During lock-downs we were free to go outside as long as we wouldn´t meet other people. So I started to go on photography strolls in my direct neighbourhood, which is the inbetween of three cities, kinda rural, a little bit of woods, a river and a lot of quirky places and little gardens. All the photos i shot were in walking distance and I returned to the same places in different seasons, or parts of the day, with different lights and weather. It isn´t spectecular at all and I don´t know what to do with this now more than 3 years worth of photos (I don´t even have social media), but I improved so much in working with the light, trying out new perspectives and compositions and always find new little scenes to photograph. I just grab my camera with one lens (x pro 2 with 23mm) and walk out the door. That´s it. Even if I don´t take a picture it´s a little work-out. And some of these are the best landscape photographs I ever did, even if it´s just a shed with a hedge.
I think your Denmark series was one of your finest pieces of work Mads as it demonstrated that beauty is all around us. The trick as you say is to get out there and find it for ourselves.
Love how you work your local landscape Mads to produce really beautiful photography. I'm only 3 years at this photography game, and as much as I still enjoy epic photos from epic locations, I now find photos such as yours from Denmark to be much more interesting and, ultimately, more impressive. Thanks for the inspiration!
I travel a lot for work and some of your methods in the first part are things I've done to find locations of interest before a work trip to a new place.
So many good points in this video Mads, I'll have to watch again. But my main takeaway is not just to keep getting out there, but making the most of what you have. Sometimes we also have to check our expectations - not every shoot will be 'epic'!
This has been a bit of a kick in the butt. I really need to get out and explore my area and stop grumbling about it being flat and boring. Thanks for the kick.😅
I just realized how long ago the Storebæltsbroen video is. Time flies and I still enjoy every single of your videos. Your enthusiasm motivates me to get up at 4am every time. Greetings from the German/Danish border region 😊
I totally agree ! 1st year of photography as hobbyist, I wasn't so sure about the gear argument (it's not the gear but you). After 1.5years I thought : it's about being in the right place at the right moment Now after 2 years of practice, I totally agree that it mostly depends on planning and what type of shot I want to do, not the gear
Super helpful and motivating Video. Several photography friends and myself have been researching local areas and are planning as many outings as we can realistically manage. Because of the location and the everchanging environment we live in, we frequently get sidetracked to another area and do not make it to our planned destination lol Thanks for the info, tips and inspiration you consistently provide.
Just got back from Copenhagen and seeing how you captured Nyhvan as well as that palace was really cool. It’s so many people at nyhavn throughout the day so no idea how you got it that clean and straight on
I live 2 hours from Banff National Park. Close enough that I find it hard to shoot the "boring" stuff near my house, but far enough you can't go everyday. Good video, I really should be shooting more near my home. It would improve my photography a lot.
I'm lucky that I live near mountains so epic views are more about not being lazy. But the point of thinking local is overlooked because it is too familiar and we naturally discount the local possibilities. Also, working locally means you can revisit the sites regularly and often.
Great reminder to appreciate what is local. I like your practical suggestion for internet scouting. I live in a humid, tropical environment. Random searching for good locations isn’t very appealing. 😂
Just found your videos Mads! Love your content! Would be really, really helpful if you had shot settings (aperture, ss and iso) on all the shots you showcase in your videos. I've been a hobbyist photographer for some years now, and still struggling with what aperture to shoot with for different landscapes and lighting conditions.
Great topic! Time constraints may prevent me from driving to the sea coast or other locations. I'll take walks on a nature trail or walk through the city seeking interesting compositions. I spend a lot of time looking for interesting minimalist scenes. The quest helps teaching how to find images with a story.
What a great video. I wish there were more like this. I struggle with ideas so much as I live in relatively undramatic Oxford. The weather is also 99.9% average.
Great video Mads. Love your enthusiasm for photography. I live in a very challenging area for landscape photography. When I win the lottery I want to hire you to come teach me how to photograph my area.
Worldwide shipping except Greenland 😢 have bought 2 before and very happy with the results but had to ship to a friend in Denmark and ask them to forward them
The lockdown past few years made me appreciate my local landscapes and explore Hong Kong more 😁 great tips Mads. Google Earth is something I find myself snooping around a lot especially for looking for some moon alignments 😂 saves time from the scouting.
@@MadsPeterIversen definitely 😁 I usually plan around Photopills for the general alignment first then head over to Google Earth to check the street view on how visible the subject is from there or if any obstructing skyscrapers.
Not to brag but, I understand not everyone has the opportunity like myself living in Hawaii to have amazing photos in our backyard, but….I think that’s what makes you folks better photographers, because you have to go out and create your own stunning photos! Happy shooting! Have a great rest of your week!
I DOUBT YOU CAN TAKE GOOD PICTURES IN HOUSTON TX....WELL MAYBE PHOTOS OF MOSQUITOS....IF YOU ARE INTO MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY 😅😅😅I WOULD CHALLENGE EVERYONE TO FIND NICE PLACES TO PHOTOGRAPH IN HOUSTON TEXAS....IN JUNE JULY AUGUST....WHATEVER
This was extremely helpful. I suspect that my first time through this video I only captured a fraction of the wisdom you have accumulated. Thank you.
Thank you so much, Jack! I'm happy you benefitted from it! 🙏

That's exactly it, go out, explore, practice, get experience, and over time you'll be better :)
Because I am a foreigner from Europe, there must be an expert who facilitates the process of reaching places
💐
I think your Denmark series was one of your finest pieces of work Mads as it demonstrated that beauty is all around us. The trick as you say is to get out there and find it for ourselves.
Thank you so much, Jim! It's some of my own favorite work! 😁👍

Thank you so much, Brendan! Yes, it's definitely more rewarding to find your own great compositions and get the shot :)
Great video. The perfect combination of „keep it simple“ and „put the effort in“

Oh yes, time flies so fast! Cheers! :)
Very nice,Mads. This was a very useful video for me, in things you pointed out and in things you reminded me of. Thank you for posting.
Good video, Mads. Some really good pointers in there. Especially about tapping into different sources of local information to find places of interest.
I totally agree !

I agree 100% After one year of practice, most important gear is an alarm clock and some good coffee...
The photos within the book are absolutely phenomenal!😊
Thank you Anthony! They're also some of my favorites! :)
Great video Mads. So instructive and such beautiful images. Very inspirational.
Practical, down to earth and informative - as always! Thanks for the "epic" tutorial.
Very thought provoking advice here. Thus is a great reminder to take a look in one’s own backyard first for some inspiration. Thanks.👍👍
Great video as always Mads, Thanks for share your experiences and great work.
Loved the 'random place in England' with Nigel.

I have shot some of my best nature shots within the borders of the city I live in (Hamburg). You just have to find good spots and a good composition 😊
Exactly! It is often possible to find something really good very close :)
I live 2 hours from Banff National Park. Close enough that I find it hard to shoot the "boring" stuff near my house, but far enough you can't go everyday. Good video, I really should be shooting more near my home. It would improve my photography a lot.
Wow, I wonder if your "boring near my house" is "super epic" in my world 😅
I'm lucky that I live near mountains so epic views are more about not being lazy. But the point of thinking local is overlooked because it is too familiar and we naturally discount the local possibilities. Also, working locally means you can revisit the sites regularly and often.
Exactly, I definitely didn't start to recognize how amazing my local neighborhood was before I had done a lot of traveling :)
The photoshop course is worth it. Like this comment if you've also bought it!

Haha, I bet! 😅
I absolutely love your work. And this video is very inspirational, just what I needed. I so must get out more. Thank you 😊
You are welcome and thanks a lot for the kind words :)
off late, I am also exploring local places for my weekend photo sojourn 😇😇😇
Thanks for the inspiration!
🎯 Lord knows our attention spans can be challenged. Carry on. 👍🥂

that was great! Blasted with information.
Very good video, thank you! 🙂
it was epic dust spot on the matrix, passing through a whole year 😁.
Ha! It was indeed, and so annoying! 😅
Worldwide shipping except Greenland 😢 have bought 2 before and very happy with the results but had to ship to a friend in Denmark and ask them to forward them
The most important tip: If you want to take beautiful photos in your neighbourhood - live in a nice neighbourhood.
Exactly
This book looks amazing
Thanks a lot. I'm so happy about how it turned out! The print quality is extraordinary!
The lockdown past few years made me appreciate my local landscapes and explore Hong Kong more 😁 great tips Mads. Google Earth is something I find myself snooping around a lot especially for looking for some moon alignments 😂 saves time from the scouting.
Absolutely! It's a great program/app! Photopills also work great for lining the moon up with a foreground :)
@@MadsPeterIversen definitely 😁 I usually plan around Photopills for the general alignment first then head over to Google Earth to check the street view on how visible the subject is from there or if any obstructing skyscrapers.
Great stuff Mads !! I would be interested in a video about your luminosity masking in PS.
Thanks, Robert, maybe one will come one day. Else, actually, I have one on the channel. It's the old one from 2017 from Eibsee in Germany :)
Speaking of photographing locally… Still wishing for a workshop in Denmark. 😂😂😂 Another great video from you, Mads. Highly appreciated 👍😊
Yeah, I know people are asking for it. I'm still trying to work out how to make it the best possible :)
@@MadsPeterIversen well, with you as the teacher it can’t go wrong 😊

My estimated guess is there are many forest and semi-open areas around Berlin that could be explored :)
Great tips! I am sure the Danish Tourist Board should sponsor you 🙃
One could only wish but they "don't have a budget" 😬
@@MadsPeterIversendefinitely their loss...but sponsored or not...you're doing a fabulous job to promote your beautiful country! Great work as always!
Thank, Mads, tip 5 fine tuned my pp techniques. No pun intended😉
Your photos are great!! Tell me what level of zebra you are using.
100+ and thanks :)
Is that a cameo appearance by Nigel Danson at 3:55 😂
It is indeed ;)
Beautiful book Mads - which paper did you use?
Thank you! The glossy and lay-flat pages :)
9:09 HAHAHA
first tip should be live in a beautiful place
