  • “Black Excellence to me is freedom, it’s the ability to be, to create.” Recently, the Reasonable Doubt cast had the absolute pleasure of attending the 20th annual Martha’s Vineyard African American film festival. They were surrounded by so much Black creativity and excellence, but that's a part of the legacy of Martha’s Vineyard (Oak Bluffs in particular).

OMG, an absolutely incredible series. The storyline, writing, and acting are stupendous. The schoolgirl crush Jax had on Damon was so romantic (episode 5). It would be criminal and utterly foolhardy for Hulu not to green-light seasons 2 and 3 now. Yes?

Whenever I hear writers talk about not having to translate aspects of their culture in a writer's room I can never tell if that's meant to say it creates a better process or they just hate doing it. I understand how that can be frustrating but it honestly makes me some people sound a little whiney. Especially when there is no context of the controversy that normally happens or the way some stories get watered down.

Microaggressions are not just limited to the writer's room, but taking race out of it, it is a cultural divide. Imagine being someone from Ireland trying to explain your normal customs to a room full of Spanish people. It is necessary, but it can also be exhausting and draining, if you have to do it all the time, or have had to do it for most of your life. That is what life is like for a lot of Black people in predominantly white environments, regardless of their profession.

@@thesmileyeffect Thank you for the explanation. I assumed it was about something like that. I think I just have a had time empathizing because I'm black and I grew up and went to school and worked around white, Latin, Caribbean, Haitian and east/south/south east Asians and either they understood my culture or would be willing to ask questions and it never felt like a chore to explain it just felt like another step in getting to know someone. I even went to a predominantly white boarding school and barely experienced this. I guess I've been lucky and when I hear BIPOC folk talking about the drain of explaining culture I have a hard time relating.

Yes, it’s important to separate people by race to make sure they know they aren’t capable of being successful in the world without that - 🙄🙄🙄 - that’s basically what ur saying here Hulu

Or maybe what they are acknowledging is that someone's race and ethnicity can influence their perspectives and their art. Also, many Black artists and creatives have to operate in spaces where they are outnumbered. Each of these individuals speaking in this video are celebrating the festival and why it is so important to be in a space where most, if not all, of the people there can relate to your POV.
