I've heard that being said a lot! I bought it on kindle and somehow still feel a bit trepidatious about it, but I really ought to try soon :D Everyone and their mother is recommending it.

Aldous Huxley is a man! I had to look this up because I couldn't believe it. I think the copyright was just given to a family member/possibly his wife.

Not a flop of a video at all; it's honestly refreshing and so inspiring to see that you have actually managed to read the oldest books on your tbr since then!
Also, I would highly recommend Brave New World. We studied it in depth at school and its themes are so interesting! I'd recommend reading some of the theory behind the book after you finish it, it's so worth it!

  • @ShalomDove

Laura Huxley is Aldous Huxley’s widow, but she is also an author an musician ❤️ well done on that TBR! And the fact that you read all those books doesn’t make the video less exciting; it just means we get to celebrate your success with you ❤️💕 I have a mountain of classics on my TBR also... lately I’ve been thinking that the way to tackle them is to read one classic a month, but I haven’t tried yet. By the way , Tess and Brave New World are both on my TBR also, so if you felt like buddy reading either of them, I’d be happy to volunteer. Just sayin’ 😜

I love watching these reaction type videos and it's so refreshing to see one where most of the books have been read!
And wow! All the power to you for reading all those classics! The language and writing style intimidate me so much so I always pick other books to read instead. I did finally finish Pride and Prejudice last year (on the second attempt) and I was so proud of myself.
Also Brandon Sanderson. I'm working myself up to starting Elantris but the whole Cosmere universe is so intimidating.
Heidi made me smile. I love it and it's probably my favourite children's classic.

Well done for having read so many of your original oldest books!
I have thoughts on your new oldest TBR:
    1. Tess - read it, it's tragic but memorable!
    2. Brave New World - intimidating but interesting. Short, easy and weird. It keeps you distanced from the characters and is as much a thought-piece as a novel.
    3. Shirley - takes AGES to get going, but satisfying eventually. Pace yourself.
    4. The Count of Monte Cristo - EXCELLENT read! It is huge, but you will fly through it. There's a weird bit in the middle where the story shifts a couple of perspectives, but stick with it. The pay off is wonderful. Also, my husband recommends the audiobook narrated by Bill Homewood (if it's available to you, we got it on Audible in the UK), as he has listened to it 4 or 5 times in the last 8 years!
Haven't read 5 - 8, although the Jane Eyre ones sound good!
    9. Far from the Madding Crowd - I haven't read it, Thomas Hardy left me scarred after Tess! I think I could read it now its been a few years...
    10. The Brontes - on my TBR for this year too!!! I just need to read Tenant of Wildfell Hall and then I can read the biography. It is very intimidating. 1000 pages of biography?! I've heard that it is the best Bronte bio too.
Thanks for the video, as always. Loved your reactions to having read each book! And the rolly chair.

  • @LadyofLetters
    @LadyofLetters 4 года назад +2

I absolutely love Shirley - there's an amazing female friendship and the romance between Caroline and Robert is just to die for. However it does have a really slow section in the middle, so I'd say please just don't give up and keep going because the ending is WORTH IT! I'd also maybe recommend Far from the Madding Crowd over Tess as a first Thomas Hardy because it's a bit more uplifting.

You really slayed that tbr! I probably still have books from 2010 cause that was the time the bookstore in town closed and it made me go insane with getting books 😬 The Unexpected Everything is my favorite Morgan Matson book, I thought the romance in it was sweet and enjoyed the dog walking but my favorite part was seeing the main character and her dad’s relationship. I much prefer her later books starting with Since You’ve Been Gone.

I read Tess of the D'Urbervilles a couple months ago (it was also one of the oldest books on my tbr^^) and I definitely think it was a worthwhile read. It's one of those books where you can't really say you enjoyed it because the subject matter is not exactly enjoyable. But I do think it is an important read as it sheds light on female experience and suppression in the 19th century.

Shirley is amazing. I read it as a teen and a couple of years ago. I highly recommend it. I have owned the Juliet Barker book for nearly 20 years without reading it! And according to Amazon I bought the Count of Monte Cristo in 2007. Still unread. I have also read both the Thomas Hardy books. I predict you will either love or loathe Tess...mainly because of the annoying heroine. Oops gave myself away as to what I think! Far From the Madding Crowd is a really good book though. I read the Aldous Huxley book and it has not really stuck in my mind. I love the range of titles you have here and really enjoyed this video.

You could put all those books on your June TBR and do a reading vlog for them. I'd watch that, it sounds fun :)
I also own a bunch of classics that I haven't read and have been sitting on my shelves for years.
They also belong to the 10 oldest books on my TBR. And the others are Dutch literary fiction. Let's go from oldest to newest:
De zesde mei by Tomas Ross (a literary political crime thriller to do with the murder of a prolific politician) and has been on my TBR since 2007
De Steniging by Frenk van der Linden. Has been on there since 2008
TXT which is a collection of Dutch short stories from well-known authors of lit-fic. Been there since 2010 and only partly read because the stories haven't really been to my liking.
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens since about 2011/2012 (as a classic for the English reading list, but I didn't have the time to finish it so now I will have to reread the first half to finish of the book.
*The rest I more or less got at the same time*
Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Emma by Jane Austen
The Essential Kafka by Franz Kafka (still don't know why I got the English edition, I think the German one will capture the writing better since that is the original language it was written in and I am proficient enough in German to read it)
    Moby Dick by Herman Melville
    Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
I intend to read them all the time, especially the English books on this list but there are always other ones that I want to read more.

Tess IS very dark, obvs well-written, but I wouldn't be reading it just now, however old! But then, I don't love Hardy ( read a lot for school 🤮) I just find him too bleak. Great on descriptions of Dorset countryside! I prefer Trollope ( trash for Victorian Church Politics)
Brave New World much better. I keep being told to read COMC, supposed to be a quick read? 🇫🇷
