I have seen both the moon on a river and fire flies at night and slept in the woods more times than I can count (thousands, between living in the woods for 16 years, and being a wildland firefighter, and hot shot for 4 of the 12 years).The moon was just last year on the Sacramento River Delta. We had stayed at some dump of a campground and had a horribile time, but the one night the river looked so surreal from the moonlight, while we had a campfire next to the river and could hear it quietly running, I told my husband it was like a beer commerical or something. But I would go relive that bad trip, just to see that surreal blue moon shining over the river. Had a similar experience high in the San Gabriel wilderness of Southern California one summer on a fire, near a creek. Those kinds of times stay with you deeply. I still miss the fireflies on evening in Upstate, NY after a good late afternoon/early evening thunderstorm in summer. The longer our pasture grass, the more there were.
