Ironic living is a first-world problem. For the relatively well educated and financially secure, irony functions as a kind of credit card you never have to pay back. In other words, the hipster can frivolously invest in sham social capital without ever paying back one sincere dime. They don’t own anything they possess.
Sorry, but the '90s were, in hindsight, one long vapid and vacuous
decade of irony. Grunge was laced with irony (hair metal bands that
traded in spandex for flannel were suddenly considered sincere); the
show of the decade, _Seinfeld,_ was a show "about nothing" and 100%
ironic; the most popular movies were soaking in irony, from _Clueless_ and _Pulp Fiction,_ to _The Blair Witch Project_ and _Titanic_ (yes, the Titanic...the ship sinks and the characters don't!); you even had a spokesperson Alanis Morissette sing a generational anthem "Ironic" that completely misused the term in every single part of the song, which one could argue is a form of irony too, but it wasn't intentional (as Ed Byrne said "The only ironic thing about that song is it's called 'Ironic'").
Which decade(s), if any, do you think were worthy and meaningful by your standards?
Your skewed European perspective is not relevant or useful here.
I can vividly recall the cool, detached posturing of American
teenagers, particularly middle-class Caucasians, in the '90s. To be vulnerable or authentic, to be sincere, was death in those days. They actively did not care. The archetype was the slacker who slouched
through life in plaid flannel, alone in his room, misunderstood. And
when they were bored with not caring, they were vaguely angry and
melancholic, eating anti-depressants like they were candy. It signaled a deep aversion to risk. As a function of fear and pre-emptive shame, ironic living bespeaks cultural numbness, resignation and defeat.

Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip said that when Nirvana opened for them, they left as soon as they finishrd their set and left. So did a lot of the fans. Gord liked hanging out with, bands who played shows with them. Nirvana would have nothing to do with them. Gord was not very impressed with them as people. "They were assholes, they played, and they left." He later said "You don't need an anvil to fall on your head to know that heroin is a one-way street."
Kurt was isolated, and almost friendless. He had pals who would buy him guns and ammunition. In many bands they took care of each other. Chris took care of other bands. Does anyone know if Chris ever got to know Kurt?
I got nothing.... Layne and Chris both gone..... there's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said about these two..... deeply missed..... along with Kurt, Mike, Chester, Andy, Scott.... and ALL the others..... left us way too soon..... save me a seat....
This made me smile :)
rip chris and layne.. and to my hero who weren't there to this interview i miss you kurt even if you died when i was 1month old
"They better watch their step... don't take any back alleys home" fuckin lol, these 90s rockers and their sarcasm.
And of course you cant not name the reigning champ of it all himself, Mike Patton
TheIndescribableMan Oh yeah...Mike Patton is the best!
Three of the greatest frontmen we’ve ever seen. And ever will see.
Chris and layne and Mark and Scott rule
I wonder if Eddie is fine
3 of the Legends there :-* Chris and Layne R.I.P. :-* Love this video :-)
Awesome
And by 2020, I thought Chris would be the only one still alive by then
that interviewer guy was such a dork 😂 i like when chris said they all piss in the same container that he will have to clean up later, and he just does an awkward laugh, like he knows he will
I love how Eddie just kisses everyone. Adorable.
3 of the best right there just missing curt wouldn't that have been something r.i.p boys just the best 4 groups ever........
Man What a great time RIP Chris An Layne Both bands don't get enough "respect" Nirvana was so over rated an I know I'll get shit for that but I am an was a big Nirvana fan but AIC an Soundgarden are so much more talented IMO.
chrono050 I think I saw an interview where Kurt said he was sick of Smells Like Teen Spirit.
so much truth
I don't agree..nirvana was the best. There's a reason why Kurt was king. His music was simple but deadly..and catchy and in ur face. Nirvana changed the musical landscape compared to the other bands. Just my opinion.
Agree 100%, Nirvana was solid, but overrated. They don’t come close to Soundgarden, AIC or Pearl Jam.
@@ixishadesixi5101 But when comes to their voices Eddie Vedder's voice is the last. Chris Cornell had the best voice in grunge. The second is Layne Staley and then Kurt Cobain.
Best video of all time
Interviewer was a bit crass. Gotta love how Cornell doesn't stand idly by while he tries to be cute.
Those voices omg
