It seems to me that they showed up to get a shoplifter, but maybe missed them. Then loss prevention guy complained about the disabled man tumbling with his cash at the self checkout. They must have assumed he was drunk or a drug addict. If they did tell the cops to remove him, they changed their story real quick, and threw the cops under the bus in that one... Either way, the cops should have known way better than to handle that like that. I think the guy has grounds to sue the store, and the cops. I hope he does.

He understood that he had done nothing wrong and protested the legitimacy of the arrest. These factors argue against the severity of his disability. It seems it was primarily the strangeness of his vocal tone that caused the judge to deem him incompetent to stand trial, robbing him of his right to defend himself in court.
Simply having difficulty managing a self check-out is certainly not a reason to trespass a customer from a store. These services are not always easy to use. yes exactly. i imagine the young man is still closely supported by family members and are probably so proud that he has developed some sense of independence. the fact those police officers treated that young man in such an inhumane way was truly shocking and profoundly sad. i cannot understand how not one of the officers prevented this. The fact that the Target employee thought it was right to call the police and have the guy thrown out is equally disgusting. They were all effectively operating under the same principle, that they can prey on and bully and exclude and abuse someone who is "weak". What a horrible horrible thing.

I loved your comment. It was probably a proud thing for the man in this video to be able to handle this on his own. He got a bit confused. Hell, I get confused in those self-check-out lines myself sometimes! The Officers? They were clearly dealing with a mentally incapacitated human being, but they handled him as if he was a criminal. The cop doing all the talking is an animal. His two co-conspirator cops are also animals because they didn't stop this stupid arrest. They deserve whatever hell they go through, especially Skeen, who was in charge.

I don't think prisons are filled with people like this man. His mental handicap isn't prominent in the prison system. There are a lot of issues that cause people to become mentally disabled due to drug addiction, but they do have a right to claim that they are incompetent to stand trial and many of them freely plead guilty or no contest and get found guilty by a judge when the prosecutor reads the charges of what the person is accused of. In so many of these cases, they should take their case to trial and never forfeit their right to a speedy trial and force the prosecution to prove the crime beyond a reasonable doubt. There is a log jam in the jails because of all these deals being made for shorter prison terms when a good number of them have a good chance of being found not guilty. In this case, the store and the cops were wrong and it is arguable that the cops knew that they were wrong for making this arrest and even removing the man from the store. They could have helped the man put his money into the kiosk and then help him out of the store and told the store that you can't discriminate against a disabled person. It is highly doubtful that it didn't cross the mind of any of those officers on the scene but not one of them stood up for the man. The man goes to jail, not certain if he was put in a cell with other inmates which could have possibly put the man in harms way, because real criminals have criminal minds and don't care about the consequences because they are likely getting a deal that is much less than the time they should be serving in prison and they know that they are already going to prison, and most of them don't press charges against another when someone assaults them in jail out of fear of retribution later.
