In order to practice Aikido we most learn how to take soft flowing falls or "Ukemi" to be able to protect ourselves and to redirect the energy that is taking us down as the power that will bring us back up. Learning to relax the body and develop flexibility are keys in order to take smooth falls in Aikido.

Contracting the body, breathing and knowing the other leg automatically lands after the other are critical points to remember. Thank you Sensei.

Sensei! I don’t know if you still check this but I have a critical problem with my mad ukemi. I always it my backside close to my back ribs and it hurts horribly. What can I do?

legs extended on a hard surface (no mat) will surely give injuries. My experience, roll in a ball, diagonally, legs as shown initially is the right way.

yeah, doesn't matter how good you are, it hurts to do it on concrete. . : )

Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing you. The point of ukemi is to save your limbs from damage but your body can still absorb the impact and it still hurts. :)

We used too practice techniques on gym floors in the early 80's to teach us how to correct our falls.
