Carve a Walking Stick, woodcarving

- Carved a beautiful walking stick out of maple, butternut and cedar for the staff. Made a rams skull and horns. Using saws, files, rotary tools/burrs and a lot of sanding, ended up with a lightweight walking stick.
Made the spiral for the horns from a branch of butternut that I had leftover from a previous build. The maple for the skull was from a firewood log, it was tough to cut through but the Kutzall burrs made the job of carving it much easier.
The finish is Teak oil and the skull got 2 coats of polyurethane.
Let me know your thoughts on the carving and look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks for watching.
Awesomeness lot of detail, came out great.
Yes, I liked how it all came together. Glad you enjoyed the build!!
Hola amigo te saludo desde Extremadura que es España un buen trabajo

Great job. Excellent craftsmanship. I'm always fascinated by the artistic skills.
Thank you so much! Happy you liked it!!
Just beautiful! I love the detail on the ram horns and the different woods go together nicely. Great job Jason, now I have to go watch the rest of your channel.❤
Thank you!! Yes, this one a bit more complex but came together very well. Thank you for your support!
You never cease to amaze me thanks for another excellent Video 👍🏴
great to hear, thank you!!!
You definitely have a gift. You remind me a lot of my uncle and he did a lot of carvings in Antlers one of the only memories I have of his artwork was in a pair of ram horns it was amazing. Your work is awesome and definitely inspires me to try something this complex. My skill level is nowhere near yours but I hope one day I can be close to it. Thanks for the video can't wait for the next one.
Thank you very much for sharing that memory! Happy to hear that you liked it. I appreciate the support
👀👍❤️🇨🇦beautyful,,,,,,,lové what you made ,,,👍
Thank you!
thank you for getting back with me !!!!!!!!!!!!!
No problem!
That is a Beautiful stick
Thank you
Follow your inspiration, I'll be here. Love your work man.
Thank you very much! Great to hear
Like the ram like the way you carved , but me myself hate to join wood together . I work with solid one piece sticks. I’ve picked up when I got up the mountains. HAVE YOU WATCH STINNETT STICKS , to me he’s is one of the best carvers ever this man it good. In my opinion like to watch him as well I’ve learned lots by watching him
@@carlosesquivel1314 glad you liked the video. Yes, I watch Mikes carvings, he is one of the best in the business!
Great work on the horns and everything else.
Thank you! I appreciate it

Great to hear! Thank you!
You have talent man! This is a piece of art.
Thank you so much! I appreciate it
that is amazing. Love your creativity. I am inspired to try something like this. thanks for sharing Jason
You can certainly do it! Took a bit longer to make but its certainly achievable! Thank you for watching
@Jason Hedrich the way you crafted the horns is amazing. I wouldn't have thought of that at all but worked out great. And the natural wood contrast is spot on.
@@rumpple4skin976 thanks, yes I like the way the horns came out. I've made spirals before from sticks and it seemed like the obvious way to make the horns. Also it allows you to use handy material instead of gluing up a large block to start with.
@Jason Hedrich yes it comes out smoothly
Beautiful work! You make me want to carve, right now 😉
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching
These horns are awesome, I'm gonna try making a snake, just need to find the right branch 😁
@@GOMacDUB a snake would be great, and can be done the same way as the horns! Let me know how it turns out
Awesome! You made Skeletors Staff! 😀😅🤣
Lol, I hadn’t thought about it like that, but now I can see it
that is so brilliant and beautiful work mate
Thank you!!! Very happy to hear that you liked it. Thanks for your support
Decided to subscribe after seeing the short video of this stick this morning. Glad I got to see the full build. I'll be sure to check out some of your other pieces.
Great to hear! Hope you enjoy them
Looks great
Thank you!
I like it
Great to hear! Thanks
Perfect!
Thanks! I liked how this one came together
very nice
thank you!
I like both styles but of the two I'd take the skull one first. But really I would like to see the animal it's self as a carving like a shepherd's crook. I'm a Brit and have seen many crooks with all sorts of things carved into them. Pheasants, dogs and of course sheep. I've also seen birds and cattle too.
Some great ideas! Thanks, I will keep those in mind for the next projects
Me encanto tu trabajo jason. Gracias x enseñarnos tu trabajo. Yo estoy empezando el mundo del tallado y me gusta aprender retos nuevos. Espero llegar a tu nivel pronto. Gracias 😊
Jason, great to see another great video.
(excuse my term) This is a Bad Ass walking stick. I love it! Very beautifully crafted. I've got to try this forsure. Thank you 😊
Always good to hear from you! Glad you liked it. I liked this one too, a fun carving. Thank you for your kind words
Very nice Jason.
Thanks! I enjoyed this one! A fun carving
I like it!!!!
Great to hear! Thanks for watching
Thats fantastic 😀 I will have a look to see if I can do that 😀 😉
Thanks. Let me know how yours turns out!
THE HORNS ARE WONDERFUL. THE SKULL CAME OUT NICE AND LIGHT FOR CONTRAST. THE STICK IS A BIT BIG FOR MY TASTES, BUT IT IS OBVIOUSLY A MAN'S STICK. A VERY NICE PIECE! THO, I DON'T SUPPOSE YOU CAN LEAN ON THE TOP OF IT?
Thank you very much! I appreciate it. The stick is cedar so very lightweight.
I LOVE your project, great technique as well. What might the effects of a sanding sealer have been on the skull? Would it have controlled the color in a way you would have wanted it to? Come to think of it, if you wanted the skull to look like bleached bones, could you used a clear oil, such as mineral oil so the wood could retain it's whiter color???? just a thought! Thanks for your video, and sharing your knowledge and skill.
Thank you! I just put a coat of oil on the wood but it does yellow it a bit... not sure about the sanding sealer, I never used it so its tough to guess what the effect would be. Maybe a bleached white stain might have kept it more white. Either way the contrast is there so I liked how it turned out.
@@JasonHedrich true enough, I'm inspired and want to try something like that myself. By the way, I thought it was very interesting the way you made the horns!!!!
@@tomboese367 glad you liked it. It just seemed like the easiest way to carve the horns...
WOW Jason. You out did yourself on this one. Good job on this one. A lot of work. It turned out great for Cedar. I hope that whom ever got it enjoys it. I am still looking for a foot that is over 3 inches in diameter. I might have to make it out of an old bicycle tire and some heat. What do you think Jason?
Thank you, yes it did turn out pretty good! No one ordered it, just made it for the fun of it... let me know if you know anyone interested. Have you tried looking for rubber feet for canes or crutches (maybe those would be big enough)...
I love your videos, would you use a steel wool polish with a polyurethene finish? I used it with Tung oil and it came out well (on your recommendation).
Yes, you have to watch out using steel wool with any water based finish... Any residual piece will form rust and ruin your carving.
Hello. Amazing job. What kind of oil do you applied to the stick? Thanks very much
Thank you very much! I mostly use Teak oil on the sticks… but Danish oil or Linseed oil will work as well
do you ever use flat boards that you glue together for carvings ?????????????
For the larger carvings, I have laminated a few boards together to carve. It works well if the boards are flat and the seams are tight. I don’t get a chance too often to make large carvings however, but it does work.
لاتصنع عصا عليها رأس اوجسد حيوان لم التكلف ثانيا اتقصد بها رأس الحمار بافومت الا لعنة الله على الظالمين
Many people like the look of an animal carving on their walking sticks… it also gives me a chance to practice my carving skills. Thanks for watching
@@JasonHedrich sank you ولكن يفضل عدم صنع راس او جسد حيوان وفقا للدين الاسلامى وشكرا جزيلا لزوقك
Потрясающая работа❤
Thank you
Ill certainly give ya a like. Lost me on "walking stick" when it became sectional. Thats more of a staff and decorative. Of course my opinion of a walking stick is functional during hikes with some art if so inclined.
Thanks! It still can be used as a hiking stick... A little fancier but still works fine for its intended use.
