  • A great memory from my childhood tv viewing...The 1973 Logie Awards, Melbourne, Australia (Australia's premiere television Industry Awards night) Beamed in live to households across the nation from The Southern Cross Ballroom, special guest, US actor Michael Cole - star of the then hit tv series "Mod Squad" is beyond four-sheets to the wind. ( i.e. shit-faced) Firstly, the celebrated host of the show, Bert Newton calls for Cole to come to the stage and he's nowhere to be found. Bert improvises as Michael Cole is extracted from the Men's room...later, and most infamously, drunker than before, Cole gets up to accept the award fro Best International tv show. Hollywood star Glenn Ford (probably quite hammered himself ) guides Cole to mic. Back in the days on live broadcast Cole mumbles the first expletive live on air in Australia. It caused a media sensation back in the day.

He was drunk so what?! He was living the life. So sweet! He then went into rehab and got sober on his own accord to save his marriage. I love him even more.

Rumor has it, he was at a luncheon earlier that day, had quite a bit of alcohol there, and had even more alcohol in the airport lounge before his flight to Melbourne, so once he was finally at the Logies, he was quite noticibly inebriated, but had even more to drink on the night so by the time he accepted his award he was totally spaced out.
Apparently, the reason why Cole took so long to get to the stage was because he had passed out in the hotel's restroom and had to be woken up.

I remember this so well!! Of course in 1973 they beeped out what he said, but they couldn't hide the fact that he was very very drunk. LOL

Michael did a subsequent interview many years later where he discussed getting his big break on the Mod Squad (just prior to which he was living homeless under an elevated highway in LA!) & opened up about his battle with alcohol addiction...it's in this later (sober) interview where it becomes apparent what a beautiful big-hearted guy he is! He was playing Heads Up with an unseen partner.
    "I'm emotional!"
    "YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY SHITFACED!"
    "NAILED IT!"

Something he and actress Eve Marie Saint have in common. They both dropped the S Bomb before a live audience. She in 1960 and He in 1973. Today of course there is nothing unusual about it. I've been to concerts where artist do it all the time.
