I do love how when you turn one item on, the rest fall in line. ITs not a feature I use, as I have a harmony remote, but I really love what Sony is up to!
Get yourself a sony 5.1 or 7.1 amp. DTS is a surround sound thing, nothing the tv can do because it is only stereo. Also, I love this tv, but somewhere deep in the settings is something called light sensor. TURN IT OFF! The screen becomes much brighter and I prefer it 10 fold.
Thanks Guy. I just got a Sony HT CT660 soundbar (in fact, I am uploading my unbox and review of it tonight) and it pairs perfectly with this Blu Ray player (and my Sony TV). You will love it!
Before purchasing any electronic gadgets, you should have to take information about that product. This video is showing up to date information about that Sony’s Blue ray player. Thanks for keeping such informative screens.
The interface looks exactly the same with older models. I have a Sony BDV-EF200 3D Bluray home theater which I bought back in 2011 for about 300€ if I'm not mistaken. It's a great bluray and it supports everything. The picture and sound is superb. It supports all sound formats including DTS-HD MA and Dolby True HD. As for the apps.. it has Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Vudu, Sony Unlimited etc. The only bad thing is that the RUclips and BBC iplayer apps aren't working anymore. As far RUclips goes.. it's all due to Google's policy not to support anymore devices that can not play advertisements. To be honest I'm only using it for streaming nowadays (Netflix/Hulu and of course Vudu). I stopped renting blurays long ago and since Vudu has superb streaming quality I prefer renting movies from there and streaming. If they keep these apps alive on these older smart blurays like mine, I can see myself keeping it for a long long time!
I just got one without built in wifi and not 3D but $69 on sale. I love mine, very good picture (2D) and well made have fun with yours with all the extra bells and whistles.
Great video and review of the BDP-S5100. One stop shop Blu-Ray player. This will pair nicely with my Sony Soundbar System. Based on your review, I will order one from Amazon...
Hey Michael, thanks for your comments! I don't know if DTS will come through a usb. However, if it can be recorded using the mpeg codec it should work. Sorry this is not more helpful but good luck :-)
hey jayobi, two weeks ago i bought the Sony kdl50r550a based on your review of that t.v. on sale at best buy $947.00. me and my wife LOVE this t.v!!! Great picture and really good built in speakers. no need for sound bar! but my one problem is that i download all my movies and some of them are DTS audio which this this t.v. does not support. :( my question is can i play my DTS audio movies "via" usb flash drive with this blu-ray player? greatly appreciated!
Do they have any stand alone blu ray players? I want one that focuses strictly on bluray. Don't care for Netflix and what not as I have plenty of other devices with those features.
I bought one and i love it. It also plays my SACD, Its better than my piece of junk SONY DVP-CX995V 400 disk player. That thing broke down on me 5 times.
Hi Amy, You connect to WiFi just as you would on your phone/tablet/computer ... when you turn on the blu-ray player for the first time, it will show you available WiFi connections. Then you simply select your home wifi (and any security codes you may have assigned to your wifi) and it is connected. Of course, it remembers the selected wifi, so every time you turn on the machine it connects. Hope this helps.
It's June 2015 now, and of course as any consumer (which means keep buying) operated business, this Sony's blue ray player sadly ends up being on the bottom of garbage bin destined pile. It has features, what it is supposed to do, it does - play disks ...that's it. Using latest HTC M9 cellphone as a remote substitute, this "disk player" refuses control. It takes, on average, between 15 to 30 seconds just to get red RUclips logo on the screen. It freezes before loading another video ...inside a house with full internet cable connection and strong Wi-Fi signal. Yes, you can watch your favorite Ice Age or Thor movie from the disk, but the strength of hardware interconnection between devices and this "disk player" is now almost nonexistent. And now, because of stopped updates for this device, you have to go and spend another $150, just to get something decent. If you're in the market for "disk players", be prepared to spend between $100 and $250 EVERY YEAR ...lesson learned. Thank you Sony ...not.
Most of these features are worthless if you already have a roku or Apple TV. You can save a few bucks by getting a lower end player since they all look and sound the same
I would agree, however, all of the 3-D spec'ed blu-ray players have wifi & all the apps. So, if you need/want 3-D on your blu-ray player, you get all of it. What is a better way of thinking about it is if you are setting up a system, this player eliminates the need for purchasing a roku or apple TV (saving you some serious cash ~$100). I sold my appleTV (gen 2) on craigslist for $150 ($50 more than I paid) and used that cash to buy this ... plus, it plays 3-D blu-rays (which, of course, my appleTV couldn't).

Great video!! Can I add an external Hard Drive to play my own media, such as MKV, MP4 etc?

I just bought one of these, decent player and I love the streaming.
Great Review! Much more complete than others I have enjoyed seeing.
Thank you very much. PS: AWESOME TV Set!

I believe Sony's lowest model blu ray player is the S1100 ... and it too has the Sony list of apps including netflix, etc.
So can you stream movies from a usb with your player ?
Does this player have streaming ps3 games also as an app?
has this got the multi region upgrade?
that is weird? when you go around your media bar it's smooth but mines is laggs :/
