Q4OS is THE distro for people who want a good oldschool-type "Windows" without using a Microsoft system.
It even has a similar "Install Wizard" for apps as Windows has.

Echoing here. Only thing is it's 32 bit which is a bit limiting. Probably better off surfing on your WIN browsers but it will give you access to the Linux world very easily.

I "used" Q4OS for a while some time back. It had a major issue that didn't show in your VM, and that is that it was SLOOOOW to boot and start. But once it was on the desktop it was really fast.
I installed it in a very old laptop and used one of the windows clone looks to give it to my grandma, apart from the slow start, it was perfect. Did everything she needed, with a pretty interface she knew how to get around and being quick enough so as not to need a new machine. Great little distro, can recommend.

Yeah, I can't judge startup times in a VM, they are almost always slow.

Q4OS is stable and works smoothly and Plasma is the best version. Trinity DE is their iteration of KDE 3.5 and is spot on if you used it in it's day. Trinity is better suited for 32bit and Plasma for 64bit. I have been using it for a few years now and can't fault it as a good version of a Debian distro.

Haven't tried the plasma (ewww) version, but my kids have been using q4os 3 trinity installed on sdxc cards on 13 year old netbooks for a few years and it is indeed snappy. Before trinity we had lubuntu dual booting on the ssd drive with windows 10 and the windows 10 performed slightly better than lubuntu in general and particularly in multimedia usage; but q4os trinity easily outperforms them both in every way and I just never even felt like I needed to install it to the ssd.

Q4OS gives me those sweet 2003 vibes. The startup music, the startup system screen. Looks professional and smooth.
However it is obvious that it is trying hard to look and feel like Windows.

    • @NickDyers
      @NickDyers Год назад +3

      > is trying hard to look and feel like Windows
by design, for its main INTENDED demographic.
more advance/experienced users might straight use Debian anyway.

    • @Doing_Time

depends how you set it up....kde 3 was very gui configurable and also supported transparency before vista came out with aero (and with a whole lot less bloat/gpu load than aero)...you can configure it to look like windows 7 or 10 which didn't exist yet, but without the bloat and bugs of plasma (which is basically a vista clone)...

Q4OS is a very solid Debian based OS. It is not old, but fast, with the Trinity Desktop. It is even more lightweight, than Lxqt or Lxde. Furthermore, it is underrated. Everything works fine, with the same Software any other Distro is offering.

I have quite an old laptop with Windows 10 on it. It runs slow, many times having the HDD 100% issue and RAM is almost full with a lot of tabs open. For objective reasons I have to keep Windows and I can't make a dual boot because of MBR HDD. So Q4OS inside Windows is a great solution for me. I've installed it and it works like a charm. Now I have around 2.5 GB of RAM used while working, instead of 7. I went with Plasma because I like more the feeling of it and the difference in performance is not so big, is uses only 400 MB of RAM more than Trinity. This distribution is so good, I wonder if there are also others that can be installed inside Windows.

  • @jeffreyplum5259

I think Q4os pure is what Sparky Linux calls a minimal GUI version. It boots into a GUI, but may have very little else installed. I believe the Live installation is what Damn Small Linux called frugal installation. Then the distro runs from a clone of the ISO, just at hard drive speed. It may skip most configuration, including user and storage setup. This may unpack onto the user's disk with virtually no user input.. This seems a great testing or virtual installation option.

@@TheLinuxCast It was discontinued many years ago, like 2013. The reason it isn't used anymore is because they had trouble maintaining the code with all the Windows changes, it performed poorly as it was installed on the same NTFS drive along with Windows as an application and it had a lot of various issues that caused it to not work for people. It was never a good solution for a long-term Linux transition and was only useful to demonstrate Linux to people running Windows.

Hi, I am a linux beginner, I have a very old dual core pc with 8 gb of ram, I recently installed Q4OS 4.7 and I am happy with this distro, very stable and fast but I messed up for problems of incorrect installation on the programs, you miss dependencies, repositories etc ... However I'm curious to try windows 11 but in case it doesn't go well I would reinstall a linux distro again ... currently there is a more versatile, efficient and "beginner-proof" distro better than Q4OS? Or would I keep windows 11 and loading a live distro from a usb stick is feasible in terms of performance? Thanks.

depend on how old your dual core is--8gb should run anything--windows 11 is awful, windows 10 will do fine and it runs okay on a 2010ish dual-core atom or amd e-350 in my experience...you won't do better than q4os with trinity on that system...lubuntu is the only truly beginner friendly distro I can think of that would run okay on a slow CPU--Q4OS is a lot more difficult than lubuntu and a lot more stable/secure/feature rich in my opinion, so if you're able to handle Q4OS stick with it--and do yourself a favor and make sure you use the trinity flavor...
mx is very easy for just sit and use it, but I wouldn't run the xfce version of it without at least an i3 or k10 and maybe something a little more for the other versions...
