, not in Tamil. It made me confuse.
Interesting
The Blur baniyan tree shots, one in the beginning and one at the end, marks the start and stop of the entire anomaly. May be the entire village doesn't exists.. (i mean why would they blur those 2 shots, as if they are entering and exiting an illustration
@nona prince , did you see Churali?
yes
Film asks you , who are you? Where you came from? Where you going?? What is your identity?? The very question buddha asked himself!!!!
So is it the best film of LJP, in your opinion?
Bhai its not naanpakal..,its Nanpakal.
71 year legend 🙏
LJP is one of Cinema's original voice..
Nokio in Malayalam means ‘did you look?’
One word Lijo 🌷
For me this movie is no way LJPs best but definitely a new experience and its never mammottys best performance as was hyped during it's release. People were comparing the performance with that of Thaniyavarthanam which I felt a joke. It is no way near to it.
It's not nanupakkal -- it's nanpakal
I loved the movie. Masterpiece.
Mammooty can act in tamil as
same as he can act in malayalam..
pls review movie- IRATTA (malayalam Movie)

How did Sundaram die though ?
The film says that one day Sundaram left for Oddanchatram Market and never returned.
May be james was involved in this case somehow!
I think he murdered by some issues in village , movie says the same
Filmkopath channel gives a political connotation of this movie
It's just a sleeping pills.if u have struggled with sleeping u definitely watch this 🤣🤣
You have been watching South Indian movies for quite sometime. Why dont you make an effort to pronounce at least the title properly.
🤚🏻
Yeah I am waiting for the live many theories are poping out . some one says it is all drama since the bus and all looks like old buses of troups. But on the other hand why the dog Followed mammuty ? Why everyone did sleep afternoon at same time including animals .
