I have been showing movies in my backyard on a 20ft screen for the several years. I've always tried showing movies that my audience never seen before. I picked Phantom Of The Paradise hoping none of the 25 people had never seen it before. At the end of the movie none of them had ever seen or heard of it before and they all loved it and still talk about it. I first saw it in 1974 in a theatre with a childhood friend and have loved it ever since.
Okay, that neon lighting bolt scene scared the shit out of me as a child, what was my mom doing taking me to see this? God bless her because this movie is one of the best to ever do it, musical horror. Extra props to Depalma and the whole cast, bravo!
I would have loved seeing it in a theater, but I recently got the shout factory bluray and have a very nice plasma HD monitor so was able to enjoy it the other day and any time I want now. I've told so many people about this film, many who took my advice loved it.
I saw it on TV like 8 years after the release when I was a kid. Blew my mind even if I didn't understand some stuff. Year after year I learned more bit by bit and it becomes a favorite of mine.
I love the golden ones that restore classic movies, such as Dr. Sapirstein. My husband has been assisting in restoring Harold Lloyd's old silents. It's truly a labor of love!
Because ultimately it's a loose adaptation of Phantom Of The Opera. It could have been done in 1974.... But not after 1986. Lloyd Webber's classic musical basically locked out any other adaptation from being made.
iirc there _was_ one in the works back in 1989, adapted by Jim Steinman, but it got scrapped mid-development. The original Paul Williams score was replaced entirely and there was a lot of crap shoehorned in, including Total Eclipse Of The Heart. I can see why it got canned. And it's a shame because this masterpiece deserves so much better. What the hell is Phantom without Faust? Madphantom and Dylan, I don't know if either of you are still planning on adapting this thing... but if you're gonna do it, i trust you youngins to DO IT RIGHT!
They should release an r version, which contains the aftermath when we see Winslow’s face come out of the disc pressing machine after being crushed, and so on
Swan Song. Jimmy page Moghul Lol! So lit! So spot on and way ahead of its damn time! Funny how people are getting bored of the crap coming out now and how the cult classics are only Growing better with age.. like good wine. Not vinegar like the punk capitalistic crap coming out now.. music AND film wise.
@@thepuppethead1188 Exactly! The film didn't "predict" anything - it only proves that the industry has _never_ stopped being horrible, never stopped deteriorating, not for one second.
I agree. All the examples of the Theatrical Release look the best, and when it shifts to the "Original Color Corrected" the skin tones are bloody, and the high contrast with the brightness level leaves many crucial detail in the dark.
If you have the original footage and would like the swan song etc logos back in I have been doing this for over 20 years and would gladly take this on to make it more solid. Saw this in the theatre when I was 4 and it has left a deep seeded impression on me.
I downloaded this to a USB stick using your directions, but when I play it on my Samsung TV it seems like the voices are about a half second off from the actor's lips. Not sure if that's just how it is, my TV, or what. Anyway, great work, I loved the color saturation, despite what someone said below. The only thing that could have been better was the Swan box overlaid while they're at the airport, it could have been a little less squarish and fit in the original lines better (maybe a little less white). But that is nitpick, I can't complain for the obvious untold hours you spent restoring it, making it available, and keeping it up on your website.
Awesome film in many ways! Ever wonder IF the list of famous artists and creators at 1:35 really did sell their souls? And this film is hinting at it" lol
I get here by searching for a one specific movie. The man/dude with some weird bird-like helmet/mask playing a keyboard or it was tech pipe organ - bcs sound was sth like pipe organ choirs in a cave in the jungle ! He something like play schemes to stop few adventurers in the same jungle. Does it sounds familiar to anyone ?
Quiero ver la peli es imposible me tira sólo música ace tiempo la vi cuando era jóven, me encantó he intentado volver a verla pero no me deja no sé porque si podeis subir la lo agradeceré gracias un saludo
3:01 is there any footage where the podium doesn't have the white insert? It's the biggest standout in terms of a mistake when watching the movie, in my opinion.
The problem was they were using the name "Swan song" which was the label name Led Zeppelin used. So basically they edited out a lot of scenes which used the name, though did leave it in in some scenes.
That footage would be the restored version of the film but it's been denied to be released. I believe the airport scene is only one where the original negatives were ruined with the overlay . . .
@@xceg yep, i spoke to ari kahan, the biggest phantom fan. without him we wouldn't have any of the blurays, nor the deleted scenes to go on them. the original negatives were sadly trashed.

Did you show The Omega Man" or another music film before Spinal Tap called "Bad News"?
This use to play on MTV, surprised they missed it
My mother-in-law showed it to me a few years back and it instantly became one of my favorite films. Everyone I've shown it to has also loved it.
this is one of the Best movies ever made and the soundtrack was a head of its time

I saw it at the theater when it came out in 1974 Loved it so much I went back 4 times more that week and brought all my friends!
Me, too! I bought the record album that same week.
Do you live in Winnipeg?
I'm pretty sure my bro and I told our folks we were seeing something else. Amazing experience.

I know literally nothing about restoring films, but I would love to learn and help you out in any way I can
I never thought i would find another movie as cool as Rocky Horror until i found this one!
Both movies are masterpieces.
This is better than Rocky Horror. Better film, better music.
Rocky Horror stole the "Frankenstein" lab bit from this movie, this was filmed first.
@@necromayathough this was filmed first. ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW was a stage show before this was filmed. So it didn't actually steal from this

Why in the hell has no one made a Broadway musical of this movie!
Because ultimately it's a loose adaptation of Phantom Of The Opera. It could have been done in 1974.... But not after 1986. Lloyd Webber's classic musical basically locked out any other adaptation from being made.
I'm planning to!
I had a concept of it awhile ago, I’m trying to see how much rights would cost for me to have the script to the film.

One of my very favourite films and much underrated/forgotten. Rad
Glad they restored it. It was such a fun movie to watch, back in the day!
Un clásico insuperable.👍🏼🇺🇸👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Brilliant, even after all these years.
Great movie, Great music.
Omg, i saw this movie 6 times , still love it ..
This is wonderful - thank you!
Fantasma del paraíso 1974 hoy su música es fresca, es como si no pasara el tiempo, y la balada de Jessica Harper un encanto.
Such a great film but the color-corrected version looks over-saturated.
Yeah...Winslow looks like a Oompa Loompa.
I could watch this move another 20 times and still enjoy it as much as I did the first time I saw it (please tell me I'm not the only one) :P
I've seen it probably 50 times. As long as you enjoy it, keep watching it :-)
I really love this movie I saw it on Encore back in like 1997 and I can't believe that so many people enjoy it as much as I do
Thank you! Love the movie and the extended music score to The Hell of it!
I was a young kid when it came out ND loved it ever since...

Heck yeah

I have an Original LP. And here in LA was impossible to get before 2000. I was the first to get the CD and DVD from Canada.
