      Be careful of using any off-the-shelf Freon because it has a sealer in it and if it hits air it will become as hard as epoxy and it will damage your system if you ever lose all the freon and air gets in the system.

      Not only seniors. So many mechanic shops are scams. There are good ones, but they're few and far between. People are doing more on their own these days. After a few dings at the mechanic shop, costing thousands, one is forced to buy the tools and watch a few how to vids.

    I don't recommend telling people they don't need a manifold gauge set or to diagnose their issue properly. That's really bad advice if someone has a leak or pressure switch issue. They could just be pissing money down the drain by attempting a recharge. I know what you meant by it but people that don't know what you meant might take that advice the wrong way, the really really wrong way.

    WARNING! If refrigerant pressure is so low that compressor will NOT engage, the system is full of air!!! The entire system MUST be evacuated with a vacuum pump. Otherwise the refrigerant will mix with air and the high side pressure will be dangerously high. Also if the system is not vacuum pumped first, the efficiency will be very poor. You may be able to add a little refrigerant if the compressor engages and kicks on and off. If the compressor does NOT run at all, there's too much air and you are risking serious damage to the a/c system. Air also contains moisture which is the worst enemy of especially R-134 systems. BEWARE!

    How do you know it needs more refrigerant? Did you diagnose that with 0 knowledge of mobile a/c systems? In your driveway? With a beer in your hand? Did you check the low pressure cut out switch? How about the EX valve? Or mabe you have a restriction in the system,, or mabe your heat control door flap in your heater box isnt closing tightly allowing heat into your interior air, just a few of the MANY MANY different problems you can have in an automotive a/c system. Where did the refrigerant go? Mabe you have a leak? Dont you think you should fix that leak? So when its 100 degrees out it works well. PEOPLE DONT JUST ADD REFRIGERANT. spend the money and fix it correctly and have yrs of trouble free a/c in your car

    Why bypass the compressor protection? Simply add refrigerant until the low pressure switch is satisfied and the compressor will start in a fully protected manner.

    • @billwilson3609
      @billwilson3609 2 года назад

      That can take some time but is the best practice since the compressor shaft seals get their lubrication from the oil in the refrigerant.

      I tried adding R-134a yesterday to my 2005 Dodge Neon and found that my cheap Super Tech valve failed to puncture the bottle seal. Returned it and bought A/C Pro. Used it this afternoon where the gauge showed near zero PSI. Started charging and after a minute released the trigger to find the pointer in the yellow. The AC was blowing cold inside the car so left it running to see if the pointer stayed steady or dropped. It did gradually drop down into the green to 45 psi so left the car running to see if it would drop more. It stabilized at 45 psi with the temp at the vent 50 degrees which felt frigid since it's 100 degrees F in the shade today. There's still some left in the bottle so may add that tomorrow morning when it's cooler when I check the PSI to see if it's dropped below 45 PSI.

If I wire it to the battery it works fine., but as soon as I take off the wire from the battery it shuts off again. I changed out the relay to a brand-new one and it didn't help. What do you think might be the problem?

    • @eveinfinityz
      @eveinfinityz 8 лет назад

      +Edwin Gutierrez You A/C system is leaking. When the pressure is too low, the PCM will not send a signal to energize the compressor clutch. Also, if you put R134a with sealant into your A/C system, no shop will performing an A/C service on your car. They will most likely recommend you overhaul the A/C components and replace them with new ones which will cost a lot of money.

  • @myRatchets

    The idea of this video is to have cold air come out of the vents of your $1000 car, not spend $500-$800 finding and diagnosing a leak, vacuuming the system, replacing the parts and recharging it. I've done this to alot of el cheapo cars and it has always been a better investment than taking it to some shop where they charge you $100 just to refill the system and tell you about your leak..oh you want to know where its coming from!!? well thats another $100 sir! Yea thanks but no thanks

    If the reading was way off and after removing freon and bringing it to the normal reading the clutch is still not engaging it could be either the relay which you already replaced or the AC pressure switch, if you have a manual for your car you can find out how to test that. Also it could obviously be problems with your compressor/clutch or other components which only an a/c specialist can probably help you with. gl

  • @myRatchets

    If freon is low or there is no freon your ac pressure switch keeps the clutch from engaging and potentially damaging ac parts so thats why you need to engage it manually like I show in the video. But since it sounds like you have absolutely nothing in the system at first try to add freon without engaging the clutch manually so you atleast get some in to provide lubrication than engage it manually. GL

    • @Anonymous-to5sg
      @Anonymous-to5sg 9 лет назад +6

      ArmorOfGod find your AC Compressor. The pulley will be going around something. When your AC is turned on, that thing the pulley is going around is the clutch, if it's moving your clutch is engaged and your AC is working. Same with your AC off, the clutch won't be spinning while the pulley around it is. If your AC is on and the outside of the pulley (your clutch) isn't spinning, it may need to be replaced. Like the video states, check the relay if it's not working. KCCO!

    I have a 2004 toyota Prius Hybrid am the original owner 130.000 miles. My A/C blows hot air. Took it to the dealer they said it was low on freon. added .7#, charged me $504.00. Drove it 6 miles and it was blowing hot air again. took it back and they said it was my A/C command module, and it would cost me $500.++ to replace the computer module. Do you have any experience with this system. I know it is not the same as other cars.

    My freon is low, reads in the white on the guage, clutch is engage consistent ( unless I turn A/C off ) but cant get the car to take in the freon.

    I replaced my condenser, so naturally the compressor won't engage because of no freon in the system. After jumping the relay and the clutch engaged and spinning, and the can connected to the low port, the can won't release any freon. It's as if the system is still closed and not drawing freon from the can.

      A can of R134a does not contain Freon :) They are different products entirely.

      @JasonTylerRicci 6 лет назад

      Indeed. I figured it out anyway. It was the recharge can itself. The Nozzle wasn't pressed in enough to puncture the seal and allow the refrigerant to flow out

    Yes its not the safest for the compressor but in my case and I am going to assume alot of other cases the freon can wasnt strong enough to force enough freon in there to kick start the compressor!

    I turn on my AC and it shuts off about 10-15 minutes later, then I have to hit it with something to make it start turning again. Do I need a new one or can it be fixed while still on my car?

    Hello,
    I have a question.
    I just tried to fix my airco in my Kia Picanto 2012 with one of those simple kits with a can of refrigerant, and a hose with a gauge. (mine did not come with a temperature setting). My airco had just gradually become less cold over the years and now it had completely stopped working.
    I was hoping for a quick fix for now, but it didn't work out so far.
    When I connected the kit with the gauge to the low pressure side, it showed no pressure at all. Then I filled it untill it showed 60 PSI, with the engine and airco on. (was aiming for 50 but gone a bit too far).
    After that I drove around the block and when I drove away, cold air was coming out of the vents, and I thought it was a succes! but.. this only lasted for a very short time, a minute or so. (that doesn't sound too good, right)
    So now the airco still doesn't get cold.
    Now, when I check the pressure on the low pressure side, the gauge shows 60 PSI, engine and airco on, or off, there is no difference. Also, the pipes don't feel cold at all.
    Since it is also showing 60 PSI with the airco and engine off, I'm thinking... maybe there is still not enough pressure, because with the airco off, the pressure should rise far into the red zone... (like 100 PSI) if i'm right?
    Do you think it's worth it to try and get another can of refrigerant, to build up the pressure and see if the airco will actually activate?
    (I can't seem to spot any compressor pulley turning on and off when I turn on and off the airco, everything seems to be turning always, even with the AC button off. But the fan on the front of the car does turn on and off with the AC button.)
    (one more thing. I was too quick to do it, and kind of forgot about the temperature thing. I think it was about 68 degrees fahrenheit here when I filled it.... So according to the temperature/PSI charts, according to that I should have filled it to about max 35 PSI... and I filled it to 60 PSI.... So Im kind of worried that I have destroyed my AC system. But, since it's also showing 60 PSI with the engine and airco off... I doubt this, and start thinking the pressure is actually too low?
    I hoping you could shed some light on this!

    I realize this is a very old post, but how do you know which relay is for the clutch, when you have multiple relays? 1-A/Con, 1 A/con 1, 1 A/Con 1 1A/Con 2? 2009 Kia Sportage 4 cyl

    The refrigerant being used is almost certainly NOT Freon. That form of CFC hasn't been readily available or used for automotive air conditioning systems in decades.

    You don't need to manually lock the clutch to add freon. When enough freon is in the system. The clutch will lockup.

    2011 Honda fit- Ac compressor clutch will not engage. Applied 12 v at relay socket, this will engage the clutch manually. Bench tested relay, applied 12 v and got continuity across the load side. Tested relay socket with multimeter, on load side, 12v available , other pin has continuity to compressor. On trigger side, constant 12v source ( reversed polarity -12v for some reason) whether or not AC switch is on. Tested pressure sensor on Low side of compressor line with multimeter, continuity checked. Tested temperature protection switch at compressor, continuity checked. Tried disconnecting battery on the car for ECU reset, tested all fuses I could think of, FAN, SUB FAN, MG CLUTCH, AC. There are several relays in the actual fuse box which have no labels, unable to test those because I don't know what they do, auxiliary relay box in engine bay contains 3 relays, fan x2 and AC Clutch, applied 12 v all click when voltage is applied.
    Totally lost on what to do next, resistance across the clutch coil is 3 ohms and it works when 12v is directly applied either by battery to clutch or jumping the relay socket.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Those cheap cans with the hose and gauge, they ALL let air and water back into the system. The hose contains some bad stuff. You can't purge those hoses prior to putting the gas in. Don't use those cheap cans.

    I assume you removed the relay and ran power from the battery to the relay terminal and now have to keep it that way for the a/c compressor clutch to be engaged right? 1st test your relay(I have a video on this), or swap it with another good relay see if it works, 2nd check and make sure you didnt overfill your a/c system or if you added enough freon. Your A/C pressure switch will keep your a/c compressor clutch from engaging in that case to minimize damage. GL

    My Dodge Intrepid had the AC go out a couple of years ago, accept... The AC was completely fine, the damper that sends air to the heater was stuck open, and did not allow the air to go through the ac coil, and it also had controller glitches. I had to get it taken in 4 times because they don't make parts for that car anymore. But it cools great now.

    So I think I might have made my compressor problem worse by trying to push AC Pro into the system when the compressor clutch wasn't working. It wasn't until that attempt that I noticed it. Is there a way to tell if the system needs to be evacuated or just an electrical problem (like a bad fuse)?
