Young man, you have opened the door to ...in my humble opinion...the greatest guitar played the world has ever produced.
Your reactions to his playing are completely appropriate...confounded, amazed, astounded.
FZ was way beyond interpretation...jazz, rock, classical, folk, all mixed in a blender and played at once in perfection, and much more.
I've listened to Zappa for over 50 years, always amazed at his virtuosity, his composing, his massive output of original music!
43 years 🎉🎃🎃🎃
thumbs up - 44 Yrs for me . Made my high school days reeel high ! :-) sometimes from just the pure joy of it !
46 years and still amazed
I am forever grateful to Eric the art student who played the Freak Out album for me in the spring of 1967. Helped me get through the radio top 40 stuff that contaminated the airwaves everywhere back then.
Frank Zappa puts everybody in their place. Everybody!;
Thats why there was never an over rated guitarist that ever mentioned his name. At least through the years while Frank was out there sweeping up the floor with all the flash in the pan wanna be's,n, actually, for decades,
And just so you know, Frank never had any formal music lessions, he's completely self taught.
His son, Dweezil Zappa, has a phenomenal touring band that plays FZ’s music. YOU HAVE YO SEE THEM, SUPPORT THEM to continue to hear the decades’ long recordings of his father and numerous band alumni.
Jean Luc-Ponty on violin, George Duke on keyboards. Dude, you gotta study up. The number of young musicians he brought onto his band went on to great careers.
How about Stevie Vai and Adrian Belew?
I did hear about Steve Vai being in Frank's band before he made it big with David Lee Roth and Whitesnake and his solo career. I LOVE Steve Vai. He is one of my biggest guitar heroes for sure!
Let's hear it for another great Italian, Warren Cuccurullo Ladies and Gentlemen!
Was going to say the same thing. It is one and only DUKE and PONTY, not just violin and keyboards😎
@@breakup66 I love hear Warren on SUNPYG !!
@@breakup66 and Corrado Rustici!!
Hey kid jump in to the deep end of the pool with Zappa and enjoy!
Good ears - Jazz is a looming influence in Zappa's music, even when he wont admit it haha, and most of the musicians he hired were jazz players.
FZ combined Jazz, classical, r&b, fusion, rock, blues and everything in between
As Frank used to say, "Jazz isn't dead, it just smells funny".
HaHa! Don't try to define Zappa. Zappa was Zappa. One of kind.
All of Frank's live solos are improvised!
The second guitar solo was recorded during the daytime Mike Douglas Show. Frank is using a tiny amp called Pignose, backed up by the TV studio band supporting Mike Douglas.
Zappa was one of the most versatile guitarists ever. Just when you think you've nailed him down or categorized him, he'll do something different that is fresh and unique that causes you to re-evaluate your earlier impressions of him.
"His band is good too" "he's got everything"
Indeed.
Franks, probably the most under-rated guitarist. You either get his music or you don’t. It’s always been that way. But his guitar playing and his sheer virtuosity. He’s one of the best.
I’ve never watched a reaction video before, but when I saw Zappa I had to watch it. Your reaction was completely appropriate. He is in my opinion the greatest guitarists of all time. A recommendation, find Muffin Man on RUclips and watch it. I think it is his best solo. There is one version where Adrian Belew does an intro solo then Frank just goes off. The lyrics can be funny, but the music is amazing. I’m jealous that you have the chance to discover him as someone new. Enjoy!
I remember seeing Adrian Belew before in a video where he was the guitarist in David Bowie's band in a concert from 1978. I think it was filmed for German TV Live in Berlin.
I have often said that Frank Zappa phrases his guitar solos in a very similar fashion to John Coltrane's phrases, so YES ... you are right.
What a treat for your introduction to live Zappa. BTW, that "hammering on" technique I first saw by Stanley Jordan on Johnny Carson's Tonight show, predating Zappa and VH.
COMMENT 1 - "Looks like Einstein" - reminds me, people often wrongly attribute to Einstein the maxim beginning with the words "Information is not knowledge..." - it originates in a Zappa lyric, no joke.
The buzzword is 'Watermelon in Easter Hay'.....amazing noises from guitar
The last solo is from 91, and is not with his band, he had stopped playing guitar in 88 and was diagnosed with cancer in 90, in 91 he appeared at 2 concerts as a guest in Czechoslovakia, and this is one of them, not bad for not playing for 3 years
And also amazing that he had just met these other musicians the day before this performance
Great reaction. Now, you said you would like to react to some of the songs from his records. Watermelon in Easter Hay is already mentioned. I'd also recommend Inca Roads (One Size Fits All), Muffin Man (Bongo Fury) and Sleep Dirt (Sleep Dirt). You've struck gold here, man!
Once you go down the Frank rabbit hole, as a guitar player you'll soon find the Lydian mode creeping into every where you can fit it. If you dig this stuff cHeck out br1tag's channel, he's hours of pure Zappa guitar goodness. The tone of the second clip is just straight into litte pignose with the MIke Douglas band backing him up.
Hi,

You've got more than 200 albums worth of music by Frank to listen to. The first Frank Zappa and the Mothers concert I went to was in 1968. He was, is and always will be the best.
That would have been around the time of "Billy The Mountain" (Just Another Band From L.A. album)?
'Holiday in Berlin (Full Blown),' 'Peaches en Regalia,' 'Willie the Pimp,' 'Blessed Relief,' 'Inca Roads,' 'Son of Orange County,' 'Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?,' 'Sofa no. 2,' 'Transylvania Boogie,' 'Packard Goose,' Watermelon in Easter Hay,' and I could go on and on and on...
Edie learned tapping from watching Steve Hackett lead guitarist for Genesis from 71-77
Legend !
Saw Frank a couple of times. Incredible musician. Wrote every note for every instrument played. Crazy in his perfectionism.
Very cool reaction and thoughts on FZ music. I have most of his work. Never tire of it. Currently playing Occams Razor.
The best song from Frank is Incaroads! See the live performance!! Great solo too. And special animation from him.
he took several genres threw em in a blender and made something tasty from it as only he could. air sculpture master....one of the most unique people ever.
OMG can we just admire how beautiful that SG is 6:50
Free flow from his brain thru his guitar? A genius on many levels
The solos are even better in context of the songs. Check out Dweezil playing "Zomby Wolf" with Steve Vai. AS For Frank it is literally all good, but try "Watermelon in Easter Hay"
TONS of Zappa guitar compellation videos on the Internet. Fans have pulled them from songs and put them into "guitar solos only" compellations, so there's plenty to watch. Zappa also has put out some official Zappa guitar albums, many with the title Shut Up 'n' Play Yer Guitar. If you're interested, Zappa has released 113 albums of such variety and writing/playing skill it will blow your mind. Again, most can be found on the Internet. Enjoy.
FYI, I think that Frank rarely, if ever, used a "fuzzbox" or "overdrive pedal" (athough he did use other effects such as wah-wahs, digital delays, and/or voltage-controlled filters). Rather, he had his amplification turned up to the point where he was riding the razor's edge of feedback distortion and controlling it masterfully. The Mike Douglas show solo was a good example of that; as another commenter said, he was playing through a (relatively tiny) "pignose" amp that was running pretty much wide open all of the time.
Keep digging! Frank was extremely prolific and amazing.
"Occam's Razor" is also the name of a very fine 9 minute 11 second guitar solo by Mr. Zappa. There are actually three guitarists on this track: Zappa, Warren Cuccurullo and Denny Walley.
I like your reaction & it is so interessed. I see that you were impressed of that genius composer & guitarist
@MrGamingGuitarist
Do some more Zappa...you won't be disappointed...there are plenty of his treasures lying out on RUclips...this man is out of step of reality...maestro...genius par excellence! 🙏
yes, Frank used a Pignose portable amp to overdrive his system giving that looney fuzz effect. his blues solos on the "roxy" album are some of the best ever
I agree with the earlier comments. If you really want to hear the best of Frank's solos, then you MUST check out "Watermelon in Easter Hay", the solo from "Zomby Woof" (live, volume one of You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore), or the solo from "Son of Mr. Green Genes" from the Hot Rats album. Often imitated, never duplicated (with a possible exception, Dweezil in his awesome tribute band, Zappa Plays Zappa). Frank was the best there was, the best there is and the best there ever will be. There is so much content on RUclips alone and much more out there on the web. He released 62 album while he was alive and over 50 albums have been released since his untimely demise. Musicians today have a debt to him that can never be repaid! FZ forever!
My first encounter with Zappa was when my Jazz band instructor handed out the charts for Chunga’s Revenge. This was back in 1974. If you only want to hear guitar solos then listen to his series of albums starting with Shut Up and Play Your Guitar. But the man was a composer and if you go beyond the guitar there’s a lot more to enjoy.
Great observation of frank .. unorthodox ..I saw him in 1973 it was like he would go into a trance .. and took the audience with him ..I can still hear that concert if i concentrate 50 years later ..😁 it would be better if you listen to the other soloists in his band, such as Jean Luc ponty ..
Saw him in 73 too. Never heard anything like it before or since.
I think he locks on to someone in the audience who is grooving and he feeds off the visual stimulation and trances out.
Is not how he plays. Its what he plays. Music from heaven!
You may want to try two versions of "Inca Roads" to see that coordination umong the band members was unparalled during the written sections but frank always left time for grove section to let go with whatever frank felt like inventing on that night. The album version has one of my favorite grooves the bass and franks guitar making something you never could have imagined and the live version is very good also.
Frank, and Steve Hackett did the tapping thing years before the VH album was released.
In case you decide to do more Zappa guitar reaction videos, check: Black Napkins, Watermelon in Easter Hay, St Etienne, Chunga’s Revenge (Paris 1980), Bamboozled By Love (Barcelona 1988), Montana (Whipping Floss) (from the Helsinki concert), Sexual Harassment In the Workplace. For starters.
Frank Zappa .
Frankus Goodus Zappus!!!!🌟
Second song is one of his signature songs played with a talk show orchestra with his guitar going through an original Pignose amplifier with the amp providing the overdrive... 2 years before Van Halen 1 in 1976...
Recommended compositions: Peaches En Regalia, It Must Be A Camel, Uncle Meat, Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue, Calvin and His Next Two Hitchhikers, Zomby Woof, Montana, The Black Page, Inca Roads, Sofa, Andy, RDNZL, Drowning Witch, Moggio, Alien Orifice. Guitar tunes: Willie The Pimp, Chunga's Revenge, Trannsylvania Boogie, Muffin Man, Black Napkins, Zoot Allures, Watermelon In Easter Hay, The Deathless Horsie, Mammy Anthem, Filthy Habits, Pink Napkins, and the three Shut Up N Play Yer Guitar title tracks.
the tapping with a pick was shown to FZ by drummer Jim Gordon around '73
If you can turn one young person onto Frank your a hero
‘Sleep Dirt’ off of the Sleep Dirt album. ‘Black Napkins’ and ‘The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution’ , same album. {-
COMMENT 2 -
(1). He wouldn't have liked the term but "jazz rock fusion" is absolutely part of what Frank was about.
(2). Other guitarists who were tapping (at speed) before Van Halen include John McLaughlin, Neal Schon (e.g in his Santana days) and Al DiMeola - and, even before Hackett, Robert Fripp did it ("but never properly developed the idea"), e.g the Plumpton '69 tapes
(3). That televised gig from Stockholm 1973 is one of the top-priority must-sees (Two reasons - it's 72 mins with no fat, no fooling around, and the band, well, Jean-Luc Ponty, Ruth Underwood and those horns)
(4). I personally wouldn't have included that Chungas Revenge solo (or anything from the first 1980 tour: besides the other shortcomings of that era, what the solos emphasize is that that drummer wasn't up to scratch). Nor would I have included a 1991 solo in a tight space like this.
(5). Picked at random, two more must-hear Zappa guitar jams: the track Five Five Five (short but intense, named for its time-signature), and the track Sleep Dirt (because, yes, even Frank could be poignant and touching on guitar)
Don't forget George Duke on keys.
And yes he was a huge influence on Phish and jambands in general
Only Frank! His music ask you questions. Complicated stuff
I too get a free form jazz feel or maybe free form fusion.
JC, man! Can we just revel in how tight his amps are at volume in driving that simple switch to the treble pickup at 22:02. Control on the edge.
And chances are these solos were all improve. Saw him 5 times in one week. Although they played the same song, (Montana) Franks solos were all different. Amazing. And the person who invented the fuzz bass was Zappa.
Your reaction was one of the better ones. Most others are BS, you seemed very real about it.
Peaches Jam part two.
Check it out .
Frank Zappa was definitely a great guitarist and has his Unique Style. I hope you do the same thing with Stevie Ray Vaughan on some of his live performances. Jimmy Page play the guitar solo with a violin bow. And you want to listen to some good guitar playing grab the album by Al Di Meola called Elegant gypsy. He'd get sound out of his electric and acoustic guitars that will blow your mind
He had a Chungasm.
Now would be a good time for anyone who wants views on their Zappa reaction videos. Almost no new videos posted in that category in the last week.

As a 50-year + Frank Zappa fan(I'm 64) I will answer your question about the tapping on the guitar!!! Where do you think Eddie Van Halen learned how to do that!?? Answer? Frank Zappa of course!! Frank Zappa is also the one who discovered Alice Cooper!! Or at least gave him his first shot at a recording and a record!!
It took me ten years for the penny to really drop on his playing..I loved much of what I was listening to but I DID NOT GET IT..then YOU UNDERSTAND HOW HE ATTACKS WITH HIS PICKING HAND.
He was self taught on guitar.
Originally a composer, drummer and percussionist. That's why
his style and technique are so
unorthodox
Dude, Zappa was somrthing greater then Rock n Roll. He is one of the finest casical composers of the late 20th century. London Symphoy: Zappa. check it out!
Frank played the same "Butterscotch Strat" for the last 10 years of his life... Custom electronics with the Floyd Rose Tremolo...
It was a 🎸Stratocaster with a whammy bar🎼🎶🎵🎶🎵 we can jam In Joe's garage.
Digging that Rockets hat!
React to "the ocean is the ultimate solution" it's one of my favorite morning songs
If so, let's make sure he gets the full-length version (not the Lather edit)
@@Grithron2 I thought there is one version only of that song sleep dirt one
Apparently, Zappa introduced Jimi Hendrix to the wah pedal.
A good song to start with is Inca Roads from the One Size Fits All album
hE IS NOT DOING cARLOS SANTANA 1'S 2'S 4'S AND 8'S AND 16'S...HE IS WORKING ODD NUMBERS INTO A MEASURE or beat....so 3's 5's 7's9's ect..and his tonal control is unique..commanding...he attacks like a drummer sometimes...like i said like 5 stroke rolls and 7 stroke rolls ect....he was the first to record fuzztone in mid 60's...he gave Hendrix his first wah wah pedal.
Recommend .... black napkins from zoot alures . Bamboozled by love from you can't do that on stage anymore volume 3. First 5 song's from Apostrophe
Max Webster (KimMitchell) sounds so much like Zappa too
Oh brother - I've been listening to Zappa for 40 years and the most in the last 10. Start at overnight sensation and work from there. 100 albums are in front of you - most live and all 0n youtube. You wont like it all but try to keep a open mind. Studio tan is a masterpiece .
The best band you never heard
wellcome in the univerce
I should have added for something sweet sleep dirt
I`m a shitty guitar-player...hahaha---but Frank is top of the top,with a few more guitar-gods
Yes it was before VH
Check out Transylvania boogie
Ha-Ha-Ha.…. Ship Ahoy!!!
That looks like a Telefunken U47
😉
we are all shitty guitar players compared to frank, don't beat yourself up about it.
His guitars (strings very close to the bridge), strings (very thin ones), amp set up (just on the edge of feeding back), was all set up to allow him to produce sound in as many ways as possible with minimal effort. He had a very precise and delicate touch, so every nuance mattered.
Steve Vai made transcriptions of many of his most famous guitar solos and Zappa published it as a book. Those scores are scary complex, but again most of it was improvised.
If were not for those guitar players like Hendrix, Di Meola, and Holdsworth (maybe a few more), I would claim FZ is the best guitar player (though it's not Olympic games, you know). But absolutely soberly I can tell that he is one of the best . You can pick up BIG LOT of Zappa solos that can prove my words... Actually where is The Muffin Man, I expected it here, Treacherous Cretins etc.
Frank uses a Pignose sometimes
Arf!
Add a public comment.
Heavy take
"They have a violin player." Dude? Ponty
That plaid blazer/sports jacket is part of the ugliest outfits ever. The pants were non matching plaid bell bottoms. That's the '73 Helsinki show, Movin' to Montana...wait! There's a violin? That's Jean Luc Ponty.
