That's a great question. I have not had a trap moved so far that I couldn't snag it or I lost it. Many times I tie it off to a root or a tree stump. The thing is, when I pull the rope up I really have no idea how far the trap moved - if any - from the place I put it. It might have moved 10 or 20 feet either by river current or by a fish but I have no way of knowing. I do try and place them in areas with little current. Also a good reason to use a round trap rather than a square one.
And if you dont catch any catfish you can drink the beer off of your bait, you can go to the grave yard and find reef stands in the garbage cans the wire they are made of is good for making stuff like crawfish drages etc. It might be a little heavy for making your drag hook but might be good for making the hoops for making that kind of fish trap. Good video though
Yes - I am making a batch right now. It will take about two weeks to finish. I use the same bait for hunting wild hogs, so subscribe and watch for my "Trapping Wild Hogs" video series which will start in about two weeks. Thank you for watching.
Not sure what happened but the url for dixiegardennets isn't working. Found the same link using google none of them worked. Looks like they took down their website.
I just bought one today. I am going to give it a go with the feed wheat and corn mixture. does it matter on what kind of wheat that is added with the corn? (white or red ) thank you for all of your videos and information. I really appriciate it.
Thanks for the videos. I like to trap as much of my food as I can trap. I also raise a lot of my own food. I am trying to find areas to trap wild hogs now. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching and good luck with the hogs. If it's legal in your state, you should try snaring them. Newt Sterling has a great video on snaring hogs. Well worth the money.
Hay Beaver trapper awesome video ! Have you ever considered learning how to make nets ? I learned a year or two and learned that it is an awesome prep !
You know brother, that is an awesome idea. I read a story once about the company "Fishnetco.com" down in Louisianan. They make gill nets and were talking about how people that knew how to make nets for them were dying out - it was basically a skill handed down from generation to generation within families. I can see how you could stock up on twine or monofilament and then make any size and depth net you need. That would indeed be a great skill to have. One of my worries about my catfish and turtle nets is repairing them once they get worn. Thank you very much for this comment - you are dead on - this is a skill I need to look into. Thanks for commenting and I hope you have a great 2015!
The more I fish them, the more I think cheese is the best. My local supplier is waiting on a fresh shipment, so hopefully I can pick up a few buckets of cheese later this week. One of my projects this year coming year is to fish a net trap, slat trap and wire basket next to each other and see which works best. What are your thoughts? The slat traps have to be waterlogged to sink and they are heavy. Wire baskets are lighter, but bulk. The nets fold up small.
Hi, very interested in this but your web links are not working. do you know if dixie gardens is still open and if so, what is their updated website link? we also had trouble with meattrapper.com, i had to search for it and found it so i'm pretty sure its not just me.
Hi Danielle, Thanks for commenting. I just checked the meattrapper.com link and it worked for me so I'm not sure what's going on with that. It looks like the Dixie Gardens site is no longer active. I guess he's no longer in business. I have purchased from fishnetco.com/products/fishing-nets/catfish in La before and had a good experience. They charge a lot for shipping - but that's par for the course these days. They have a very good selection of top notch nets and are very friendly over the phone. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have trouble or if I can help. Good luck!
I would lose the grappling hook. Could damage the net and get hung up on under water debris. I set my traps deeper and use a parachute cord tied to the trap with a float for easy location and easy to pull up. Thanks for the video, but seems you're making it harder than it has to be.
Q: how is that designed better (more advantage) than regular fish trap with TWO (2) entrances/openings? People said more openings is better b/c it lets fishes/crabs more easy to get inside to be trapped, and some fish/crabs give up and go away if they take too long to find entrance? I think for a while, believe the best advantage of this design is having LONGER STORAGE area to collect more catches, with 2 throats make the catch harder to exit the trap. Other than that, seems this trap is NOT as efficient than regular trap with 2 openings. PLS ADVISE and give a deep thoughtful insights/analysis of this design vs regular design. Thanks. THINGS LIKE THAT SO LOW TECH should be MADE IN CHINA with THICKER/stronger net (just make sure stronger net wire use), will save consumer tons of $ - expect price under $50 if made in China and most Asian are smart in Math, Science, Engineering, so this is no brainner - too easy to DIY or invent. I design/invent similar since I was a child in poverty countryside - able to put fish/food on the table use insightful brain to design/solve problems:)! BTW, I hate CA with overregulations, so many things are illegal, except stupid socialist Dumbercrats politicians are busy only to make laws help illegal immigrants at the cost of moral, honest, hard working citizens like myself too - legal tax payer citizens are subsiding those illegal, immoral, lazy, stupid, entitled groups! U ask why we try to do some FISHING fun or put some fish on family table requires tons of CA stupid laws, over 189 pages of trap/fish game codes & also need to tax a fish/trap EXAM to get a license to have FREEDOM OF USA & we just want some fishing fun + put foods on table, why make complicated laws against the honest, hard working, legal citizens? Why Landlords are screwed & hated with all rental laws against landlords, why make laws favor the stupid, weak, poor, gay, illegals? Illegal cross board illegal, when they break the laws at 1st so illegals are criminals to begin with! Our CA liberal politicians are TRAITORS to sell out country/State or legal citizens/tax payers out to kiss ass illegals/immorals/weak/stupid/poor ones b/c they're busy make laws help the illegals, the immoral, the weak (tenant or disabled people always use many store for inaccessible=no disabled parking/door, etc)? Anyway, get back to do a deep comparison of both trap design & share. THX:)
Thank you, sir for making this video. Do you know much about commercial fishing? Specifically, asian carp? I make a living in the outdoors and I'm trying to find more ways to help enhance my income, sir. Thanks for your time and thank you for the videos!
Jesse Knox Thanks Jesse, I appreciate the kind words. In my State, I must purchase a commercial fishing license in order to use traps. The license in Alabama is about a hundred bucks a year. I do not sell my fish, I only trap for personal consumption. Financially, I lose money with having to pay for the license - but I just like being able to trap fish. When I catch carp, I usually use them for trapping bait, which saves me from having to buy bait. I did meet and learn from a man who caught catfish for resale and he told me it was a tough way to make a living. One idea that I have been mulling over, but have not had time to follow through on is to use fish to make a line of high quality dog food to sell to rich yuppies. You could cook the fish with rice and sell it in single serving jars and market it as organic, all natural, renewable resource dog food. Lots of rich folks would pay $3.00 a serving to feed their dogs locally produced, organic, all natural dog food. Just an idea and thinking outside the box. Take care and have a good evening.
Hello, sir Thanks for the quick reply! Well, I get excited too quick I got on the river last Friday when it flooded (7' corn underwater) and I just thought man it'd be fun to make a living from this. I love the river and I understand there's a market for Asians now, about $0.15 a lb right now but if you add it up it's not a lot and luckily iowa (my state) is not being choked out by Asians like Illinois is. I like to bow fish and I use the carp for turtle trapping as well. I love that idea with using carp for dog food! I live by a greenie town and there's plenty of rich folks who love their pets way too much, but that is an awesome idea. I noticed your other videos on gardening, my garden failed horrendously this year because of my work and I got lazy lol but I respect you for wanting to survive off the land from what the good Lord has provided us and I can't wait to watch your garden videos I know I'll learn a bunch! Thanks for your time and take care!
Thanks so much Mr.
From now I don’t have to tighten both end with strings and no more waded in waters !
Thank you so much !

where's the URL for website for net, or what website do we purchase from?
A little sugar and yeast to your corn mash and when it sours your ready to distill a little lighter fuel, lol.

You can cut notches in your pvc pipe or stick and wedge it between the two hoop rings instead of zip tying every time.
Ben Boehl Great tip. Thanks for sharing!
The sour mash also makes a great shine.
I have also used minced garlic in that chum mixture works just as good with a with a lot more stink but the standard mixture works great

Great stuff! Thanks.
Is this product still available for purchase
any chance this man still makes and sells these traps?
Can u make a video on your corn bait for catfish. Thanks

Thanks. I need to make some bait. I will check it out. Thanks
Great video......I learned a lot. Thanks

is this under the trap category if you put the pipe on it
I used a bottle with bread to catch a small catfish

Type of wheat doesn't matter. Main thing is to let it sour good!
Thanks for the videos. I like to trap as much of my food as I can trap. I also raise a lot of my own food. I am trying to find areas to trap wild hogs now. Thanks again.

I don't know if snaring hogs is legal here. I am designing a heavy duty trap however. I want to put some meat in the freezer for winter.
Dig a hole 2x4 and 5 ft deep!
Easy N no noise ! I
Something tells me you know a lot in the art of making moonshine.

That is what you call a small hoop, net

Only bad thing about using a bottle is you may have someone else running your nets for you...
