  • NOMAD SCULPT - Comic Matcaps
We’ve covered this topic many times before but I don’t think we’ve done a cool comic Matcap for Nomad
Matcaps (short for "material capture") are a type of texture used in 3D graphics to give an object the appearance of a particular material or surface. A matcap texture is a 2D image that is applied to a 3D model & serves as a shader.
Matcaps are different from traditional texture maps, which are used to add color, depth, and detail to an object's surface. Matcaps, on the other hand, capture the lighting and shading properties of a particular material or surface & apply them to the object in real-time. This means that a 3D model with a matcap can have a highly realistic appearance, without the need for complex lighting setups or rendering processes.
The Fan Art subject in this video is Toby from Halo Jones from around 1984. Halo Jones was a popular cultural icon in the 1984 comic 2000AD for several reasons. Here are a few:
    1. Strong female protagonist
    2. Fascinating world-building
    3. Nuanced storytelling

One way to actually simulate the lighting for each plane/object within the sculpt is to keep the groups separate and assign a local matcap per selected shape, roll the matcap to where the light works, and work your way down - assigning the same matcap to each object and rolling it to where it matches the drawing and simulates a light source. That way the light is more controllable but you'll just have to rely on the curves in post to get the back outline.

Great comment. Pinned!!!! It works best with a black background you you don’t rely on that selected black out line. I would be cool to get a post process button that outlines without linking to selections.

@@SouthernGFX Agreed. I love the black outline personally, it has a very Christian Alzmann feel to it.

I think is a very creative thought to use the normal map for comic style. Very interesting. Thanks

I dont get it, why with all these 4 lights sources we can add plus white floor and wall, we cannot achieve realistic shadows with all the gradients or just black?
    Awesome video!!!
