From January 1950 until about June of that year my folks lived at Rockbank as we had just spent 6 weeks at sea from the U,K. We were to live on a property owned by Mr Bill Cockbill. The house (I think bluestone construction) seemed to be in a direct line from the school, but a long way away from it. It was the first school that I attended and so much was strange. My sister and I walked over the paddocks to get to the school, crossing the railway line on the way. I was very interested in railways and enjoyed seeing the Overland from Adelaide come flying past. We also saw many coal trains heading for Melbourne. Although only six months, the area made a big impression on me. In June we moved to Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula. I have quite a few memories of Rock Bank.

Sorry, memory fade, 50 plus years ago, platform 1 booking office would also open during weekday morning peak hours when trains from the Frankston line would go through there. The brick building on the island platform, between the new disabled toilet and the end of the platform, used to be the male toilet with the entrance door at the disabled toilet end, the door towards the end of the building was a store room. I don't know what it is used for now. Coming from the Frankston/Dandenong end, the main station building on the island platform contained the Ladies toilets that were accessed from the Ladies Waiting Room, the Ladies Waiting Room had doors either side of the building with doors that could be closed. Next was a waiting room which was open on both sides. Then there was doors both sides of the building into a foyer with the Station Masters office one side of the foyer and the station staff locker room the other side. The station staff locker room is now the waiting room at the top of the ramp.

I worked at Caulfield Station in the first half of the 70's. The shop in the subway was the main booking office and was called the centre booking office. From the centre booking office, tickets were sold to all Melbourne & Victorian destinations and to major interstate destinations. There were 2 booking clerks on duty for most of the hours the booking office was open which was from first train in the morning to last train at night. The booking office on platform 1 only opened on race days. In those days there were race specials every race day. The booking office on platform 4, which was also the parcels office, sold tickets to Dandenong, Gippsland & South Gippsland line destinations. The platform 4 booking office would open during weekday peak hours and during off peaks & Saturdays it would open 20 to 30 minutes prior to the passage of a Gippsland or South Gippsland train.

Or maybe a train enthusiast, who just wanted his own train set, but either run out of money to complete the concept , or became gravely ill and not able to finish the job, In other rural settings you may come across old W class trams who have suffered the same fate, ! People buy them as a holiday rental etc, but because of other issues in there lives , never get the trams completed to live in, I know of a VR railmotor that’s under a carport type of covering on the back roads near Barfold in central Victoria, it’s been there for 40 + years I know of and looks very derelict, cheers from Downunder 🦘🦘🦘❤️🇦🇺

the 3rd car was a hitachi car. it dates from the 1970's. the first car dates from the early 1900's or 1910's. it was for country journeys. it has compartments, a corridor and toilets, one at either end. they were my favourites for country journeys. you rarely shared a compartment with strangers. the second car is special. first introduced in 1888, i think, they had swing doors and compartments and intended for country journeys. but no toilets. later on some were turned into corridor cars. in the 1910's, most of these were lengthened and became the dog box electric trains. they were my favourite trains. they stopped being used around 1973, were sent to north of ballarat and burnt. a few survived and ended up on farms. there was a restored dog box train at newport workshops but were deliberately burnt to the ground in 2015. of these carriages in their original size though probably stripped out for use as workman's sleepers, there is one on tracks at east ballarat yard, and another at mornington railway, neither are under cover. this car needs to be saved, whatever the condition. i note that some of the bogies near it have timber in the construction. they will be original. i have seen these 2 cars in this video on another video a while ago. i have a fair idea what area they are in. i'd love to steal the swing door car but it wont fit in my backyard.

Thanks great info and show from what you had to put up. Your drown take off never panned to right or behind to show where we were, BTW. No pics of inside the market available. That would have been even more interesting. Same with the Fish Market nearby, demolished a bit earlier, but there were some pics of inside as it had its own rail siding, but again nothing of the operation inside which would have been fascinating. Not much about the Eastern market, gone much earlier, maybe a few exterior shots, history missed. Thanks anyway, enjoyed, a bit long though.

The Misery Creek Bridge collapsed during the September 2016 floods with most of it being washed down stream. Only a portion remains.

i knew this area well 50 years ago. there used to be very classy but run down buildings along some of the old gold-era coach roads. there are a lot of old coach roads in this area. you can tell they were coach roads because the roads would veer around large trees instead of going straight. there was a 2 storey building along this road you are on that i used to wish that one day i had the time and money to restore it. i assumed it was doomed to be wrecked by time or bushfires. however it was the star of a 'restoration australia' episode. it looked a treat when it was finished.

Woohoo. Good video. Near(ish) my home (about 20 kms away). Yes it was an old store AND hotel. Marvellous how someone has restored that building to a home from that old ruined building in your photo. Thats always great to see. Slight correction : it’s not on the Midland Highway (Wikipedia is not always correct). That’s about 4 km back and travels between Daylesford and Castlemaine. You turn off it. Franklinford is on the C285 or Newstead road (as we call it). PS: the general store in Newstead does great burgers and bacon, egg and toast breakkies old style. Cheap, big serves but no fancy fuss.

Newstead would be one of my favorites if I ever intended to make a permanent country lifestyle change ... Just as a heads up, my drama free, easy to maintain and ever reliable ute has been sold to a chap in Mildura - It will still pop up from time to time as I have a backlog of videos to last out the year ... I'm buzzing off to Europe on the 19th Oct - 1st Dec but there will be a video every Friday at 6:00am and a few on Monday's too ... I'll be online the whole time away and getting footage of what I got up to in Europe for next year.

@@urbanaerialexplorer1885 It also has one of the top 3 butchers in Victoria (imo). It’s a lovely town. Popular with campers and caravaners as it has free camping/caravan (or low cost anyway) at the reserve and showers and toilets for use as well. Yes the old school was converted in to a community centre.
