this was a pilot. It was never sold so it was never made into a series. CBS aired this once on July 4, 1989 as part of the CBS Summer Playhouse pilot anthology series.
😂😂😂As an Black Man born in Africa, living in America. People tell me I sound Jamaican, African and British at the same time. It unintentionally happens that way sometimes
Coming to America, from 1989, was a proposed weekly sitcom, is based on the 1988 Paramount Pictures movie of the same name. This pilot went unsold, but it was televised on CBS on July 4, 1989 as part of the CBS Summer Playhouse. The show was produced by Eddie Murphy Television Enterprises in association with Paramount. Furthermore, Murphy was listed as co-executive producer. The pilot was greenlit as part of a first-look deal with Paramount, Eddie Murphy, and CBS. Had the pilot been successful, then CBS would've proceeded with an initial 13-episode run. This was 1989, the end of the 80's, a year before In Living Color.
I liked it, because he's an African prince that is cut off to be taught responsibility. It would be hard to make it into a 7-8 year sitcom success--unless he is eventually cut off for good. But, pepperoni pizza would be almost surely off limits to people from that continent(likely due to religion).
Thanks for all the wonderful surprises, keep the "obscure" tv shows coming,im having a lot of fun so far.My favorite knew addiction is Out All Night, Vivica Fox,Pattie LaBelle and the rest of the cast are Amazing on this show.
Wow- never knew about this. 89- a year before In Living Color. I can see that this is something I would have loved at the time. Seems like they would have relied a lot on Davidson's great physical comedy gift. It held all the typical sitcom tropes of the time. Some foreign guy trying to fit in America (that wasn't considered "racist" at the time. Looks like they were building towards this Urkel/Carl father/son thing between Davidson and Mr. Mackey. Same on Fresh Prince with Phil and Will. Seems like they were really relying on the movie to be the brand. And to be fair, this is a property they could have squeezed a LOT of juice out of. The whole "foreigner in America" thing. Perfect Strangers did it for what? 6? 7 seasons? Also cool that Paul Bates was hired on. Looks like they were really going to play up the whole Dennis the Menace/Mr. Wilson's Wife never thinks Dennis misbehaves thing between Tariq and Mrs. Mackey.
People always remember , Rejection is Protection , if Tommy was on this show he probably wouldn't have been on "IN LIVING COLOR " so this was a blessing this show bombed 😁
As soon as Tommy Davidson started speaking I knew exactly why this show got canceled.
I just said that lol
That’s cold. The show is alright.
😂😂😂😂
INSTANTLY!
Damn you threw that shade tree lol
Had no idea this even existed.
This was televised on July 4, 1989 as part of the CBS Summer Playhouse pilot anthology series.
Right?!
@waldobageltopper 🤦♂️
Same here
Me either
Why Tommy Davison sound like he one of the original Jamaican Bobsled Team members
👂🏽😭🤣🤣🤣💀
Riiiiiight 😂😂 that's exactly what I was thinking.
@@SiouxieSioux Yeah LOL 😄😄😁👍
🤣🤣🤣
Yo what was the name of that movie i used to watch that all the time as a shorty
@@sheenashanta1205 The Jamaican Bobsled Team
Tommy going in and out of that accent
😂😂😂
Came for this comment 😂
For sure😅
😂😂😂
My man sound like he Jamaican lol
I was probably one of the five people who saw this back in 1989
July 1989.
You're right, because the other of us few hundred thousands saw it when it premired, the Summer of 1989.
😅😅😅 3 of the 5 are in this comment section 😅😅😅 I never saw it.. did it get past the pilot? Serious question 🙋🏽♀️
Tommy got that confused accent confusing itself. 😂😂
😂
😂😂😂it’s giving Jamaican
😂😂😂😂😂
yea. i thought it was just me. it sounded American, African and Jamaican.
😂😂😂😂😂
I had no idea they made a sitcom out of the film. I do, on the other hand, have several ideas why this got cancelled.
this was a pilot. It was never sold so it was never made into a series. CBS aired this once on July 4, 1989 as part of the CBS Summer Playhouse pilot anthology series.
Thankfully this wasn’t picked up
Facts...In living Color wouldn't have been the same if Tommy Davidson wasn't part of the cast
Call it a blessing in disguise
Thumbs down.
That accent swung past Jamaica every now and then 😂
I said the same thing 😂😂😂
😂😂😂As an Black Man born in Africa, living in America. People tell me I sound Jamaican, African and British at the same time. It unintentionally happens that way sometimes
😂😂😂😂
I find it comical that ever black person with an accent is automatically Jamaican. Like damn, is Jamaica the only country outside of America?
I see why this didn’t last past the pilot
Yeah I actually think Tommy Davidson is underrated when it comes to being funny but this..... AIN'T IT AT ALL
This is awful, but it’s still better than the Coming 2 America sequel 😂
Exactly
@@ItIsNotThatSerious facts...💩
Y’all are so damn dramatic lol
Tommy Davidson is such a comedy treasure
I was today years when I knew of such a pilot. Tommy Davidson is awesome.
I was “today years”????

Thanks for the information, never heard of this show.
I feel like I’ve discovered something from an alternate reality.
Wooooooowwwwwwww
Thank God this didn’t get picked up, In Living Color wouldn’t have been the same without Tommy Davidson.
Thanks for the copy paste knowitall
Varnel Hill deserved his own show
💯 that could have been a nice spinoff of martin
💯 😂
Never knew this existed. Think I'll stick to the original film. lol
Tommy Davidson's accent here is the best example of an actual "African American" 😂😂.... He had both accents
😂😂perfect assessment
They tried- glad that In Living Color came along for Tommy.
😂😂😂This was so bad I accidentally watched the whole episode 😂😂😂 The secondhand embarrassment is real.
It wasn’t that bad, they didn’t give ve it a chance. The accent is a hot mess tho😂
It is that bad and yes that accent is atrocious. 😂😂😂
Omg his accent. He stayed in it for about 8 minutes of the show lol, still I would have watched the whole series, Tommy is a legend
Tommy Davidson is talented and can do many accents but this ain't one of them.
Never heard of this show....and I loved the original movie
Paul Bates is comedic gold!
This script was terrible but tommy still found a way to give it life
You know what vibe it had to me? The Wayans brothers show with Shawn and Marlon Wayans that used to air on WB
@@WaldoBagelTopper yeah! And a little bit of good times

Very terrible,😂😂😂 tommy doing the most with the in and out American African concept
Tommy Davidson is killing me with that weak ass accent 😂😂😂
wtf 🤣🤣
This is so bad that it's good, beautiful train wreak.
😂😂😂
I see why this ain't go anywhere 😂
Yeah it's terrible
I said the same thing
Honestly, all of the 1980's Sitcom are amazing with incredible actors.
Never heard of this show. Now I no why
AJ Johnson stayed working on an 80’s sitcom that never made it do you hear me. Her and Lorenz Tate 😂 This show was a mess and his accent 😅
😂😂😂😂😂 not do you hear me
How did Eddie Murphy greenlight this putrid mess?
Cool Runnings accent😂
This is NEW to me, holy smokes
This was BAD….
Lol extremely.
Tommy Davidson’s accent was so horrible, he decided to only use it sparingly 🤣
Damn I wish I could go back this time in my life ! 🙃
Tommy Davidson a year before In Living Color debuted in 1990.
I only heard of this show a few years ago when Tommy Davidson mentioned it in an interview. I never saw this until now. Thanks for sharing!
Never knew this was a show. Now i know why
If that episode was any drier, my computer screen would have disintegrated!
😂😂😂😂😂
My phone practically crumbled in my hands..😂.. Drier than a Popeyes biscuit..
😂😂😂😂
Y'all going crazy on this show. 😂😂😂😂😂😂...
Tommy Davidson Takin' It to D.C. from 1990 is a stellar stand up special.
Thank you for sharing this pilot.
"Cause I'm a black cat"
You know Eddie didn't approve or forgot all about this to not have him in part 2.
It was so many one off sitcoms in the 80s/90s.
Tommy struggled with establishing a consistent accent. Its a struggle listening to him waiver in his accent. The Accent is key for this concept.
That accent
They were just making anything back in the day lol
At least they tried to be creative unlike today. 😂
They was like we going to see which one of these can actually work out🤣🤣 this was either a terrible idea or poorly excuted 🤣🤣
Eddie was a producer 😂
Thanks for this archive!!!
Oof that accent Tommy.
How could it be worse than Eddie's LOL
Tommy's shape up was
NON EXISTENT 😂
All them 80’s haircuts was not haircuts at all. Dudes just had hair 😂😂😂
@@Anderson_Se7en Stop lying.

yup, only the pilot aired.
Thank u 💯

Yeah, they were hoping for it to get the green-light and become a series but only this pilot was filmed.
You have the best like sitcom keep them coming. Thank you so much.
Coming to America would've been better as an SNL skit series than a movie and sitcom.
The first movie was/is a cult classic, but this show and the sequel is a big hell naaaah
@@TheLovesnowangel
I mean it should be a skit series on SNL, but movie-like similar to Eddie Murphy's "White Like Me" skit.
Thanks 🙏🏾 to ex production assistant 🎥 for saving and sharing these rare gems 💎
I found this channel by accident. I love it. I never heard of this show.
