It annoys me that the World Fantasy award removed HP Lovecraft as the prize image because of the backlash. I don't think his racism changes the quality of his writing or his influence on Sci Fi/horror.

We all know Nyarlathotep’s real plan was to take on the anime girl form and fall in love with a Japanese school boy.

I'd love to hear you talk about "The Call of Cthulhu" (Lovecraft's original story) on Kaiju Lit Circle, sometime. I'm curious about your thoughts on it. :)

Those were some nice, simple, common sense words from that book. A very rare sentiment to find anymore.
I have always avoided Lovecraft's work, less because of his racism, then a complete disagreement to his "vast indifferent universe of squid-gods" thesis. He always struck me as overrated & still does.
That said, finding Lovecraft "problematic" because of views he held in his lifetime, views which were to some degree the rule, rather than the exception, is ridiculous.
And the way another Ytuber, Mr. H, explained it, that all of Lovecraft's fiction is fueled, not so much by racism but by a Xenophobia fueled by personal abuse, mental illness & other problems he suffered from his entire life, has actually made his fiction sound intriguing, if in the "glimpse into the mind of a madman" kind of intriguing.
And with Lovecraft's work suddenly becoming more relevant than perhaps ever before, with new movies, video games and other stuff being produced, it highlights the power that a creative mind, even a disturbed one, can have long after he has passed on.
If all there was to H.P. Lovecraft was his prejudices, his work would not have the power & longevity it has had & we should focus on trying to achieve such a similar feat, instead of parasite off of his legacy.
So I will give Lovecraft a try.
But if we do get Godzilla vs. Cthulhu, I'm betting on the fire-breathing dinosaur.

Fate of Cthulhu ... "We hate Lovecraft and Cthulhu but we will use them both to try and make money off them, but if you don't like our politics than don't by this game."

Okay, first I've heard of this. Thanks for the head's up.
I *really* like that section detailing the dangers of "such and such were behind the (historic bad guys)" trope. Ran into that myself as a newb GM back in the day, left me feeling like I'd screwed up. You have to be just as careful not to do the opposite problem though - using "the bad guy is a (historic villain group)" as shorthand for giving them actual beliefs, motivations, etc.

Great video Omni, I'll have to check this Trail of Cthulu out. On a unrelated topic, would you ever be interested in being a guest of the EFAP podcast with MauLer and co? They do film criticism and analysis, both individually and together once a week. I think you guys would hit it off swimmingly.

I don't think the issue is that Fate of Cthulhu was condemning HP Lovecraft and his bigotry since that's kinda obvious but they fucked up by to trying to dictate how people chose to play the game if that is what they did
Also I could be be wrong but I'm pretty sure Hitler was on Times magazine before the world became aware of what he was really doing in Germany

Here's how I see it; yes, I understand that Lovecraft was bigoted, but think about the way his stories work.
If the rise of the Deep Ones is synonymous with the rise of fascism, then it doesn't seem like Lovecraft is _promoting them._ The way that it happens is that Lovecraft depicts all of these things as horrifyingly abnormal and abhorrent to the protagonists - it doesn't seem like a promotion to me. Even in the Shadow over Innsmouth; the protagonist is horrified by what he sees and escapes from Innsmouth, but later realizes that his ancestry comes from there, and he is gradually turning into a Deep One. So he goes back to "reunite" with his extended family.
To me, that showcases that Lovecraft is treating this like its, "Horrible...but _inevitable."_
He's not necessarily promoting that, but what he is saying is that the way that society is going, something like this is _going to happen_ eventually.
Take George Orwell and _1984,_ - Orwell wasn't a fascist nor did he promote fascism; his book was meant to be a warning about where society was going if we kept down that path. And frankly, it's getting to the point of prophesy because things Orwell predicted are coming to pass, one by one. "It's Horrible...but _inevitable."_
Me personally? I believe that the way things are going, within my lifetime the United States will either no longer exist - be destroyed by it's own hubris and misguided sense of direction, crumbling down under the weight of it's debt and civil unrest - or it will be reorganized into a Fascist Dictatorship run by moral busybodies who think they know better.
I see the signs of where society has gone the last decade and I honestly don't see these sentiments going away or getting better. I don't want the US to fall like this, but the way it's been happening I can't help but think that it's _going_ to end that way.
    "It's Horrible...but _inevitable."_
More often than not, we write books based on what we're afraid of. Orwell was afraid of the world becoming like it was in _1984_ and thus wrote the book to warn people about it. I believe Lovecraft was doing the same.

Though I imagine with H. P. Lovecraft, his racist tendencies might be more on selective bias, like Walt Disney was.

Wow, instead of being racist, I think Lovecraft was from the future, where certain ethnic groups were acting like monsters. Because that is what they are acting like. Or maybe Nazi is a better word.
