  • Piketberg farm in the Western Cape of South Africa has a unique and ideal microclimate within the fruit growing industry. Situated in Piket-Bo-Berg, an agricultural subdivision of Picketberg, the farm lies around 850 meters above sea level.
The summers are hot and dry and the winters are cold and wet, which together with the farm’s good quality sandy soil, is the ideal combination for growing the fruit varieties Piketberg farm produces.
The farm consists of two farming units and is predominantly an apples, pears, peaches and nectarine farm with soft citrus established in 2014 and 2018.
The Pome fruit is predominantly marketed in the European and Asian markets and a small consignment of Stone fruit is exported as well. The first small yield for the soft citrus was in the 2020 season and it was marketed in the local South African market
The irrigation system installed on the farm is highly efficient allowing for
    optimum water use.
The normal water allocation/usage per hectare is 7 000 cubic meters per hectare per annum.
The supply is further supported by the large storage dams on the
farm to ensure water security in lean times. The dams are filled up through
catchments on the farm as well as registered boreholes. These boreholes were the main source of water during the previous drought and were sufficient to ensure irrigation on the farm and sustain the orchards.
The farm’s infrastructure is well developed, consisting of fit-for- purpose farm buildings, management housing, a pack house complex, pack shed equipment, and worker housing and it has easy access from a tar road with a short gravel road leading to the packhouse. The farm roads are well-maintained and there is good fencing around the farm.
With the current water allocation and efficient infrastructure, Piketberg farm has the potential to increase plantings in the future. There is an opportunity to develop the farm with 15 hectares of available arable land. Over and above that there is 5 hectares identified as potential arable land for future developments.
