thanks very much for watching, don't forget to subscribe, and give the video a thumbs up if you enjoyed!!
Sometimes I think we underestimate Jack's humour, the amount of puns he gets in every single video is literally genius
his humor is top tier!!
Did you mean literary genius, rather than literally genius?
@@t.a.k.palfrey3882 you cheeky thing 🤣🤣🤣.....Jack must be proud
We seriously need to make a running list of all these puns!
@@ameliacremer5118 Oh, but Jack would walk away as winner of any such running list. 🤔🇰🇪
Jack u should totally do a “my favourite book from each popular trope” video of you have time :)
your commitment to saving lives with these book recommendations deserves an award
Agree!
Unrelated but can I ask if your name is actually Zar or something similar? Not trying to be weird i just have a similar name and it's kinda rare lol
I think we can only trust him on books he hated, because on those I agreed. Books jack adores are books I rate 3-4 stars, but those he says are good but doesn't obsess with are those I absolutely adore! Like, Circe is my favorite book of all time, while Song of Achilles was only 3.5 stars to me
@@sin3358 same, but it depends on person ofc
@@sin3358 I am really trying hard to understand his fascination with Taylor Jenkins Reid....
On another note, how DO these 'pass' books get book deals??
The way Jack roasts books he doesn't like makes me trust his recommendations even more.
I'm a mythology nut and I bought Circe for my girlfriend. She had heard negative things about it, but I'm glad I proved her wrong, and so was she. She later agreed to read Song of Achilles, and it blew her away. I'll tell ya, these myths are fluid in the way they are told, and it is beautiful.
Heyyy I’m trying to read more mythology books. Would highly love to get your recommendations. I have read almost all books from Greek mythologies so I would prefer anything other than Greek Mythology ❤️
@@Niniii07 the bane chronicles - egyptian mythology by rick riordan
the palace of illusion - indian mythology by chitra diwakaruni
I've seen a lot of bad reviews about circe idk why, it's one of my favourite books everrr

jack: the privilege of pretty is real
also real: jack looking smashing
addressing his own privilege :D
@@ievakalniskane1992 hmm. i wonder if he realizes it...
@@jmsl910 he knows it. i dont think he considers himself as "pretty" per say, but he definitely knows he might get away with few things than other people for sure
I've read both Circe and The Song of Achilles AND I NEED MORE BOOKS FROM THIS AUTHOR.
Her writing style is so GOOD
I believe she’s currently working on a fiction about Persephone!
@@Cokasianable yes I heard about that too, can't wait! I loved reading about Persephone and Hades in Tempting Hades by Emma Hamm
I've heard so much about song of Achilles, but never really came around to read it, maybe because overhyped stuff usually end up being mediocre, at least for me. so if u can, could u possibly tell me why should i read it?
@@quratulaiiin i haven’t read SoA yet but I did read Circe, and I devoured it. I loved the prose and the different characters that visit Circe’s island. I especially loved following her own growth and was very moved by the ending. All I know about SoA is that it’s critically considered BETTER than Circe, which I think is saying a lot. More devastating too, I believe.
@@quratulaiiin her writing style is beautiful, and you will develop such a strong attachment to the characters. It's tragic for obvious reasons if you know the story behind it but also very bittersweet. Highly recommend trying it for yourself!
Just finished Circe and I felt like the book kept getting more interesting the further in I was. The first 90 pages were kind of eh and then it just kept getting more interesting with Circe's development to the point that I was sad it ended. Still a 4/5 stars read. Absolutely recommend!
Cersei, sersi, circe, etc etc like what
No booktuber ever has ever so consistently gave me book recs, I know that as long as Jack uploads videos, I'll have books I want to read.
"you may recorgnize circe from her previous hits"
ah yes percy jackson sea of monsters
"such as the odyssey"
oh.
You say "make it wholesome" and then "just the tip"😂 I'm dying
PLEASE KEEP THIS AS A SERIES

I would be really curious to see your opinion on Babel by R. F. Kuang. Given you've study literature and enjoyed Dark Academia, you may have quite interesting opinions on that book and its themes.
We need to get Jack to read that book!!!
Oooooh I’d really love to hear Jack’s review of Babel
imp sure he’s read it but said he wouldn’t speak about it because he can see all the comments being about his pronunciation of the title
I'm fairly certain he did read it and talked about it in one of his videos I just can't remember which one
@@elizabethgrove9418 that was the books I'd never read vid and he said that he wouldn't read it because everyone would be arguing about his pronunciation of the title
Not to be dramatic but Jack is *the best* booktuber out there, I singularly have him to thank for the reawakening of my interest in reading! Went from barley picking up a book in three years to working my way thru one-three titles per month and it’s been great!
Same
Honestly, I am reading Circe right now and I loved the way you described Madeline Miller’s writing. It was one of those things I felt but couldn’t describe. Your videos are amazing and I love your book recommendations. Thank you so much!
Madeline millers style of writing is such a gem, i loved the song of achilles not only because of the story, but because the writing was so so beautiful! and i’m not even native english so i thought i’d have problems understanding the more lyrical style but it was so easy to dive into the story and forget i was reading
your content makes me smile like no other. I genuinely turn on one of your videos when I feel down sometimes. Your wit, your confidence in your online presence, and the content itself that you share make your channel such an accessible escape for many, I'd imagine. I am writing a literary memoir (poetry -- but also not really?) and your book recommendations are always on par with my taste in literature and inform my own ventures with writing. A resounding thank you for making things happen on each of your channels. Cheers!
I think it would be cool if you put time codes in the description with the names of the books!
Yes I love when videos have chapters
I just read Shuggie Bain and honestly… it’s definitely one of the best books I’ve ever read. An incredibly well-written character study that feels more real than any other fiction book I’ve read. In my opinion, a modern classic.
I read Carrie Soto right when it came out and I enjoyed reading it but also when you said the title I thought "wait did I read that?" and I think that's my review of it
Jack, I still can't get over the fact that you read a lot of Japanese literature and haven't read Akutagawa yet. His best works are mostly short stories so you might not like them but Kappa is his only novel and it's GOOD. (other fav. short stories are Rashomon, In a groove, Hell Screen, Spinning Gears, The Life of a Stupid Man, A Note to a Certain Old Friend)
I have! I thought In a Groove was genius !!
@@jack_edwards omg thanks, now I can sleep lol btw Kappa is a good story, it's dystopic in a 1984 way (but I don't want to say anything more because there is only one Orwell) so if you have the chance it's worth giving it a try!
you know it's always a good day if jack is giving us new content 🤩
This is such a helpful video and a series if Jack decides to make one. It's tough to comb through the suggestions on IG and know which books are truly worth it.
I would love to see a full spoiler breakdown video about Bunny by Mona Awald.
Trash. Done.
Have you read it? It's really fun
@@regancambridge3413 yes, that’s why I said it was trash. Seems like people either love it and it’s their best read of the year or like me think it was trash
I did my capstone project on Circe by Madeline Miller, so I am so glad to hear that you enjoyed it, too! Song of Achilles was amazing, as well. I feel like Madeline Miller just really knows how to end a book in a way that is bittersweet, but sooooo satisfying. She's also great at putting a unique spin on a well-known tale.
Video idea: reviewing books by selected authors (most popular/ recommended by subscribers ect.) from different countries.
It could be a bit tricky cause translation is a huge part of how you will receive the book, but nonetheless, I think it could be quite cool
Crazy idea: What about reviewing Reece's Book Club book choices? Just for inspiration :) xx, great channel, Jack!
jack, you need to do a 'reading my subscribers' books!!' I'm sure many people have done their own work - It would be super interesting to see!!
Love your videos Jack!! Thank you for all the suggestions over the years. :)
Jack makes me want to be a good writer purely so that one day he might read a book I've written and not absolutely hate it lmao
I’ve been so excited for you to talk about shuggie bain! I have not been able to stop thinking about it since I read it a few months ago
Here for my dose of Jack recommendations and expanding TBR! Lol :D
inverting the roles! let me recommend you a book, since you liked the idea of tokyo ueno station (but not the execution), i think you would probably enjoy The Posthumous Memoirs Of Brás Cubas by Machado de Assis. cant really suggest a translated version since i’ve read it only in portuguese, but i think you can easily find it if you search for it. machado is an amazing writer, his books are well known and well loved classics here in brazil 💚
Jack I am begging you to read Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart, it's a beautiful queer love story set in 90s Glascow. Similar themes to Shuggie Bain, similarly raw and dark, but there is an undeniable glimmer of hope which I find hard to describe.
I have such a long TBR and it always increases after watching your videos! Though this time I got to take Glory off the list - so thanks for the rant on that one lol!
I actually wrote my seminar work about Madeline Millers Book "Circe" and compared aspects that were depicted differently in Madeline Millers Version to the Odyssey...and I really enjoyed it^^ loved the book and also your video☺️
i'm reading shuggie bain right now and you're bang on, every time i take a break i have to sigh heavily and have a little lie down
I would love for you to read this new book
(The tears of Mount Sinjar)
I usually don’t give new book much chance but this got recommended and It’s absolutely worth time.
Thank you for this new books, cant wait to dig in after I finished The dictionary of lost words😊
can i just say that faint bgm is so wonderfully jack edwards that i feel like if we ever met irl i'd be hearing it play as he speaks
Just discovered your channel and it’s incredible! Totally binging all your vids at the moment ❤
i got so excited to see you discuss shuggie bain and loving it! I'm writing my thesis on it currently
Thank you for all the books I'll be looking for heading up to the Christmas holidays. I'm trying to build back up a book fund so I don't buy too many books.
now that its almost gift season you could do another version of the book gift guide/book recommendations based on specific types of people 🙏 your content is a blessing to me everyday (yet a curse to my sleep)
Just finished my last read and now I've found my next! Thank you Jack for the amazing recommendations and for inspiring me to get into reading again ❤️
Ooouh I just ordered Night Crawling yesterday and am 👀 so forward to it and more so now after your praise!
As you now read Shuggie Bain, you should really read Young Mungo by the same author!!! It's also heartbreaking but we really need to hear your thoughts
thank you jack for making hilarious content. whenever im sad or upset i come to your channel because i end up laughing my 🎂 off
Your rant about Glory hurt me 😭 I absolutely loved it.
We need more of these!!
It’s crazy how many booms you’ve read lately that are repetitive. I don’t feel like that’s something I’ve ever heard you say so to hear it about multiple books you’ve read lately seems like something way out of your comfort zone might be coming up soon 💜
Okay idk why but I lovedddddd Jack's outro in this video. Like the 'keep in touch' part got to me ✨
It was like talking to a friend, Ilyyy Jack ✨
I love how Jack apparently knows so many different ways of smashing *takingnotes
I’ve been waiting to hear your thoughts on Shuggie Bain to see if it’s worth the depression!!! Thank you 🖤
So I'm a big fan of Bojack Horseman and Rafael Bob-Waksberg's sense of humour, but still had a similar experience with the book, though I think more of it landed for me probably. I agree that the first story with the wedding is one of the strongest, and a lot were very basic or just average, but there were a few other standouts for me that had me laughing quite a lot, like the one with the young woman on vacation with her family dealing with the strained relationship with her estranged brother, I really related to a lot of that and thought the perspective flip at the start of it was really cleverly executed. It likely comes down to whether or not your sense of humor jives with it or not.
I absolutely loved Shuggie Bain and now want to read Young Mungo. Don't quote me on this but I read that the author was inspired by his favorite book, and mine, A Little Life which makes sense. Also welcome to America! NYC was a great choice, its an amazing city.
such a good idea for a video, i literally love you
Omg I just finished Breast and eggs and had huge expectations for it but it fell a little flat to me too for the same reasons as yours, I thought I was alone with this point of view as the reviews online are so good, and maybe I missed something. Feels better to know someone else felt the same !
You should do this to classic books
Jack, I think you would like The Postumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas. It is also narrated in the perspective of a dead man, and it's a masterpiece of classical Brazilian literature!
Thanks for the recommendation
Heyy, I just learned about NoViolet's book, Glory. I am glad you had such strong feelings towards it because I probably would have picked it up if I had seen it in a store, but now I won't. So the reason it would have been an auto-buy is that I really liked her first one, ''We need new names''. If you have yet to read it, I would recommend that one. And if you do read it, I would love love love to hear what you think about it and whether it redeems her or not🤣.
Hey Jack I got some book recommendations I thought you might enjoy (some books are older)
- Melnitz, Charles Lewinsky: On jewish history in Switzerland
- Nigthtrain to Lisbon, Pascal Mercier: Swiss professor learns about revolution in Portugal
- The buddha in the attic, Julie Otsuka: Japanese women who immigrate to the US pre WW2
- The secret in the fire, Henning Mankell: Girl flees from war in Mosambique
- Everest, John Krakauer: Retelling of his everest expedition and his thoughts on the climbing industry
Totally agree with your pass on The Disaster Tourist and Tokyo Ueno Station!
I have an important question! I used to read A LOT and now despite being a literature major I seem to have lost my love for it/my ability to focus. I am looking to somewhat "game-ify" reading in order to get back into doing it for pleasure and am wondering if you have any spreadsheet/reading log recommendations where I can review my data and stats as I go. I would love to read the reading log from your company but I am very poor and also am hoping to find something a little more like a spreadsheet which will calculate my stats for me at the end of a week/month/year. A video about your recommendations or things you or people you know use or maybe a video experimenting with different options would be both, at least in my opinion, very interesting, and very much appreciated!
been waiting for this 🧡
I'm so glad you liked Circe! i wanted to read this for a long long long time you haven't reviewed it that's why it made me hesitate to buy books wo your thoughts lol anyways i bought it a few days ago and omg you reviewed itt aaaaa thanks Jack
Oh man, you lost a great opportunity with Carrie Soto Is Back, since a "smash" is actually a type of tennis shot ahah you could have said something like "it wasn't a smash, it was just a lob/drop shot" ahah anyway, thank you for another smash video! :)
I agree with you so much on Conversations on Love! It started fine but then it just got SO boring over time that I left it and never picked it up again!
I just finished reading Nightcrawling. I just came here to say: urgh! Such an awesome reading!! Thanks for sharing
was curious as to how you would review Glory ever since you said you didn’t like it, and i don’t think i can disagree with anything you said about it.
couple of the others sound great though, thanks for the recommendations!
jack bringing out so much good content, while living his best life! good for him, and for us! :)
How about an idea of your next video uh reviewing some of the most well written uhm yk children books, light novels, or fantasy genre ones, idk if i can have enough patience for finishing any books bc accidentally i spend lots of time on reading pages but ending ups totally forgetting what the books are basically about so, this Christmas, thanks to those shopping malls always volume up the same Christmas songs, sure i definitely need a list of many great ppl’s perspectives anyways, i like fictional books written in such metaphors as referring to this reality tho-
Jack!! You need to read Stuart Douglas' second book, 'Young Mungo'! It's got very similar themes but in my opinion has a far more hopeful tone and I really think you would love it!
I am so glad you enjoyed Shuggie Bain. It's one of my favourite books of all time and Agnes is such a beautifully written character. Please read Young Mungo by the same author when you get a chance 💖
Unrelated...can we have a book gift guide for Christmas again? I loved that one!
i love videos like this the best. They keep my tbr growing and growing. this is a great idea. smash or pass…
Will you ever consider reading similar graphic style books like maus? Hooky by Miriam Bonastre Tur is honestly one of my favorite books. It’s such a magical coming of age story and made me ugly cry. Also if u go with the online version, they have an adorably whimsical soundtrack too :>>
LOVEEE HAPPY HOUR !!!! its a book version of bejeweled by taylor swift me thinks
I would love a video of just your favourite comedic books especially with British humour
Super fun idea, lots of books I read and liked, some I really want to read still, especially Nightcrawling.
Nightcrawling made me sick to my stomach the entire time I was reading it. Incredible read, beautifully written, and I'm glad to see it on booktube because it deserves so much more hype
A very battered and stained Shuggie Bain paperback has just made its way to me via many other readers. Will take this as a sign to read it next!
I like this video a lot, but if I might make a recommendation, maybe you could do a part two to smash or pass except you judge the books by their covers. (A bit more true to what the game smash or pass is, but then you could read all the books you ‘smash or pass’ on and then review them afterwards.)
Read shuggie bain a month ago, still think about it on daily basis. Shook my heart and teared it apart. 🥺
These videos are fun and interesting. Also, I recommend you to read Roadside Picnic, a book I very much enjoyed. It was also made into a film, Stalker (1979) and inspired the Stalker video game series.
Happy Halloween 🎃 Jack!
amazing video jack!
Nightcrawling takes place where I live. I’m so happy to hear non local people find it moving because it’s a story that needs to be told and it was told well.
Hi Jack, thanks very much. I’m looking forward to reading some of these books. Please read Wings of Fire: The Dragonet Prophecy by Tui T. Sutherland, I want to see you review that book and what will be your rating. It’s adventure, fantasy and YA fiction
Hahaha I prefer our rude British humor as well 🤣 loved this way of wrapping up what you have recently read
Jack can you do a reading fantasy romance books from booktok/booktube and tell us what's good to read???😭
For popular books I haven't heard of most of them!
glory it’s a complete chaos give’s me nothing but headache 😭😭😭
I think Jack would enjoy Latin American authors a lot. There are amazing books within the Latin American community that I think it would be interesting to hear his point of view on some of them due to the huge cultural differences and the interpretation/translation of Spanish slang into English.
As someone studying Hispanic literature in University, I 100% would love to see this!
Each time you upload a video I have to add like 3 or 4 books to my tbr lmao
books i'm going to try:
- shuggie bain
- the taylor jenkins reid discography😍
- happy hour
- pizza girl
- conversations on love
I absolutely loved Happy Hour by Marlowe Granados. So many passages in there I resonated with and made me think
Their adventures were also so amusing
🖊️ adding to tbr
0:07 how can you describe the smash or pass trend in such a professional way like woah you can be an author tbh because of ur vocabulary you use so effortlessly in everyday life
whenever i watch his videos I get this intense urge to read all the books in my tbr
