I am so glad that you have brought that wagon to life, I agree with others that these models are made to be used and to gather the wear and signs of a long and loved life. I completely understand what you are getting at when you speak of the lady who constructed the wagon before boxing it. There is every reason to believe she is still with us, and today you also honoured her I like to think. Thanks for sharing this video. Happy to also subscribe.
Many thanks. You know I didn’t know if the community would like this video. You know people can be very sceptical and cynical, but I am delighted people understood my genuine interest in this piece of history and I was quite nervous opening it at the time) BR MODELTRAINZZ
Toys are meant to be played with. Or if you prefer more adult language, models are meant to be run. What a little jewel - thank you for sharing and congrats on breaking 161 subscribers.
@@PatGilliland Thank you very much Pat for the kind words. Just thinking - tough to follow that episode)) I remember when it arrived in the post, it dawned on me that that this model was way more significant than the £4.00 I paid in the auction. Its surprising what is out there. I brought some Mainline wagons a while back when they arrived I realised they were factory sealed it makes me wonder were have they been all that time like this Hornby wagon.
@@petercole2092 Thanks for sharing Peter. Yeh I would have liked to see those being revealed too. You know what, I didn’t mention what the winning bid was… Let me dig back)
I've just subscribed, my friend - I'm approximately your brother's age. The 'Silver Seal' range were an incredible innovation for the time. My first model with metal tyres was the R 105 'Bird's Eye' closed wagon, in teal/blue; what struck me the most about those wheels was the (almost) frictionless travel of the rolling stock on the rails - you could punt say, a double bogie coach with your hand & watch it travel half way around a standard oval. My Mam gave me some sewing machine oil & a long pin to lubricate those axles. Your newly unboxed NCB wagon is a beauty, & I fondly recall the loo roll cut-off inserts - to protect the coupling hooks in those boxes; of course, back then 90p was a fortune - I'd get 5p/week pocket money - equivalent to eighteen weeks' saving, then. Part of me wishes you hadn't opened the box -the other half, glad that you did. These were the days when Hornby were a quality, yet less expensive product; personally, I think they've spread themselves too thin with all their diversification; I haven't purchased a modern Hornby product for over twenty years, preferring their competition for the aesthetic finishes & reliability; the old Triang-Hornby stock, however, I relish. My son & I take it in turns to look at the various online auction houses for bargains & pieces reminiscent of that bygone era. Slàinte, Aindriu.

I remember those I’ve just checked my old box’s got 10 of those R102’s but only 8 on my layout not sure what happened to the missing 2, they been in service since I was a boy in the 70’s❤
@@835-Act Thanks for sharing. Glad to hear they are durable too. Since I’ve rewatched the episode (as you do) I’m really surprised how great the condition of the box was/is and the model as well of course. A lot of credit has to go to the owner who obviously stored this at room temperature, away from damp and direct sunlight. Happy New Year MODELTRAINZZ
@@robridgway8574 Hi Rob, Yes it’s a dilemma. I was torn on which option to take. And I did give it quite some thought. I think if I had a do over, I would have still opened and ran her as intended and in tribute to the assembly worker that put her in the box way back in 1973 :-) MODELTRAINZZ

Wait for it…
£4.00 + £4.50 P&P
It didn’t attract the bidding value it deserves. Amazing.

Hey, no bother. The seller obviously didn't know what they had there. Four quid - what a bargain ! Mind how ye go, slan agus beannacht 🙂
Just stumbled across your channel. Nice wagon. Liked and Subbed. Cheers, Andy from Shelvington.

Your choice, but for me it has now lost it's provenance. Once opened & run, it's just another wagon, albeit in excellent condition.

If you’re not going to open and use the thing then what’s the point of having it.
