      I hope the music/songs gets a lot of credit, as I hope they are not overlooked. Every single song is pitched perfectly throughout the series. Whoever chose the music, and the talent who sung it, they deserve so much praise, which I felt has not been there much.

    You spoke about Nick's coming out scene with his Mum & how it would be great for parents to watch & learn how to support their queer child.
    After my husband passed away 11 years ago, I sat my teenaged son & daughter down and talked to them about how they could talk to me about relationships or sex or birth control or drinking or whatever. That I'd rather know things so I could help, if help was needed. That I would be equally fine with boyfriends or girlfriends, or neither. That I wasn't going to "expect" them to get married or have kids or anything, unless it was what they wanted. This was before either of them had started dating.
    And I think, because I had laid that as the foundation in advance, we never really had any "coming out" scenes, even though both of them now identify as queer. Instead, it was just another normal topic of conversation (as I believe it should be).
    There may have been times over the years where it's been a bit TMI (lol), but I'd never trade it for knowing LESS about my kids. 😊💖

      @@JackieRossLavender Amazing thing is that per Joe and Kit, they've received messages about how the show, and this particular scene, helped many to come out to their parents when they shared it. I'm what you'd call an elder gay and my coming out experience (1974) was sadly rather violent, but I got through it have lived happily and long enough to see this and other shows/films affirm our queerness. It is utterly magnificent to see.

    Just a little Easter egg that not many caught on to: when Olivia Coleman said "I wasn't born in the 18th century" is a nod to her role, playing Queen Anne in "The Favourite". I don't think they could have found a better actress to play Nick's mum. :)

    When she says 'you're not ruining *my* life', i know she trying to reassure him but I also always see that as a command, an imperative- as in 'don't you dare go away.' She's scared for him. It always gets a lump in my throat.

    When Kit picked up Joe at the beach scene and you hear Joe as Charlie saying "Don't you dare drop me" - that was of course in the script and book, but said with real fear from Joe, as he said in interviews he was scared that Kit would drop him into the freezing cold Herne Bay seawater.

    I have seen the entire series about 15 times, if you count watching reactors. My two favorite moments of the entire series are when Nick shows up in the rain, out of breath., at Charlie's front door That was the Heartstopper moment for me and I cry every time. . The other was when Nick leans in close to Charlie's face and says What". It just shows how intimate Nick wants to be with Charlie.

    Even though I had already watched the full Patreon version, I had to watch this to see all the live stream comments. And I thought of another couple of things that I didn’t comment on with that version: “Don’t let anybody make you disappear, Charlie“ is one of my favorite lines from the entire series. And even though Ben doesn’t show up again in the later Heartstopper books, I kind of hope Alice brings him into the next season just so Bash can continue to be a part of the show.

  • @AntoniaSweet1
    @AntoniaSweet1 2 года назад +42

    I always appreciated that Nick didn’t kiss Charlie in front of everyone. You have to remember that at that point Nick thought Charlie might want to break up with him. It would have been unfair of him to kiss him in front of everyone and put pressure on him to stay together. He instead takes him aside, pleads his case and when he’s sure Charlie wants to be with him, they kiss. Perfection.

    • @corvus1374

      The entire show is about consent. The only example to the contrary is Ben.

    • @tiffanyvantine3322
      @tiffanyvantine3322 2 года назад +6

      Yes! So much good representation of consent (except Ben)!
      Ep 3. Charlie-“would you kiss me?”
      Nick-“yeah…”
      **Kiss**
      Charlie-“are you Ok?”
      Ep 5. Charlie-“I want to kiss you so bad right now,”
      Nick-“OK.”
      Charlie-“you don’t have to.”
      Nick-“I want to!”
      Just two of at least a half dozen examples I can think of off the top of my head. Even amongst their friends, there is no pressure to do anything. Don’t be pressured to come out. Does it feel good to tell someone? Don’t spill my secrets when I’m not ready.
      What would the world be like if we all checked in with each other about how we feel about different situations, rather than just expecting, pushing, and demanding?

      I was scared at that point and thinking he won't kiss him in front of everyone ??! Pressure on him to stay together and outed himself publicly just like that as if it's not a big and private thing he did it properly an intimate declaration with an amazing Hollywood kiss

    I've watched this series over 5 times now and I'm really impressed by the little details they put in that will factor into future storylines.
    (Spoilers for Season 2 and the books)
    Throughout the show they have Charlie disappearing at lunch. The main reason that he probably started eating in the art room was because he was avoiding bullies, but also so he could manage his eating without people noticing. (It's also probably where he met Elle if she was working on her landscape in there over lunch before she moved schools.) There were a couple times where Tao asked where Charlie was but figured that he was probably with Nick, but then that one lunch scene Nick was with his rugby friends when Harry threw the ball at Tao, which meant that Charlie was off somewhere eating alone again, despite being on good terms with Nick and Tao still. Then at the theater when Nick asked if Charlie wanted popcorn he said he wasn't hungry, and again when Charlie was talking to Tory he said he wasn't hungry for pizza and would eat later. Even Ben mentioned that he had hardly any friends and always ate alone, which is weird considering we know that he had friends that would eat lunch with him. All throughout the season they set up the fact that Charlie struggles with his eating, and I appreciate that set up for what I assume will be season 2 and 3.

    I think the whole series is an instruction manual on how being honest, communicating properly and handling situations with sensitivity ends with acceptance and love ❤️
    I also know that everyone who has ever read the books or watched the TV series has fallen in love with Nick Nelson. All the teenage boys and girls have had a crush on him and us parents just want to scoop him up in a big hug and protect him as he is so adorable ❤️
    Charlie is fragile and needs protecting too, but just watching Nick try to figure out his place in the world while the only thing he knows 100% is how he feels about Charlie is so sweet and endearing.

    I have loved watching this alongside you! I do think though, that Charlie's low self-esteem at the beginning of the episode is much more caused by Ben than Harry. I'm not saying that Harry's bullying doesn't hurt him, but I also think Charlie really means it when he says he's used to it, I think he is much more able to cope with that however unpleasant it is. I think as he says to Tori, it's Ben's treatment of him that makes him feel it would be better if he didn't exist - in his head, neither Ben nor Nick would have had to step out of the closet, and risk similar treatments if it wasn't for him.

You know what really pissed me off about Charlie in the book Nick and Charlie was that when they were in Paris they promised they would always talk to each other no matter what and then he went ahead and broke that promise by not talking to Nick. I have watched this over and over this past month bit obsessed tbh

    I don’t know how my experience would cause any resonance amongst the 1970s to 1990s born queer people. For me, this generation been through a dry desert of shows like this. So when I watch this, I could feel the wholesomeness, the progress, as it should be. But then I fell into a mourning phase. As if I sealed my own coffin of something I have never had in my life during the youth ages.
    I have come out to almost everyone but not to my parents yet. I talk bravely about my sexuality and fighting for equality but I’m a coward to my parents. They might not even be homophobic, but this is just so hard to do. And this double life feeling sometimes drive me crazy.

    I like your interpretation of Charlie quitting the rugby team as him taking back some power. I always interpreted it as him trying to cut all ties with Nick and get things back to before they became friends. I'm not sure which was the intent now. I am curious if he'll end up back on the team next season as he keeps playing rugby in the comics, but they've diverged enough from the comics it wouldn't be a stretch for him to stop playing.

    The coming out scene for me makes me smile but cry all at once. I smile, because it is so beautiful, and every single LGBTQ+ person deserves to have a parent like Nick's mum, her reaction was just beautiful. And then I cry, as a large chunk of LGBTQ+ people will have the complete opposite experience. My own mother just has complete indifference about my sexuality. She doesn't want to know. I have approached it many times, but even if I did say to her I way gay, she wouldn't accept it. She would move the subject on, and talk about the weather, or TV etc. Anything to block out any conversation about sexuality. That's why I cry when I see that scene.

    hi! I'd like to make a case for why Ben is a much more complex character than he may look on the surface thanks to the amazing acting of Bash. in this episode, if you look closely, you can see that while Charlie is telling him that he hates himself he is actually shedding a tear. it is subtle but it is there. I actually never noticed it until I rewatched the series a 3rd time. Ben has definitely treated Charlie like garbage and there is no excuse for assault or the verbal abuse that he has subjected him to. I would just like to say, though, that I appreciate the show giving us such a nuanced character in Ben because very closeted people like him do exist who suffer from extreme internalized homophobia. I also really hope that we get more development of his character next season because he pretty much disappears after Harry's party in the books, and who doesn't want more Bash next season?
    thanks so much for your amazing reactions to this show! as a 39-year-old bi woman, I wish we had a show like this when I was a teen, but I'm so glad it exists now. ❤️

    When I came out to my parents in 1975, my Mum replied "Well, don't tell people at church until I've had a word with them" and my Dad said, "Thank heavens for that, we won't have to see Aunt Ada again" (a very nasty relative who was racist, homophobic and exceptionally right-wing.
    Mind you, they might have had a hint, after we saw "Thunderball" at the cinema (me aged 4) and I announced that I was going to marry Sean Connery when I grew up,,,

I hope schools have come far now in 2022, compared to when I was in secondary school all the way back in 1997 to 2002.

    I’m hoping Isaac is given a girlfriend who crushes on him. I think she should be quite talkative. Every scene with Isaac and his girlfriend would be him sitting quietly while she talks nonstop. Then each scene could end with her saying something along the lines of, “I always love our talks.”

    For me, the thing that bothered me so much about Tao was how all he did was ride Nick down in front of Charlie from the get go. When it was clear Charlie was clearly falling for Nick, Tao did all he could to dissuade him from being with the Nick, going so far as to ruin his birthday outing. Then having the nerve to feel excluded because Charlie didn't tell him right away? As many a Drag Queen would say "Bitch Please". Worse still, he knows how Charlie blames himself to the point of feeling like a bother to others, but then has no compunction to yelling at Charlie about how it's all his fault. The fact is Tao projected far too many of the his own insecurities onto Charlie and made him feel worse. I am glad he finally clued in, but I was bothered by Charlie feeling he had to apologize to Tao. It left me a bit cold and annoyed. Still, looking forward to season 2 and 3.

      Your valid concern is a writing issue. By elevating both Tao and Harry into more prominent roles, there's a lot unwritten regarding their behavior. It's a throw-away line in episode one, but it appears that Tao was Charlie's main support when Charlie was bullied in year nine. It seems we are to assume that it was Nick's group of friends who did the bullying. Nick has allowed his friends to bully people without saying anything to his friends until later episodes. This leads Tao to think Nick is playing a long con--especially since Charlie was bullied at the cinema by Harry--and this is supposedly months into Nick and Charlie's friendship.

      @@piper998877 You make some valid points, but Tao still blamed Charlie knowing how fragile he is and that can't be ignored.

    Just to add my thoughts to this. The problem is that this wonderful show is sort of preaching to the converted. Some straight people, when the phrase ‘LGBTQ’ is even mentioned, that would immediately turn them off to watching something like this and more than that, would try and change the subject. Yes, that situation has happened to me recently! ☹️

    The thing about Isaac is that I feel Alice should give him a complete makeover, remember he is Aled's replacement, however they share a lot of similarities in personality and wardrobe, the only thing they don't share is sexuality because Aled is gay and Isaac is asexual.

    i loved your reactions to heartstopper. i'm glad you enjoyed the show. you are so sweet and thoughtful.
    i’d love to see your reaction to a show that i loved with all of my heart and was honestly one of a kind, and that is bad buddy.
    bad buddy is a thai lgbt+ series that you can easily find on youtube on the official GMMTV channel, directed by an openly homosexual director in thailand. each episode is divided into four parts. the company gives you the possibility to make reaction videos by simply filling in a form after recording each reaction. the video is approved in about two days normally and is free to be posted on youtube. if you are interested, i can pass you the form on twitter. if you want to post a cut version on youtube, as you did for heartstopper, and a full version on patreon, that’s great too. i’d simply love to hear your thoughts on the series.
    i think it honestly deserves to be known worldwide because it has such good queer representation and it also is structured to be a safe place for queer people since it is set in a world where homophobia doesn’t exist.

    I just wanted to make a comment, not loaded or aimed at you, I'm commenting here because I just finished watching your reaction 😅
    I've watched a lot of Heartstopper reactions, as I think we all have, and the last episode is the one that annoys me the most (not the episode itself) from the reactors point of view. More specifically the coming out scene. Nearly every reactor has comments along the lines of 'this is how it should be' or 'that's not realistic' and so on. It's almost like I'm supposed to feel bad that I had a very positive happy experience.
    Obviously I have endless empathy for those that did have negative or traumatic experiences, but there are a lot of us who did have the better version. My parents didn't care at all, my three older brothers were supportive and protective and my entire extended family was embracing.
    But it's not just the reactors, it's the endless comments in the comment section that belittle or negate those that weren't traumatised, like we somehow didn't earn it or something.
    I'm not going to apologise for having a good experience. Sorry, not sorry!

    • @JackieRossLavender
      @JackieRossLavender  2 года назад

      i’m not entirely sure why you feel that way (and i’m sorry you do) but you certainly shouldn’t feel bad or belittled that you had a positive experience. You should feel happy and grateful. I can only speak on my poor experiences of coming out and wish I had such a positive experience as you or like Nick has in the show.
      I think it speaks more to your personality that you feel the need to be “sorry not sorry” or that you feel attacked for having a positive experience. I haven’t seen a single comment in any of my videos over the past 6 years that had belittled someone for having a positive experience.
      As a community we are not here to bask in our negative experiences. We are here to support and uplift eachother and if you aren’t capable to use your positive experiences to lift other people up then you need to look inwards.

    • @JackieRossLavender
      @JackieRossLavender  2 года назад

      I also think it’s very unfair and telling that you get annoyed by reactors point of view in this episode. You say you get belittled by your positive experience yet you’re telling me my experiences of my coming out experience annoy you because they weren’t positive like yours? seems kind of selfish?
      so no, I don’t think you should feel bad for having a positive experience. But I also won’t apologise because I had a bad experience.

    I've really loved your reaction videos, they're some of the best. Except, twice now you've dropped bombshell spoilers about later volumes and that sucked. If that's just the type of reactions you're going to do, that's your prerogative, but might I suggest adding a spoiler warning? To be fair, I have skipped over most of your introductions to binge the series so maybe you did. I'd bargain that most if us haven't read the graphic novel though and don't want to know what is going to happen in season two or four. Sorry, don't want to sound hyper critical because your perspective adds so much to the conversation, it's just those two spoilers were painfully jarring.
