seeing old photos is surreal to me, i'm looking around for the diesel locos running the show, but no, those steamers are it, that was their prime, they did everything. if you needed to move around an inactive engine, you did it with another steam engine.

I started as a apprentice Fitter and Turner in 1957 and worked in various locations some demolished now, these include the fitting shop , new erection shop building Harris carriages, tarp shop servicing sewing machines ,brake shop servicing tripple valves ,machine shop operating lathes ,both East wing and West servicing bogies ,I then worked in the engineering test lab making test samples. I spent most of my apprenticeship in the plant shop doing general plant maintenance and working on the overhead cranes which in the West block which were rope driven , now replaced ,the early photo's show the Cranes as the were up until 1967 when I left .I finished my time in the Boiler shop as the maintenance fitter . In those days there were 2500 workers there and I have fond memories of my time there

Thanks for your reply. I actually attended the Newport railway workshop open day in 1986 with my father and brother. It was definitely hard physical labour. I can vividly recall my father telling me that it was extremely dangerous work at times. I can't wait to see the old Newport railway workshop again in 2022. Ill take a look at the old family photo album to see if there are any pictures of dad at work.

@@ivans2768 I'm guessing that if you were a boilermaker, fitter and turner or welder, many would have ended up in the railway workshops - I'm heading to another town with a long history with railways (coincidental) that sadly doesn't have a service anymore that has abandon carriages, station and workshops ... hopefully I'll get there in a few days time !

I think it should also be mentioned that the Williamstown workshops were in a different location, and at times coexisted with the Newport workshops. Newport was however designed to supersede Williamstown.

Open to the public via Shea St Newport - The Steamrail Victoria is a museum of sort and by appointment, you can have a guided tour also - They have working steam engines inside the sheds ... This location is secure with very good security as they have current trains in the area and the training centre for those wanting to work or working in the rail industry ... Further south from this location on Champion Rd towards North Williamston railway station, you'll find another huge museum (Newport Railway Museum) of trains all lined up and also open to the public for a small entry fee. The opportunity for photographing trains of different vintage is excellent as the collect at both museums are the best in the State if not Australia or Australasia - Check out the website in the description and this is the website of the other museum newportrailwaymuseum.org.au/ note: you'll find a video of this other museum in our channel. ruclips.net/video/GuvVylwK9yk/видео.html

not a good idea to say its open the public even if its by appointment, there is a lot of trespassing issues and when channels say its open to the public it doesn't help those problems

    • @urbanaerialexplorer1885
      @urbanaerialexplorer1885  Год назад +1

@@ljsrailwayvideos2370 This might be true however, when I visited staff there didn't mention that and were happy to show me around and it was open to the public ... you might be suggesting it's individuals that come after hours that are causing issues and not during open hours / days or on private tours ... It would be fair to say if a business is closed and the gates are locked it's not open ... When one says the Melbourne Museum is open to the public, the consensus would be only during opening hours !

Not sure why the weird term Newport Railway Yard came from. A yard being just a bunch of tracks to store trains.
Much more significant work performed there historically than just storage.
The term used since the Victorian railways built this is the Newport Railway Workshops.
The Workshops being the key feature as enabling the construction and maintenance of equipment.
As in this 1937 film where the Newport Railway Workshops reached their peak era building the Spirit of Progress :
    ruclips.net/video/sEv7FbglxzE/видео.html
Not much will turn up historically searching for Newport rail yards but a vast amount for Newport Railway Workshops.

@@urbanaerialexplorer1885 one of 536 built at the Newport Railway Workshops.
      From Scienceworks ,:
The first small tank locomotive was built at Newport in 1893. By the end of the steam era sixty years later, some 536 steam locomotives had been produced in addition to hundreds of passenger carriages and thousands of goods trucks. At its peak the Newport Workshops employed over 5,000 people and was the largest industrial complex in the State.
No mention of Newport rail yards. First used by sloppy interested TV presenters and the like but sadly catching on
