- Somalia is promising to defend its territory by any legal means after Ethiopia signed an initial agreement with the self-declared republic of Somaliland to access one of its ports along the Red Sea. In exchange for access to the port, landlocked Ethiopia could become the first country to recognise Somaliland - which claimed independence in 1991. But the Somali government sees Somaliland as part of its territory and says Ethiopia's action endangers peace in the Horn of Africa. Chuck Nwosu reports

Of course! Every country on this planet leases land for various purposes. In the case of Somaliland, it is no different. It reminds me of an old Ethiopian proverb that goes like this: "ሊበሏት ያሰቧትን አሞራ ጅግራ ነች ይሏታል". This proverb is translated as "They name a dove which they want to eat as a chicken". It is a clear indication that every country in the world is in a race to win a plot of that land, and it seems they are snatched away by a country that they least expected. Happy holidays!

Abiy has problems with Tigray, Amharas and his own people Oromo. Abiy has problem with Sudan, Eritrea, Djabouti and Kenya and now he added Somalia to his list.
There is an Institution right there called the African Union. It has within a Commission of Peace and Security. Why not let that Commission take charge the need of sea access in a manner that takes into account sensitivities where instead Ethiopia and Somaliland signing the agreement, it is the Peace and Security Commission for the sake of Peace and mutual respect that speaks to Somalia, to Somaliland exposing to each the necessity of Ethiopia to access the sea. And the Commission of Peace and Security obtain the agreement in a spirit that sea is a common good and that as a continent, allows Ethiopia to access the sea is a generosity that is beyond the internal dispute between Somalia and Somaliland.
What is the point of having a continental Institution with its internal structures if one can't figure out how it can be use?
Instead of giving a political dimension to this need to access the sea, they have giving it a humanitarian dimension, based on the idea that those who are blessed with sea are called to bless others by allowing them an access to the sea in a genesis of a common destiny as Africans in Africa. But this is not the philosophy. Predation and deprivation are the philosophy.
Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea would never allow Ethiopia to build a base. Thats exactly why Ethiopia is cheating

Ethiopia, the host country of the African Union, knew about the dispute between Somaliland and Somalia. The necessity to have access to the sea should be done in a constructive and harmonious manner. A few months ago, the central authorities of Ethiopia were fighting against the TPLF (Tigray's People Liberation Front) within Ethiopia. To what extent does it make sense to sign an agreement with Somaliland knowing about the existence of the internal disagreement between Somaliland and Somalia? In other words, why does one want others to accept the thing one can not accept for himself?
The necessity to access the sea could have been done a humanitarian dimension where, for the sake of peace and the future in togetherness, the sensitivity of Somalia is taken into account.

NB- Oil has recently been discovered in Somaliland. Norwegian seismic survey company, TGS, estimated that the Somaliland basin as a whole likely holds offshore reserves of about 30 billion barrels which would make it the 19th largest reserve in the world.

Ethiopian recognition is as good as zero. What you need is to be recognized by the UN, US, EU. The shortest way to your recognition as an independent State passes through Mogadishu and not Adis Ababa. Read the history Eriterea.
Eriterea was under Trusteeship of Ethiopia, it took thirty years of hard war to gain their land back. They will swallow you laughing at you, I won’t live to see it, but it will certainly happen. Do not get frustrated with Somalia. Mogadishu will probably allow you to enjoy more independence and at the same time offer you more say in the Federal system.
