When you believe in your own work, the sting of rejection isn’t as potent or long lasting.

There is nothing wrong with being rejected. It just means that the right group of people haven't come yet. Believe in yourself and keep going. I am learning to take rejection that its okay not to sell everything in one day that it may take time to sell anything. Just hope that everything works out in the end. There is always donations and charity giving when a piece doesn't work out well to be sold.

I haven't been rejected as often as I will be. But I also don't choose to set myself up for rejection. If I know my art isn't up to par for a particular show, I don't enter... That doesn't mean I will never enter, just that it's not my time yet.
But I also think of my art and my strategy this way: my art is gold. It may be unrefined gold, but it's gold. It's molten gold running in a stream, seeking it's own level, and leaving beautiful goodness as it flows. It's art for the common human, so if the snotty humans reject it, that's perfect. My goal is connection and inspiration, not fame. If I attempt to 'flow' over an obstruction and am rejected, no big deal...I just flow around, find my own way and flow on.

@@solarydays I'm not exactly sure how you mean that, but I agree. Ego is one thing. Believing in your art is another.

I used to show my horse. Some days we would not even get looked at even though he was spectacular and performed perfectly. Other days he was naughty and we took home best of show, having won all our classes. I finally figured out that none of it made sense so I just went for fun and to enjoy it if I won and if I didn’t. Art shows are like that too. I’m disappointed that many groups won’t even let you play but that’s cliques for you. Plein air Events are largely designed to be galleries for a small group of professional artists. I paint for myself and to delight in what I’m painting. I do sell my work and am always glad when people buy my work and are happy with it.

In hindsight, 100% of the shows and galleries I have been rejected from have been places or situations I didn't want anything to do with. The Universe has a sneaky way of letting you know who and where are NOT your crowd or your audience. I learned to listen to that. But, yeah, it is a callous you gotta build up. Great advice, you two!

I was just taking a beautiful walk with my children and impulsively dropped in on one of my consignment art shops.... there were $0 in my envelope and they handed back a big bag of paintings for me to take home. The bag was really heavy.... and I felt rejected. It was a long walk back to the car. And I thought about this video and came back here to watch it a 2nd time.
Thanks for all you do. I'm having a better evening because you exist!

When my family and I moved to VA from Ohio, (YANKEE!) I was accepted into a group show where 4 of my banners were showing. It was about an hour drive when I discovered I had the wrong time. We got there at the tail end. A rich lady liked my banners but chided me for being late and being Yankee. I apologized and explained I remembered the wrong time. Said she would’ve bought my banners, but her perceived superiority over me changed her mind. I thought I was courageous for staying once I knew the mistake I had made. Seeing her superior attitude, I wouldn’t have wanted to sell to her anyway. Ended up selling to a church when we moved to MO. I didn’t even ask to sell them; just showed my photos. The priest even asked how much and told me I wasn’t asking enough! I cried when he offered to buy them for more. ♥️

Rejection is inevitable, but my (maybe counter-intuitive) advise that always seems to help is--uplift others. When you offer assistance or help someone else out of any kind of jam or problem it's like the moment that you focus outside your own work and offer solutions to someone else it can unlock powerful initiatives in yourself!

Ahh rejection.. If you're not getting rejected you're not trying hard enough, or so the saying goes. I got plenty of rejections and often take a break from "open calls" and just do my own thing, DIY exhibs or studio time or street art / craft, whatever. Keep putting ourselves out there is the main thing yes indeed. Nevermind the art cliques - make your own gang. Oh yeah it exists - Rogue Artists! 😎🤟❤️💯🎨

I emailed a few small personal galleries one year because I wanted to get myself out there, some didn't reply at all, some said they don't display my type of art, one said I need to work on my art more and get more established, 2 said they have enough artists, 2 said they only display cultural art 🤷🏼‍♀️. So not one single personal gallery accepted me 😆. I went to two businesses who I notice had local art hanging on the walls for sale and they both said they are not looking for more art at the moment while looking at me weird and confused 🤔. I was feeling pretty down, I finally entered two of my paintings into the local art guilds annual juried show. One painting got in and I even received a ribbon and a cheque for $150 cash prize 😲. Several months later I received an email from city hall/library. They have a large gallery space. The curator saw my paintings either on social media or at the juried show. Anyways, she said she loved my art and asked me to apply to have a solo exhibit for a month in their gallery space. But I needed to write an artist statement and submit at least 20-30 paintings on a DVD for them to review and they will decide if I will be accepted. At the time I was very excited but very nervous and totally unprepared. I literally only had 10 paintings in my possession. No where near enough to fill that huge space. I regretfully emailed her back and said that I would love to do that in the future. It just goes to show though, even if you get rejected just keep trying because you never know what kind of opportunities are around the corner. I am going to build up my inventory of paintings and I'm definitely going to apply for a solo show at city hall after Covid. They even throw a reception for me on opening night. Crazy cool 😆

I always LOVES ME SOME MONDAY MOTIVATIONAL MADNESS! I love your face, Rafi and Klee's eyebrows simply exist within the time dilation of a differential Universal quantum fluxation. There is one dimension where she actually has very bushy Groucho Marx eyebrows. In that particular Universe, she is ruling the planet as its Queen. Although I cannot pronounce her name in our current dimension, because words are actually more like sound symbols there, it's pronounced a bit like, 'Kleegammonovovichnicoff Musselhanngerganger' - She rules the entire planet with just a flicker of her eyebrows. People fear her eyebrows and so should we. 👾

The way I approach my art is if I get rejected, I improve myself. That's the way I look at Instagram for example. If I don't get as many "likes" as I wanted then I'll try harder and in the process I improve my art
I don't take things personally. Maybe people see something wrong that I don't see at the moment. I look at old drawings I did 1-2 years ago and I can see how much I've improved. So I keep moving forward.

Circumstances vary but depending on the scene, sometimes galleries are booked. My friend runs a gallery downtown in Columbus and she is booked a year out. Our scene though is over run with artists from five college art programs that crank them out so it’s not surprising. There are other ways to get your art seen in Columbus but I get it’s not always the case in smaller towns. She had one guy fully melt down on her because he got rejected because he thought he could show his work there in a couple of months. There is a way to handle rejection but that wasn’t it.

If you don't Ask, you'll never know... It's just part of the journey as an artist. There was a gallery once that I really felt my work was a great fit for in Napa (my vineyard themed chandeliers)...and I submitted, didn't hear anything...but then they were out of business within one year. So sometimes the rejection part isn't you, it's the bigger circumstance...as obviously that gallery was on it's way out...adding new artists wasn't super high on their list. It's just all part of it!
Glad to see a video from you this cheery Monday morning...my two favorite Penn artists!!! It's going to be a great day in the studio!!! Thank you for the Monday morning lift-up!! Cheers!

One other thing to consider is that while your work is good, it may not fit in. If you paint western realism, dont go to a gallery that leans to modern abstract. An extreme, but that would make a difference.

  • @kerravonsen2810
    @kerravonsen2810 2 года назад

Quite often it is the case that a rejection just means that the two parties are not a good fit. It doesn't mean that your art is "not art" or "bad art", just that it isn't *their* art. But it can be hard to step back, especially when a newbie, because even though it isn't personal, it *feels* personal; that the rejection of the art is a rejection of oneself.

  • @TartantazCreates

I have been rejected so many times not just with my art but throughout my life. I am human and of course it stings, but I remind myself it is a reflection on them not on me. I pick myself up dust myself off and start over again. Right now I am not even painting because I have not been in the mood to. I have been taking a break from painting to refill my creative well. I have been knitting and sewing and even bought a spinning wheel to spin my own yarn. I realised whilst I do enjoy painting and will always enjoy painting, it is not my nature to stick to one creative activity. So I am now embracing my eclectic nature. I am rejecting being what everyone expects of me lol T x

Dream would be to have a gallery to say we need this type of art, and I just produce it and send it over , they market, sell and ask for more. Leaving me open to create. Or have RUclips make enough for that to happen, so ads pay not customers etc but it’s so so awesome when people buy the art to experience it :)

You are so right - if you go to them, you validate them and what they are doing as much as they validate you. I'm of the mind that I'd rather validate myself by focusing on what I can control than to allow someone else to take the reigns, so to speak, of my artist journey. Galleries have their place, but my place is doing what I love, engaging with people who share that same love, and exploring how I want my artistic world to look.

After the both of us having been in bed with the plague, WE REJECT THE PLAGUE! It however, will not reject us...
Great seeing you today, and we enjoyed pausing the video to discuss varying points...
Naomi says: "I just thought of the most annoying rejection I ever got. So my mom used to know an annoying 'salesman' and he was always trying to force me (a little kid at the time) to 'sell' and others to 'buy', which usually led to a lot of uncomfortable interactions with people. And, of course, no one actually ever spent any money. Anyways, he comes running up to us one day and he's like "the local political party wants you to design a poster for them!!"
Long story short, I spent months working on a poster, even getting praised by the candidate in question, only to get my work tossed in the trashcan. Turns out they never wanted my work, they just wanted *him* to leave them alone 🤦"
Wendy: got rejected by the physical therapy department due to COVID, so uh... No pt for me. 😂😭 But that's ok, I'm just going to keep on keeping on.

I was ghosted too Klee, I didn’t know the name for what they did to me, but my experience was with an art supply manufacturer who loved my designs and was going to use them for new product launch, I sent the designs, they made their selection, and then, nothing. I left it 2 weeks, emailed again, nothing, no reply, no explanation, nothing, I kept emailing because I was so baffled 😕 and to this day, I still don’t know other than they dropped the project because the product line never happened (I was watching out for new line)
I understand projects can fail but I truly believe in manners. Politeness costs nothing and emails do not take 5 minutes to say I’m sorry but the project was dropped.
So I’m still disappointed with them and it kinda put me off their brand. This happened in around 2012.

Recently I entered an art competition. The entry fee was Aus $30 per work but the prize was AUS $15,000 so worth the outlay. Artists spend a lot of time and energy creating their work and that is combined with soul searching, self doubt, arguing the pros and cons of putting one's work out there and feeling vulnerable before "biting the bullet" and entering a place fraught with dangers. I didn't get short listed. OK I can live with that but here's the rub. The competition organisers did not send any re3cognition of either my entry nor their rejection but kept the entry fee. I can get past that, despite it being bad manners, however it took several months to advertise and show the winning entry. My work is "figurative surrealism". The winning entry was a portrait of a woman and her dog. I now know it was a waste of my time and money entering a competition, for obvious reasons. The winning entry was a nice portrait, technically well executed, and I have no quarrel with that. The icing on this particular cake was the comment, "And the winner is one of our favourite artists ----." And that may well be one of the criteria to success!

Love the video! My writing has been rejected more than I can count before I was finally published, my art work and my jewelry the same. I used to try museums more for my art and jewelry in my earlier years, but got rejected because I wasn't a "known" artist, so I put my stuff in smaller art shows open to the general public and started getting "artist street cred". Then someone from a museum approached me to display and sell my stuff. After the first month they wanted me to drop my prices by half when I asked if they wanted a restock on sold pieces. I told them I would not drop my prices by half, but we could negotiate. I got ghosted from then on. I have been ghosted by websites, private stores, museums and art shows. Maybe they have a clique that doesn't like me, maybe my art doesn't fit the esthetic they are looking for, maybe they filled the show before I could get back to their inquiry? In any case, it wasn't right for them and they weren't right for me. I just more on and try again. Thanks again for the great videos, you keep us all informed and inspired.

She sent questions, I answered them, and then she ghosted me. I sent another email asking if she got the answers. She said yes and then never contacted me again. I don't think I said anything to deserve that, but I guess I can add that to my rejection tally! Also I tried to donate a piece to a fundraiser for endangered animals. It was a panda painting. Ha ha, once I got hired had an in house interview, then I was to call in for hours I was to start. No one called back, I called over and over. Finally, I got someone with some kind of authority on the phone. They said the woman who hired me, had a heart attack and died the very day she hired me. Therefore, if I was hired, it was off. Good bye. That put my feelings of rejection into a tail spin. It wasn't me, but it was surely fate. Art rejection? I probably have to say not that many have seen my art, but those who have preferred my landscapes that are more realistic, my preference is wild colored landscapes abstracts and also no object abstractions, I also like making these very silly big headed people. So, I suppose I'm still just doing whatever, and occasionally someone will buy one, or order something. I've been very lazy this January as far as painting so I have to tip the scales and get more motivation. I think it's the cold that keeps me just hovering and napping so much. What to do?

Sometimes it seems as tho some of these "arbiters of art" deliberately try to mind fuq as a way to undermine potential competition... those places who reach out to you and then ghost you Klee?...that's emotional psych abuse in my opinion
So glad neither of you gave up & created our paths that are integrious & aligned to your personal truth as risks and humans
    Thank you for this video

I talked briefly about this philosophy of what makes art , ART within my latest video, about does likeness make a portrait good? And when people ask “how do I become a better artist” they mostly mean “how do I paint , draw, create art like that person” there are ways to improve our own voice of the art. I would spot a rafi art from mile off, it’s your unique voice, the colours used etc I would much rather have brush strokes and unique way of showing that subject; than a photorealistic carbon copy . Both should be ok, nothing wrong with photorealism but lately ira come round full circle as art not being art unless it looks exactly like the subject matter. If people never saw my references they’d have no idea it’s nothing like how I’ve painted it 😅 but I love my art and I create a whole new human . Commissions are a bit different approach , usually people want it to look like the subject 😅
So interesting conversation towards end about what makes art art :) all art is art , it’s the artists expression /impression of the world and their inner world

I am mostly accepted to galleries. But I am tired of paying for space. I'm only in one now and it's fabulous but.....I am not selling. I love my work! But, I don't know how to sell it. I need to watch you more.

I am a paid musician and artist and have felt extremely discouraged due to rejection this week. I have to remind myself the reason I do what I do. I do not need others approval to do what I do. If i were to stop today, how would that affect me? I would be depressed because I wouldn't be creating. It is who I am. Hoping I will stop falling into the trap of having others approval.

A human ghosted me concerning a commission and then later contacted me to possibly do another one, seemingly forgetting that they had been a big ghostly poop. My inner a-hole wants to confront them but my people pleaser wants to play nice. Any advice? My ship is leaning towards being a stealth a-hole but maybe that is too passive aggressive…🤷🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️⚡️
