A couple of months I traded in my very loved Honda S2000 to a 2007 V8 Vantage manual with less than 40k. Its Ghillies green exterior on Bitter Chocolate interior was what finally made me byte the bullet. It never fails to make me feel like a child, everytime I enter it and turn it on. Damn, just looking at it! Thanks James for your input when I was still considering other options! No regrets :)

The only thing I wish this came with and I agree is a nonessential gimmick is to have a ECU crystal key. Anyone has done a conversion from the early Volvo Fobs?
This is a great and insightful series. Everyone here has an affordable dream car I'm sure. I also love that in most of these when an interesting car drives past, we get a quick look front and back from it. Shows the detail and love that goes into making this channel. Cheers!
Owned mine for 7 years and in that time the only thing that failed was a £15 washer fluid pump. Parts and service kits can be sourced for very little money.
Nice! Curious to know the age and condition of the car when you bought it, cheers. Always nice to hear about a well-taken care of car taking care of its owners.
I know a guy at work that had one with ~30k miles on the clock. Took it off the road because he was sick the thousands of pounds he would spend on servicing (at the dealership in Pangbourne). I can remember I bill of over 2k for a front light cluster

Thats wad awesome, my wife always gets a tear in her eye when that comes on Dave. Car drives like it wants to headbutt the horizon. Customers have swapped them for v8 as too hard-core and needs constant attention when driving. Its the one I dream of owning.
I love these so much, used to see one each morning on the road going to college in Ireland, the guy appeared to be driving it to work every day, what a cool car to be daily driving. Great video.
lovely classy car, even after these years, another great video ! having lost my mum and dad in the last five years and just hit 50 im going to treat myself, these are on my shortlist.
I loved mine for 4 years, upgraded to the 12s but the 4.3 V8 is awesome and with the factory aston after market sports exhaust was a treat as well. You may have to rev them a little to get the best out of them but listen to that sound why would you not want to.
Two words, and I haven’t even finished watching it yet, ‘pure class’. My dream was always to have a sweeping gravel driveway to a modest Georgian country house and an Aston Martin. And this is the one. Right exterior, colour, tasteful interior and a V8, ‘just enough’, what’s not to like. Absolute bargain!👍. Superb YT channel Mr Emm. I wish you every success. Well deserved.👍
So exciting to hear these Aston’s being thrashed on the back roads. I’m currently in a new Panamera , but can’t wait for the PCP to finish so I can get something like this. What a motor! Great stuff as usual James.
Excellent promotion for this super Aston Martin, a few years ago I was looking at a DB7 for the same price, now I realise I could (if needed) come up the ladder a long way for similar bucks! Thanks for these great promo's so very entertaining
Rik Wes you only live once, want a Porsche, go own a Porsche - want an Aston, buy an Aston, ownership comes with responsibilities for any car.. plenty of specialists out there
I've watched and read that the only obstacle of owning an aged Aston Martin is that repairs and replacement parts become expensive but I always believe that if you're a driver who takes care and maintain any car you shouldn't really run into problems.
3:00 the catch is simply what you referred to at the beginning- the "thick folder" of service history and maintenance. Might cost you 'only' £25k to buy but this will still have repair costs of a +- £100k car when things go wrong.
A fantastic choice! These are in the same price bracket as the Continental GT, and I'd love to see an honest review on one of those, Jay! Another car I'd love to see you critique would be the first generation XKR, pre-2004, with either the 4.0 or 4.2 Supercharged V8! :))
Really happy you reviewed this Jay. I’m Currently driving an M2 but on my list of future cars are this (ideally a 2nd gen/430bhp) as well as a Cayman GTS and e92 M3. The badge, looks and sounds of the Vantage can’t be beaten for the price IMO. Sure you don’t have the tactility of the Cayman (981) but this one ticks more boxes 👍🏾
I was the second owner of a 2007 V8 Vantage that I bought in 2014, black/black with anthracite wheels & grille. Sadly I had to sell it after 2 years but it was a great car. I didn't lose much money on it, though servicing and consumables are obviously pretty pricey! The general public seem to love Astons and I never had anything but positive remarks. I'd have another but would have to be able to keep my current 996 too - the Vantage feels like a much bigger/chunkier car.
2010 Jaguar XKR 5.0L V8 supercharged, some of the early 2008-2009 years are going for less than 18k, proper head turner and reasonably reliable (speaking as an owner of over 4 years, one of the first from late 2008 with 85,000km).
Great video. I have owned my Vantage over 7 years now and is exactly the same one looks wise as the one in your video. The clutch thing is a myth I haven’t changed mine to the double plate nor will I do unless it starts to go wrong. I like the feel of the heavier pedal and the clutch change on the single plate. I service mine annually and regularly drive it and the only thing I could comment about on the earlier models is it will throw up some strange faults on the dashboard from time to time. Other than that I have changed the gas struts on the doors and boot lid but that’s all
I'd make the Aston even cheaper by selling that number plate. An important factor with affordable dream cars is what specialists are reasonably convenient to where you live because he's right, you need to avoid main dealers.
Brilliant Review! I bought my 2006 4.3 V 8 Vantage with just 19k miles on the clock for £29k in 2019.It now has had just 22k miles on the clock and I could sell it tomorrow for £36k.Since this review and the shortage of new cars, quality used cars such as Aston Martins have gone through the roof! Having said that who would want to sell an Aston V8 Vantage that is such a pleasure to own and drive!
We had a prototype for a weekend and had to put 1k miles on it so we went to Scotland for the weekend. An experience ill never forget and now I can afford one and we get discount on parts and labour.
I have to admit, that is spectacular value for money... with a chance of it becoming a future classic and going up in price. Great video - did miss the intro though :D
Another great V8V review James Great cars, I love mine. Not that expensive to run - little more than my 996 4 S was. Tell your friend to get a Bamford Rose clutch and flywheel - better than the AMR one I have and transforms the car Can’t beat the drama - and other road users let you out at junctions - never found that in the Porsche!
My 'affordable' dream car was a B7 RS4. In 2010 I bit the bullet and bought one. I kept it for 8 years and loved every single second in it. What . A. Machine. I'd always wanted to scratch an M3 itch though and replaced the RS4 with an E92. I stretched the budget as far as I could and bought a very highly specced July 2013 car, must've been one of the last ones made. Now, just over a year later, I say again - what a machine.
It’s a gorgeous car and they sound so amazing out of the box. I considered one before buying my Lexus ISF (I value reliability) I was quite happy a few years later when one tried to show me its heels, it sounded phenomenal on full chat as I passed it in my ISF.
Was in the same position lately, looking for ISF or V8. Unfortunately both are so rare down here, a 4.7 manual V8 vantage came around and it was too good to turn down.
I loved my V8 Vantage. Ran it for a few years and 38k miles. A few minor electrical probs and the main dealers were pretty shocking, otherwise a great car.
@@nevill2947 not much really. Less than £1k a year. One year I had new brake pads. Otherwise just a service at specialist's. It needed new tyres when I sold it.
Hit the nails all square on the head and articulated ideas I couldn't formulate quite as effectively. The feeling whenever I utter "I'm taking the Aston..." never gets old. If you're going to cane your car, buy a Boxster/Cayman for those runs.
JM, it's interesting that the 997 was the car I cross-shopped before buying the 4.3 V8 Vantage! Yes, the Porsche is immediately easier to drive, lighter steering, braking, and clutching, easier to shift as well. It's also a lot harsher over broken pavement and due to stern damping, quite a bit louder. It was also roughly ten grand less expensive in US dollars. I bought the Aston for emotional reasons - the comparative rarity, the sound, the looks, the GT demeanor it has, the much larger boot/trunk so one can actually go travel with her. Yes, she does drink the fuel, and yes, the maintenance costs can run even more than a Porsche, but I had already had two older air cooled 911s and decided that the Aston had to join my Jaguar XJ8 for I had wanted to buy British for a very long time. Both cars appear to be reliable so I can forgive them if they require maintenance and repair. The thing that loom over the 997.1 is of course the infamous IMS bearing, which is about a $3500 repair requiring dropping the engine. I do love Porsche "911s," don't get me wrong, but I've always had a hankering for an Aston-Martin and I"m not sorry for the purchase at all.
The best proportioned, best looking Aston of all in recent years for my money. The DB9 is rather corpulent and bulky compared to the V8 Vantage. Having thrashed a Vantage around Elvington race track a few years ago, it remains my ultimate dream drive. It's not the fastest car, but as James says, "How fast do you really need to go?!" I have two classic cars, which if I sold would easily put me in the driving seat of a Vantage. The one factor I am wary of is the potential cost of maintenance........ Great view- very informative as per usual!
It’s a great car I’ve had one for 15 years. Had a Ferrari before that and I’ve had far less problems with the Aston. The fact I never dumped it for something else says it all.
Like all these Sports cars that were once close or more than 6 figure amounts the parts still cost that much which people who buy them cheap don’t understand and sadly struggle to maintain them correctly. Beautiful Aston and what a sound. With my vacuum cleaner sounded like that 🤣
A friend at work imported his to Australia. He let me use it for my sons graduation formal. It was such a dream to drive. I understand now what quality and refinement is all about. Now I want one.
Volvo window and mirror switches - press both mirror switches together and the power mirrors fold as on contemporary Volvos. Volvo key fob - pell the leather back on the base clam shell and it says VOLVO. Of course, Aston Martin, Jaguar and Volvo were under Ford ownership at the time and the grilles of many modern Fords still resemble Aston Martins.
Clutch job was $6500 but it was covered by warranty. I have taken to servicing my own now, it’s totally doable but it helps having a Snap-On scan tool...
Excellent review. Concise, punchy and very honest. Keep it up Mr JayEmm. I'm looking for a 'mid life crisis' second car and the AMV8 looks good to me. The fact that you can service and maintain these things quite cheaply is a big plus. However, buy carefully as Mr JayEmm's friend obviously did.
My brother in law bought a v12 db9 on off ebay unseen for £15k, the engine sounded rough like a tractor, and the owner had piled money in and no one could find any faults showing. He bought a new engine and as they started to do the swap the left hand side exhaust Manifolds were found to be crushed..causing the rough running.. Truly a magnificent car for little money.
A little foible of these is that if you open the boot hatch in the rain, all the water runs off in to the boot rather than the channels. In the UK, that's a pain. The sound is phenomenal but repair costs are eye watering. My boss had one and he preferred his XKR over this.
For most of my life, my affordable dream car was an NSX. Now with how much those have appreciated, it''s way outside of the "affordable" range, probably for good. Next was always the V8 Esprit. That one I might have a chance at some day.
Looks great jey I found my dream car 8 years ago it’s a Porsche Boxster 986 2.7 with 37 on the clock mint condition I paid 10 thousand for it , the best deal ever, drove it down to southern Spain on a road trip never missed a beat great fun for not much money and I still have it on my drive great car 💰 😎👍
I have an 2010 Jaguar XKR at the moment and this is the only car I will consider changing for... I'm seeing it as an upgrade in the next couple of years, even if the other half needed some convincing to let me park the Jag on the drive!
Thanks James, good review of a great little car. Surprised though you were so blase about the interior updates that came with the 4.7. Not that the 4.7 interior switchgear is brilliant (unless you get the 2nd facelift with the Vanquish control stack) but it's way better than the fiddly plastic buttons of the early 4.3s, plus you get the added theatre of inserting the crystal key to fire it up
A truly beautiful car. Unfortunately a friend of mine, who works at an Aston Martin dealership, told me that an engine replacement for the older cars costs more than the car itself and hes seen more than a couple toed in with engine failure.
that ticking time bomb on any modern sophisticated car....warranty is expensive and u have to worry about the chances of them paying out... could do LS4 conversion, not sure what cost..
Great review. As you say, a ridiculous amount of car for the money. To answer your question; my dream car is a 1980s Aston V8 Vantage x-pack in blue but I’m about £350,000 short. I’ve just settled for a Jaguar 5.0 XKR 2010 19,000 miles, speed pack in kyanite blue (I like blue) 503 bhp for £26K. Again how daft is that for the money and it’s cheaper than an Aston to service. What’s not to love about cars like this? Unbelievable value and I have a Cheshire CAT grin just looking at it let alone driving it. Fantastic.
I am lucky enough to have owned a V8 vantage for approaching 5 years. Everything reported is true, (although I don’t know when this was recorded , but now the shine has worn off the new model the used prices are creeping up again) mine is ghillies green with immaculatetan leather ... pure class.
Great video as always, I won’t go into my dream cars as not enough time....... I know there is a slight difference in price but I’d be interested in a review between an early Vantage and early R8, both look and sound superb with their V8’s.
What an excellent presenter. Friendly, honest, down to earth. Truly refreshing.

I have two classic cars, which if I sold would easily put me in the driving seat of a Vantage. The one factor I am wary of is the potential cost of maintenance........ Great view- very informative as per usual!
My dream car that i own so far are rsx 350z and now 981s cayman ! You got to make one about this one its a very nice car so happy since i own one
Good review again. I actually enquired about this car when the dealer had it a couple of months ago.
Im selling my 4.7 2010 if you're interested!
Love you did this. Just need to get you into an amg gt and a v12 for a showdown for the 50k budget
I love an Aston Martin any one from the last vanquish backwards. The new platform with AMG parts are to my mind not an Aston Martin
My dream car was, and still is the Aston Martin DB9 Volante. Why was, I bought it and love every single second I'm in it.
Mate, I had to laugh… “It tells you how gently this was driven”…. Next shot “NEEEEEEAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWNNNNNNN”
I really laughed hard at that.
Who else was sad jayemm didn't do a livestream on Sunday 😢
I was but I was in no condition for it
Clutch job was $6500 but it was covered by warranty. I have taken to servicing my own now, it’s totally doable but it helps having a Snap-On scan tool...
my affordable dream car is a Mercedes e55 AMG and I bought one this week
Excellent review. Concise, punchy and very honest. Keep it up Mr JayEmm.
I'm looking for a 'mid life crisis' second car and the AMV8 looks good to me. The fact that you can service and maintain these things quite cheaply is a big plus. However, buy carefully as Mr JayEmm's friend obviously did.
These AMV8's just keep growing on me!! Especially at these prices!! Amazing!
This looks so much better than the brand new Vantage.
Still love those cars. As you know was a close contender for my f type replacement.
Really enjoyable review Jay Emm. Thinking about selling my Cayman S and stepping into an Aston Vantage..
I want to own this vantage even thought I am in hkg. Thanks for your kind presentation
I think the number plate would look better if spaced correctly.
Let the reader do some thinking
great car, great review and now I've got to trawl through autotrader once again on a fantasy mission.
Just off there now myself 🤣
Don't worry about the maintenance. It comes with the Bumper2Bumper warranty.
A little foible of these is that if you open the boot hatch in the rain, all the water runs off in to the boot rather than the channels. In the UK, that's a pain. The sound is phenomenal but repair costs are eye watering. My boss had one and he preferred his XKR over this.
'character sir'
For most of my life, my affordable dream car was an NSX. Now with how much those have appreciated, it''s way outside of the "affordable" range, probably for good. Next was always the V8 Esprit. That one I might have a chance at some day.
Ooh, new clutch.
Legend has it, many an Aston dealership gives away used Vantages for free - it's the clutches where they get you.
less than £2000
The Germans could not come up with anything as Beautiful as this British lovely XXXX
The car doesn't look cheap but that illegal, mis-spaced number plate does.
^^^ this. ruins an otherwise nice car........
Yep
Not that the 4.7 interior switchgear is brilliant (unless you get the 2nd facelift with the Vanquish control stack) but it's way better than the fiddly plastic buttons of the early 4.3s, plus you get the added theatre of inserting the crystal key to fire it up
First vid I have watched by this reviewer. He's really good and I will be back.
Thanks for coming John
Nice exhaust note. Casual Morris Minor at 12mins
A foot thick of Aston Martin service invoices should make one think 🤔
They’re all servicing/MoT etc. Car only went in for 1 issue!
A fair number of services over 15 years, I sold mine with plenty of paperwork as well
Stephen Butcher shows someone has loved it 😉
a friend had one. money pit.
You tell your wife that's a foot? ;)
Just bought one, a bit newer, convertible, sub 10k miles, newer, 40k. Same reasons as you gave.
I’m on the eye out for the soft top version
A truly beautiful car. Unfortunately a friend of mine, who works at an Aston Martin dealership, told me that an engine replacement for the older cars costs more than the car itself and hes seen more than a couple toed in with engine failure.
that ticking time bomb on any modern sophisticated car....warranty is expensive and u have to worry about the chances of them paying out... could do LS4 conversion, not sure what cost..
The Aston, the right sort of car to be seen in , in CH! best wishes James mark
Fantastic.
My affordable dream car is the TVR SAGARIS
Lovely car but how “affordable” are they now?
amazing looks - tragic TVR was lost just as they were getting into their stride - The PW era was golden - we miss you Peter..
Same, still one of my favourites. Adam Ivell reviewed one and it was worth 90 grand
Great engine, but also a bad one 😂
@@harveywhite3001 explain?
I am lucky enough to have owned a V8 vantage for approaching 5 years. Everything reported is true, (although I don’t know when this was recorded , but now the shine has worn off the new model the used prices are creeping up again) mine is ghillies green with immaculatetan leather ... pure class.
Great video as always, I won’t go into my dream cars as not enough time.......
I know there is a slight difference in price but I’d be interested in a review between an early Vantage and early R8, both look and sound superb with their V8’s.
