  • The Rode NT1 and Lewitt LCT 440 Pure are very similar microphones and they are the same price. In this video I do a quick comparison between the two.

    In further listening, I think that the NT1 might have a bit more low end, and the LCT 440 Pure seems to have a bit more air in the high end. Still really close in sound.

    • @riOdariot
      @riOdariot 2 года назад

      It's not that the Rode has a heavier bass, but rather the Lewitt one scoops the low end, so in comparison it sounds like the Rode has more bass, but it actually has no bass boost.

    I prefer the Lewitt. It is cleaner and wider, but needs a hint of EQ high pass filter, maybe because of some proximity effect. The NT1 has a more grainy and punchy nice sound that could fit well for some users. Its a question of style essentially. Both are very good mics for the price.

    440 wins. Quite possibly the new standard in terms of sensibly-priced vocal mic. The presence it has is unsurpassed and requires almost no EQ correction apart from a HPF (for vocals, of course). It's like you can just add compression and reverb... and it's fully baked. Best mic under £500. Fact.

But I'd use the NT1 on anything that I don't want to compete with the lead. Or: _do_ use it on lead, and just give a little touch of a quality EQ, say 2k +, to bring it forward a smidgeon. I like the sound of the NT1 a lot better. Unfortunately, because the compact size of the Lewitt is very attractive. Easier for reading copy for VO and less obtrusive for RUclips, and better for travel. Hard choice, but I'm leaning towards the Rode since sound rules the day.

    Lewitt Pure wins, not by a mile but has the best balance between bass to the high end, better articulation without over emphasis anywhere. The NT1 had a boomier character, not quite as articulate and the bottom end sounded a lot like the 7b. Both mics sound better than the 7b overall.

      I think the SM7b gives a sound that is easy to listen to for a long time. It's got a smooth sound that doesn't get irritating (it's not overly boomy, overly shrill or sibilant or harsh). Having said that, since getting the LCT 440 it has become my most used microphone, by far. It has a good, balanced sound and it's suck a compact, convenient package. It's sensitive, super low noise and doesn't get in the way. The LCT 440 Pure my favorite mic I have right now.

I know in some other cases I was nearly touching the pop filter with my mustache. Unfortunately there is no way to move the pop filter closer with the shock mount the way it is. If you really need to get close to the mic you could remove the pop filter and be very careful with your technique, or you could try to rig something up with the pop filter. But the way it normally mounts doesn't allow movement.

      I haven't personally used the AT4040, so I can't say which of those two I'd chose. I will say that getting closer won't make it sound brighter. If anything, the proximity effect will make it sound more bottom heavy. As long as you have a well treated room, staying back a few extra inches might allow the lows to drop off a bit and let the top end catch up some.

    Hey, I've bought the Rode NT1-A now but have the problem that when I make a recording on OBS or stream man always hear the keyboard or even switch the birds outside the window if you have the window open ... you can do that somehow handle which some programms or something like this?

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  5 лет назад +3

      The NT1-A is a very sensitive mic that will pick that stuff up. There are some things that could help a little (noise gate, software noise reduction), but the best thing you can do is just get the mic as close to you as possible. The closer the microphone is to your mouth, the lower you can set the gain while still getting good audio levels on your voice. This will help reduce the volume of background sounds.
      A large diaphragm condenser probably isn't the best option for streaming unless you are in a fairly quiet room. If you are streaming/recording near a sometimes open window and other background noises, a microphone with a bit less sensitivity and a little more directionality could be beneficial.

    Great comparison! I noticed the clip with the SM7B sounded a lot noisier than the other two. Did you change your location or something ? Is it preamp noise? I thought SM7B was very quiet! Would appreciate your response because it is definitely one of my options too!

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  4 года назад +1

      It might have been pre-amp noise, but I don’t remember exactly how I had the SM7B set up in this video. Technically, the SM7B is a “quiet” mic in terms of self noise, but it requires a lot of mic gain, so you are more likely to hear pre-amp noise than with many condensor mics. The NT1 and LCT 440 Pure are extremely quiet mics in terms of self noise, some of the quietest out there, so a decent pre-amp can make super low noise floor recordings with them.
      I have another video where I test sound and noise floor with the SM7B and three different interfaces, if you are considering that mic and want an idea on the noise floor you can expect.

      The self noise is very similar. I don't believe it is any higher on the NT1 than on the Lewitt 440 Pure. I can check later and let you know.

      You should be able to check with Rode to verify the authenticity of your mic. If it is authentic you might have received a defective mic. I have no loyalty to Rode or any other company. I simply didn't notice the problems you have with your NT1.

      @@bigtb1717 I took mine back to that store and had to fight for a refund lol Yeah mine had a frequency signature equal to that of white noise with a bump at 100hz and sounded like a turbine/washing machine. Just watched your vid on the bee mic i might just play it safe and go with the cheaper option. Thanks for the insight.

      It's part of a book a family member was writing. It's not finished, but that is a short excerpt from it in a part about a train crash/accident.

    Holy god, man. More than half the video talking about the size & position of the pop filter. Just say it once and move on.

      Lol, yeah, I guess I rambled on about it a bit. Sorry about that. Had to talk about something I suppose. Honestly, I really do prefer the compact, convenient package of the Lewitt. Less obtrusive when recording at a tiny desk like I have. It has become my most used microphone, by far. Some time not long after this video I started scripting most of my videos because I have a tendency to ramble.
