I love Scott and this idea but why oh why would he go to Las Ramblas?! Barcelona is one of the best cities on the planet but he could have stepped off at almost any other metro stop and got better Paella
The paella you found looked surprisingly good for one. Definitely explore Barcelona properly. Having been probably 20 times, I can report it is wonderful! P.S. I suspect trying to buy frozen paella in a Supermercat just off Las Ramblas is akin to searching for a bag of frozen fish 'n' chips around Piccadilly Circus. It's not you, it's the challenge. Cheers!
I'm a guerrilla tree planter as well Scott. Its been a passion of mine for twenty years . Like you, I collect seeds of native trees and grow them on in pots for a few years before finding spots to set them free. Good work !
I work for a large retailer which sells apple trees in Spring... Of course my colleagues didn't water them, and they were going to be thrown out.... But then ended up coming home with 15 apple trees for one euro each... Local park now has 15 apple trees growing well and fast!
I brought two loquat fruit stones back from Barcelona in 2015, and I now have two 6ft loquat trees in the garden. I doubt that they'll ever bear fruit, but it is amazing that they've grown.
I went to Lisbon for a day trip last year, just to ride the old trams, and visit the Transport Museum, it was amazing what you can do in a day. I also did a day trip to Copenhagen, to visit Tivoli Gardens. Way cheaper than having to book hotels. No luggage either. Just hop on a plane and go on a foreign adventure! 😃
@yyyfffff33333 Early morning flights out and late evening flights back. Ryanair has several flights a day to Copenhagen from Stansted. And for Lisbon, I flew there early morning from Luton with Easyjet, flew back to Luton in the evening with Wizzair. If you book far enough ahead, you can find fairly cheap flights.
That was great Scott. I've loved my visits to Barcelona over the years, it's a beautiful city. Thanks for planting all those trees over the years too - an awesome gesture in your home town.
Love that you plant randomly. I think more people should be doing the same! Its called gorilla gardening and its being done really well in Todmorden. They call it "incredible edibles" Absolutely fantastic concept!!! X
Frozen paella is very rare in Spain, you may find it in bigger supermarkets in the outskirts but not in the small city supermarkets. What most people buy is the paella content (frozen shrimp and vegetables) and then add that to the freshly made rice.
@alfrredd Yeah, it wasn't anything special as I recall. I remember getting it because my accommodation had a hob and a pan, and it seemed the most cost-effective meal to fill me up. One bag = two evening dinners for less than 5 euros!
Just back from 4 days in Barcelona, one of my favourite cities! Had a fantastic paella in a restaurant called Ferran in the Gothic Quarter. Oh and a metro option to the city from the airport is L9 Sud to Zona Universitaria then L3 to Catalunya! If you're there for more than a day get a Hola Barcelona ticket as it covers the metro from the airport and then all the main transport in zone 1.
Paella is so easy to make from scratch Scott. Just remember to burn the bottom at the very end. The Spanish call it Socarrat. It imparts a beautiful smoky flavour.
Be careful with the socarrat technique, as it may ruin any poor rice that may have been cooked. It is not easy. Neither is Paella nor Socarrat. If you make a mistake, you end up with a bland, overcooked rice, and then burnt. That is why there are many who complain about having eaten a bad Paella because it was not well cooked.
Great seeing Barcelona as only got back from there last week. For paella .. you should go to Valencia .. and visit the restaurants in the national park where the rice is grown ( you can get there by bus from the city )
My favourite city. If you've never been to that market just off La Ramblas it's a feast for the eyes, with brilliant food take to take away and watch the world go by. We stayed in that lane in the Gothic Quarter, it's a handy place to be located, not too far from the beaches too, great to chill out on (we sunbathed in Jan 23!)
I stumbled across your channel by accident. But what a happy accident. Your videos are fantastic. I love how they are put together your knowledge also recall of previous visits. Also your very easy to watch. Keep up the great work
Flew back from Barcelona today after a weekend there. Brilliant city. On saturday, I ate in the restaurant next door to where you had your paella. Food market is amazing. Great video Scott, thanks.
I did the same type of daytrip. But from Amsterdam to Dublin with Air Lingus for 20 euro's return daytrip. Had a Guinness at The Gravediggers and a Dublin Coddle for lunch and the went back to Amsterdam :)
So much learned again...thank you...I seem to remember in the Palmy Days of Concorde it was de rigeur to fly to New York on a Friday morning, have lunch, rather quickly, in Manhattan (pre-reserved) then Concorde return to Heathrow...fearsomely expensive but so self-indulgent and ostentatious!...dgp/uk

Some years ago I went to Torremolinas for a day trip - between Christmas and New Year ... walk on the beach, feel the warm sun, well worth it!! I saw your video from there, next time must expand where I visit! Barcelona looks great, thanks for reminding, must visit again. (Same applies to Singapore & Cairns too ... just not as easy!!)
Hoi, Scott, pretty interesting. There are important things to catch. Definitely a day made for us. Well done. Been to BCN/Both Terminals and the Ciudad several times. Greetings, Markus
Don't worry, Scott. Piegoens don't poo while their flying - only while their perched. Enjoyed the video, was in Barcelona earlier this year for the first time and had a fantastic holiday. Didn't have any paella but sampled some tremendous tapas.
I have done the exact same thing from London. Ate in sane market but at one of the eateries in the centre. When quiet and order a beer with food they kept topping the beer up free of charge, awesome.
Hi my name is Jane and welcome to my comments 😊 Scott I love your channel and your journeys with Blair .. just wanted to tell you that I always look forward to your next vlog . Wish you all the best ❤ And the fact that you get really wasted sometp😂
I had to chuckle when you talked about it raining. Many years back I got to go the CF Barcelona centenary celebration match (Barca v Brazil), it absolutely chucked it down, I'm talking storm Darragh on steriods...and the only place to shelter was to go down a level and squeeze under the cover.
I've been living in Glasgow for a while, and a couple of times I saw random apple trees in the south of the city, I presume some of them are from you. So, now I know who might planted those random trees. Thanks btw!
Had similar issues getting from the airport. The station I was going to had a different name on the map to the ticket machine. Couple this with it being late at night, it took a while to work out.
I did a cookery lesson in the Triana St Georges market in Seville a few years ago. We made paella. It was a hoot. 3 hours of entertainment and rolled out blitzed on all the wine consumed. Barca is wonderful if you like art and architecture. Sagrada Familia is a joy. Im sure I got a chilled paella from Consum when I was in Spain in October.
Birds Eye does a really nice frozen paella. Ryan Air are quite good for emissions as their aircraft are always new and they pack so many economy passengers on each plane
Barcelona looks like a good place to visit Scott even for a paella (which looked great). You must have got pretty hungry by the time you arrived home again after all your travelling I think 😊
Thanks for bringing me along, Scott!! In the spring of 1972, I visited Barcelona for the only time in my life. Surprisingly, it looks pretty much the way I remember. It was the only place I lived for under $5 a day, aided by Arthur Frommer's book. Chuck in Northern New England
Scott, I loved your environmental talk and I will now pay more attention to the carbon offset fee when I’m booking a flight and pay it. That is wonderful that you plant trees in Paisley. Now I’m hungry for paella. Good episode.

You will just have to get the cookbooks out, Scott, and treat the family to paella. My memories of Barcelona - a display of chicken's heads, (beaks and all), in that amazing food market, the wonderful beach which drops quite steeply a few yards from shore, my friend getting her bag stolen by one of the gangs who pretend to bump into you and, in the confusion, make off with your stuff. Lovely architecture, however I am with Sue on the pigeons!
May I suggest if its possible and after the city has recovered, you do a trip to Valencia for Paella. It's reputation is much better. Love your work. Keep it up.
Cheers Scott you’ve gone up a lot in my estimation. Most people criticise and do nothing themselves. You were out there helping green up Scotland before it was fashionable.
I was poised over my keyboard when you first pronounced paella like a first-time abroad Brit tourist, Scott, but thankfully you gave the Spanish pronunciation. Two lls in Spanish is always pronounced as a J or sometimes a Y, as in paella.
