BYD is in huge debt though !? Like toyota ! Additionally, my understanding is that BYD’s margin on its vehicles is extremely small. It’s just in the aggregate that they are making money right now.
Don’t sleep on BYD. They just finished their factory here in Thailand. They have a factory in Mexico. And are building factories in Brazil, Turkey, and Hungary. They are also building a fleet of cargo ships to transport their vehicles. Second biggest EV battery company, semiconductors, lithium mining and refining. They have been building EV buses and trucks in Lancaster, California for quite a few years. Their Seal model is half the price of the comparable Model Y here in Thailand.
Brian, I rely on you for your unbiased reporting. For me, the elephant in the room is that nobody (that I'm aware of) is addressing whether Elon's bizarre statements, actions and political endorsements are having a profound effect on Tesla, and not in a good way. It is, in my humble opinion, both polarizing and alienating. Can you, will you, see if there is legitimate concern that his actions could really harm the brand and growth of Tesla.... Thanks!

yes. Elon was great before, but the twitter thing and now the politics make him completely distracted for one hand, and the press is awful for the brands on the other hand. The companies would do better if he were to officially step away from them at this point.
As a long term investment I’m definitely a Tesla guy, but not because they sell cars. That said, I’m really considering Rivian for a trade. And it’s not a roulette wheel, it’s sports betting. Definitely gambling, but somewhat informed gambling. There are a lot of rumblings for the short term: gross margin positive, new delivery van partners, expanded partnership with VW Group. Lucid is being new suv to market so it’s eating 🍽 up all the money 💰 even if lucid is turning 35% profits from lucid car. And they could be developing small car or small cross over !!! That burns through cash fast
I believe (or at least hope) that the talent in place at Tesla can take what Elon has created and run with it effectively, regardless of what Elon does with his future.
Not happy about it, but I worry that Model S is going to die, along with the X. It does not generate enough sales to be worth much R&D, and they are putting their R&D into Optimus and robotaxi. I think it will just cruise until they decide they can make more money producing something else with the same factory space.
They own far too many shares to recover any meaningful percentage of what they've invested, and since it's publicly traded, those sales would have to be reported.
I can't imagine why the Saudis are throwing so much money into the Lucid hole. It's a great product , but at a price that makes the market for it real small and they may be many years away from even a small margin, if they don't go belly up before that. I know that the Saudi have realized that the oil gravy train can't run forever and have already made a start in securing manufacturing In Saudi Arabia and manufacturing of EV's would be a good fit , especially since they would already have a controlling interest in a successful product. Maybe this is the plan.
That Tesla have such high margins tells me that they CAN match Chinese EV prices, but they just simply chose to charge us more for bigger profits. Yet for some reason, the government is imposing tariffs on Chinese EVs, so that Tesla can continue to overcharge customer and maintains their gigantic profit margins. Come on Elon. Drop the prices already. You promised that prices were coming down 20 years ago. Where's our $12,000 cars?
They are in the business to make money and China has huge advantages that even Elon has spoken of. Tesla revolutionized manufacturing cars, and China does what they do so well and copied it and do it a lot cheaper because of labor and resources.
Tesla is still growing relatively fast while maintaining very little to no debt, unlike the rest of the competition. They must maintain a certain level of profit margin to keep it that way. Yes they could sell their products at near cost, but not while there’s still plenty of demand. You might want to take some economics and business classes to understand this historically proven way of operating a successful profitable business.

That's my understanding. They do make a profit, though a small one, and they're doing so while continuing significant expansion.

I agree. I think Elon Musk is hurting Tesla with his radical right wing comments and Nazi salute. Pathetic.
I have said this before, I personally know folks who would like to buy a Tesla but don’t due to the idiotic behavior of Musk.

They're idling the cybertruck lines... not enough demand. I love the model y and 3, but if you make a lot of people hate you, it's bad for sales.

Nice turn of phrase: "homeopathy levels of dilution". Does Elon actually work at Tesla anymore?
Not much evidence of it recently, but the executive bench is deep and effective.
