  • Another thunderstorm! Lots of lightning by British standards, but strangely enough, not much thunder from where we were. This was just after midnight, so early morning on July 4, 2015. I suppose this video also counts towards my Ambient London series, since it is in fact an environmental sights and sounds video - of pretty poor quality, given the kit I have, of course.
One thing I remember from physics at school is that electricity needs 40,000 volts for a spark to cross just 1cm of air. So these thunderbolts, crossing, what? 300m at least, maybe much more, must be packing more than 1,200,000,000 volts if I have done my maths right!
Now as the video is quite long, I've listed most of the visible thunderbolts below. I've ignored most of the so-called "sheet lightning" (where you don't see the lightning bolts but do see it light up the clouds or the landscape).
Although there is some faint rumbling of thunder throughout much of the video it is barely audible as the storm must have been many miles away most of the time. After an hour, it came closer and there are a few nice bangers, which I have listed separately.
You will see some strange artefacts with some of the lightning flashes, caused no doubt by limitations of my camera - for one, it scans the view 30 times per second (29.97 anyway), so if a flash is shorter than one thirtieth of a second, or happens between scans, you will see a line across the screen where the brighness changes! I've marked a few of these for your amusement...
    Format: h.m.s

    Decent thunderclaps

    1.01.23
1.03.54 (low rumbling for a while after this point)

    1.07.38 a better one
    1.08.10
    1.08.38
1.09.31 heavy rain starts (it was raining somewhat throughout as well)
    1.11.46 a good one
    1.12.21 a good one (lightning 1.12.17)
    1.13.03 a good one (lightning 1.12.57)
    1.14.51
At this point the memory on my camera was nearly full and it began to play up. It wasn't so bad though, as the storm itself subsided within the next few minutes as well, so we didn't miss anything.

I like when Americans comment on a UK storm video, our storms are so much more epic, compared to UK storms.
So 60,000 lightning bolts in one day isn't epic or extreme, I don't tbunk a US supercell produces that amount in it's lifecycle, which us usually 30mins.
    Great video.

We were in Hatfield. We came up from Devon for the Silverstone Grand Prix. I have never seen such frequent lightning! As you say...not much thunder at all. Wish I could have filmed it! :(

archiepops Strange about the lack of thunder. I suppose it was farther away than it looked for most of the time: but plenty was in the general direction of Hatfield! We had some more lighning with little thunder last night as well.
