  • Discover the Wild West's untamed spirit in our video on Joshua Tree's Lost Horse Mine, Desert Queen Mine, and Eagle Cliff Mine. Unearth captivating stories and stunning scenery. Watch now and step back in time!
    The Lost Horse Mine, located in Joshua Tree National Park, is one of the most well-preserved mining sites in the area. Established in the late 19th century, it was discovered by Johnny Lang in 1893. Lang stumbled upon the mine while tracking down a group of cattle rustlers and soon realized its potential for gold extraction. The mine quickly became one of the most productive in the region, yielding over 10,000 ounces of gold and 16,000 ounces of silver over its 20-year operational span. Today, visitors to Joshua Tree can hike to the Lost Horse Mine and see the remnants of the old machinery and the mine itself, offering a glimpse into the area's rich mining history.
    The Desert Queen Mine, also within Joshua Tree National Park, has a history intertwined with the colorful characters of the Old West. Founded by Bill Keys in the early 20th century, the mine was notable not just for its production but also for the stories of the people who worked there. Bill Keys himself was a legendary figure, known for his various enterprises and his involvement in local disputes. The mine produced significant amounts of gold and silver before eventually being abandoned. Today, the Desert Queen Mine stands as a testament to the rugged and often tumultuous life of miners in the harsh desert environment.
    Eagle Cliff Mine, though less famous than the Lost Horse and Desert Queen Mines, holds its own unique place in Joshua Tree’s mining history. Nestled in the rocky outcrops of the park, the mine is less accessible, which adds to its mystique. It was primarily a small-scale operation compared to its more prolific neighbors, but it still played a role in the area's mining activities. The site features a well-preserved cabin and other structures that give visitors a sense of the isolation and hard work experienced by the miners who once toiled there. Hiking to Eagle Cliff Mine offers a more secluded experience, providing an intimate look at the life of early 20th-century desert miners.

    The Lost Horse Mine brings back memories. My late mother in law was with us up to the mine and we ate 'lunch' on the ridge just behind the mine.

    I met old man KEYS in the mid 1960 he had a house in the monument. He was quite a character. He had gold that he had taken out of his mine. He had a bunch of hippies hang around his property. I would go out to Joshua tree every thanksgiving with the family we would go bouldering all over the park. Lot of history always a good time as a kid.

    Thanks Glenn for your effort to show us this area of Joshua Tree NP. I have a neighbor in the apartment that lived in California during the 60s and I've been telling him about your series on Joshua Tree. He told me he and his friends camped there and had a good time. He said at the time, they could camp anywhere in that area. He also remembered Gram Parsons. Thanks again Glenn. Great job!

    I’ve been to Joshua tree once and I thought it really interesting but I did not know that there were mines like you’re showing us so thank you very much. I love all the rock formations that are around that area too. It is just awesome to look at.

      Joshua Tree is iconic and named aptly for the trees out there so it's easy to not know about the other history. I can't say I knew about a lot of it years ago either. 😅

    Wow, I started to get worried about you there at the end! That heat is so brutal. But thanks for being our eyes and ears (and legs) on this trek in the beautiful park. What an experience for you to be able to go in the rock house and just imagine living there in that small hole, cooking over the small fireplace etc. Thanks for sharing with us!

    That thing marked 'chicago pneumatic' is an old air compressor. I'm not saying I'm old but, back when my brother and I were exploring that area you could drive to most of the mines. If you had a 4X4 vehicle. Good video. Thanks, I enjoyed it.

    The tanks at mine #1 may have held cyanide. It was used to separate the gold from the rock. The gizmo at mine #2 that says Chicago Pneumatic is probably an air compressor; pneumatic means air. It may have been used to blow fresh air in the mines or to power a drill. The wheels on it were where flat belts were attached to turn those wheels and power the piston to blow air. Good video!

    What you thought were “ Metal wheels” in the third miner’s rock cabin were the metal rings used to hold wooden barrels together. You can still see the curved barrel pieces that ran vertically with the rings . That was a Cool video buddy . Stay safe & thanks as always for posting what you do 😎👍

    Well, well. Frank James? Frank and Jesse were brothers. If he was the right Frank. If not? I frankly don't care. 😊. Maybe he lived in that rock house. I heard through the wonderhussy that it was occupied by an outlaw that didn't want to be found. That air compressor was probably hooked up to a pressure tank and would have delivered air to the miners for the drills and air for the mill. Good to see you still got Slim. Every time you said auto, I thought for sure, his days were numbered.😊

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  Месяц назад +2

      Not sure if he's the brother, but I saw no mention of Jesse so I'm guessing just another guy with same name..? I'll have to watch Wonderhussy's video. I probably saw it once, but just plain forgot. 😂
