  • With almost three decades worth of acting experience, actor, comedian, singer, screenwriter, and producer John C. Reilly ("Step Brothers," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "The Sisters Brothers") has gathered up plenty of wise words for up-and-coming actors of all ages.
Here, John joined us for a Backstage Live interview, where he shared his best advice for how actors can approach rejection and why they should not take it personally... regardless of how difficult that might be.

I just got rejected from being cast in the musical Chicago at my high school, and seeing this, an actor that played one of the lead roles in the movie Chicago, made me feel like I wasn’t rejected from the musical itself, and that I just didn’t bring the right energy that they needed. This made me feel a little bit better and that it isn’t personal, but even then it might take me a while to recover from this. Thank you John. C. Reilly, I won’t give up yet.

Don't ever give up! I just saw a video on youtube that inspired me after I was also rejected for an acting role. I want you to watch it and hopefully it inspires you as well. The video on youtube is: Jason Alexander discusses advice for aspiring actors

I wish somebody had told me this when I was much younger. I kept not getting casted in things and I gave up because I didn’t think I was good enough.

Leanna Mation awwww... don’t give up! One trick make sure you find the right casting type you seem to have. Ask your friends what actor you remind them of... then look at what sort of movies this actor does and that might be your casting type. Something else that helps search for books and documentation about auditioning!! This helps too!

How bizzare I thought this was just simple common sense!!?! This is how I see everything in life.... Basically it's not that "you" are "wrong" or not right for the part... It is that THE PART isn't right for YOU . (Or job or partner or whatever it may be)

It’s hard not to take it personal after 5 years of giving it your best and not booking a single job.
