I listened to Whatever and Ever Amen all the time and loved every track, then one day on my drive to work this song just jumped out at me, I’m in love with it and have been since that day. I search RUclips for covers of it and as another comment said, it’s my favourite song of all time. My daughters aged 20 and 22 love it as much as me too.
I am fascinated when that happens to me, that is, when I listen to an album for a while and it isn't until much later, maybe when you mind is open to it, that a song hits you. It's happened a few times in my life.
Just heard this song for the first time a year ago and its quickly becoming one of my favorites ever. The melodramatic lyrics are so perfectly matched with the piano backing.
How did I miss this? I learned about 75% of the bass line to this song, then for some unknown reason, never got back to it. Time for me to finish learning it. It'll be perfect to practice playing along with this video:) Ben you just can't beat this raw and stripped down stuff). Thanks so much for sharing!
Such a great artist/performer. He's been a little under the radar it seems. I just discovered him recently, and enjoy all of his music. I like the way he shares the creative process in some of his "Lightening Bugs" clips.
A little? I think he’s more or less off the radar. BFF was known for Brick. I’m not sure Ben Folds and anything else he did was better known than that. And I’ve never understood why.
I still remember my older brother and his “dorky” (aka smart) friends from (class of ‘97) the small Catholic high school we went to reminiscing about some stupid self-reflection survey or something they had to fill out on their senior retreat with one question being “In 3 words, describe yourself and your relationship with Christ,” and one of them putting down “selfless, cold, and composed.” Me, being 7 years younger (class of ‘04) could not appreciate their inside Ben Folds joke until I got to high school and gradually over 4 years became perhaps an even bigger Ben Folds fan than all of them. It didn’t make their “selfless, cold, and composed” story any funnier (You had to be there I’m sure😅) but decades later I wonder how few high schoolers are ever even exposed to music with the harmony, originality, and lyrical depth of songs like this one
That goes for most any song designed to be played with a band. Drums driving the tempo, bass driving the song forward:) I love these stripped down raw performances:)
There’s some songs that I never get tired of listening to. This is one of them. Sheer perfection.
This has been my absolute favorite song for 23 years.
This song is amazing. And BF's piano playing is incredible. Like how little Richard's playing would hit you in the heart.

This song just makes me melt. These guys are so underrated.

Have you heard this rendition by the Sacramento State Jazz singers? Holy crap!! It gave me goosebumps!
I love this song so much. The lyrics hurt so good. Lol.

I always figure the BF stuff should have a lot of views on YT and it never does. Oh well - everyone else is wrong.
I love this song so much.

thanks for this performance!! thanks for all the tunes Ben!
Great!! but I still need that bassline!!
I love the current Ben Folds voice. He sounded like this since Songs for Silverman.
Level42 something about you
Really isn’t the same without the bass and drums. Still great tho!
You're right, its better
