    This helped. Ordered a 278/204 intake,288/214 exhaust cam. Cam card said it would work with factory pushrods. After setting the lash the cylinders had no compression. Backed off the rocker and boom,. Good compression. Reset the engine to tdc and rechecked the#1 pushrods. Sloppy sloppy. Love and learn not to trust manufacturer s' word....

    I built a 350 (388) and put a smaller cam for the street .550 lift, it used to be a roller motor. My pushrod legnth ended up being .250 shorter than stock. Also with the cam, heads were milled .020 as far as I know because I got them used, and .010 block decked. Standard felpro head gasket. I found a good used set of circle track pushrods on ebay for $29.95, CV brand, chromoly /hardended. Their walls are .110 instead of the standard thinner .080.

    I'm guilty... :( E-cam, GT-40P heads with stock pushrods and roller rockers...oops. sounded like a sewing machine! lol.
    Keep up the great vids man, I always learn something!

      Hey thanks! All hope is not lost, pattern up the rockers onto the valve stem to see where they are making contact, if it is in the center or close with less than a .050 spread you'll be fine!

      Unfortunately, that car is long gone ('89 GT) But, I now have a '95 5.0 car, I learned my lesson on my '89, and will do it correctly now, I may go with a similar budget GT-40P H/C/I combo... live & learn.

      ThunderHead289 we have the same setup with the E303 & stock pushrods on my friends 95 and it runs fine. Must be the hydraulic lifters. Maybe it’s the E303, I’ve been told it’s the biggest cam you can use with stock pushrods

    Im putting a tfs 1 cam in my rebuild with a new TF spring kit on the gt40p heads. From all the research I have done the stock push rods should fit. Most were saying everything under. 550 was usually good to go. Thoughts? This was a junkyard motor that im rebuilding and I have definitely exceeded my budget haha. I will def try and check the length or look for any movement. I know the machine shop is going to put shims in if needed also.

    Hey there, I have a 72 F-100 with a 390 GT, it has the none adjustable roller rockers. Do each push rod have to go back to the same lifter? Or could in do new push rods with old lifters? There is a little wear on some of the push rods and some look to have very little wear.

    211/220 at.050” lift 😅duration in 5.7l pickup on a 112 LSA. Heads flow 275cfm at .500 and 280cfm at .550 on the intake. 213cfm at .500 and 218cfm at .550 on the exhaust. The cam I chose has lift of .511/.517. My gearing is 3.73. Any chance thoughts on performance?

    I know this is off subject but can you use a solid roller cam with hydraulic roller lifters

    • @mrrmsfucker146
      @mrrmsfucker146 3 года назад

      Yes. You can also keep stock heads and, custom install roller lifters too.

  • @danetbra63
    @danetbra63 7 лет назад

    Im sure youve probably had this before, but would you be able to get away with using the existing lifters with a new camshaft? The ones in my 302 now all seem to be in good condition with no nicks that i can feel with a scale on the rollers. for someone on a budget is it best to save up for new parts or will I be okay? Love the videos man! I learn tons

    • @ThunderHead289
      @ThunderHead289  7 лет назад +1

      That's great to hear!!!!
      You will. It damage a roller can by using the old lifters. It really all depends how many miles you want to get out of it. If they are doing well, they will run good now, but someday the internals and springs will wear in the lifters and they will have bleed down issues and what not. It's no telling how long they will last new or old. If properly cared for, if imagine thy would do 200k total. Flat tappet cams are the units that require new lifters as they "wear in" to their lobe so to speak

    The n271 cam that was in the galaxie you think pedestal mount rockers will be ok with that

    • @ThunderHead289
      @ThunderHead289  6 лет назад

      +Matthew Simpson yes, but I would be sure to have rollers due to the lift - with that, pick up some shims from summit for pedestal mounts and an adjustable pushrod to pattern everything up to get the proper shim height. Then once you have a good pattern, you can go ahead and order pushrods 👍

    Hi , I have edelbrock performer rpm "right out the box" heads and there are few problems. One of those is that some of valves are sinked deep in seats and valve stem high differs a lot and rocker arms geometry all over the place. There are not much options for pushrod at length what I need What You can advice in that situation? May be I can make a special fixture to grind accurately ball pushrod end for every valve to achieve proper geometry? I cant grind valve stems for that much because rocker arms will be to close to retainers. Sorry for my poor English.

    • @ThunderHead289
      @ThunderHead289  8 лет назад

      For one call in and complain. Two, if you measure them out and they are within the same range for required pushrod length, then you will be alright, not perfect, but it would be what you have to work with. They come incrementally, so you will likely fall on one pushrod length.

  • @eddieallen8982

    do you work on Chevy's too? I got a stock 350 (early 70's) with 76cc heads and I plan to use 305 58cc 601 cast heads and I was wondering if I need to keep the 350 valve springs with that cam or if the 305 springs will do.

    • @ThunderHead289
      @ThunderHead289  8 лет назад

      All small block engines work on the same principle. The valve springs should be fine as log as your running a stock cam

    • @eddieallen8982

      +ThunderHead289 OK thanks. I wasn't the last one to build the engine but I was told it was stock.

    • @donrutter6765
      @donrutter6765 6 лет назад

      305 heads have more compression but make less power because they flow like crap.Thats the only thing holding a 305 back from making power. Never use them. You can use a 305 shortblock, its all 350 except for bore size, its a trick because you can get them cheap. But when you put good heads on, you put the heads on a bare block and scribe the heads from inside the cylinders, no crank in. You have to unshroud the heads/port them to the block.

    Anyone please answer.....
    I replaced my street bike (sohc)with 10mm lift cam instead of 5mm lift. But the results are poor than the stock. Upgrade big carbs too and increased the compression ratio also.
    please support...

    • @juliusczarbelcap6447
      @juliusczarbelcap6447 4 года назад +1

      It's not just about the lift,you also have to check exact valve timing and duration. Imo,10mm lift from 5mm is a bit overkill. It might be too much for your valve diameter to have any positive gain beyond 7.8mm of lift.

    • @ravikannan9425
      @ravikannan9425 4 года назад +1

      JuliusCzar belcaP thanks for your reply sir, I mistakenly entered as 5mm lift . It’s 5.2lift in lobe and a rocker arm ratio 1:1.5 so valve lift is 7.8 as you said.. can I increase it now to 10mm in valve area.
      Bore x stroke - 70x58
      Inlet valve- 22.5
      Exhaust- 19.5
      Carb- 34mm flat slide
      Pls do support...

    • @juliusczarbelcap6447
      @juliusczarbelcap6447 4 года назад +1

      @@ravikannan9425 what bike are you working on sir? Imo,the short answer is yes,but I can not guarantee that it will be the best valve size for your 223cc build. There are a lot of factors to consider like,cylinder head design and also the bikes intended purpose(drag,circuit or just road bike). Since you are planning on adding 10mm on the valve size, I assume it's 2 valved cylinder so,valve angle should also be considered.
