Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the war that followed has left tens of thousands of victims in its wake, and caused the destruction of large cities in Ukraine, the forced migration of millions of people out of the country, and a global energy and food crisis. Ukraine and the West will never be the same; the relations between the West and Russia will remain broken for decades to come. But behind its propaganda wall, Russia is also being transformed. In conversation with IWM Rector MISHA GLENNY, exiled Russian security expert and investigative journalist ANDREI SOLDATOV revealed the strategies and recent tactics of the Putin regime’s internal war on its own citizens’ individual freedoms.
Andrei Soldatov is a Russian investigative journalist and Russian security services expert. Together with fellow journalist Irina Borogan he is co-founder and editor of the Agentura.Ru website. Their books include New patriot games. How secret services have been changing their skin 1991-2004 (2005), The New Nobility: The Restoration of Russia's Security State and the Enduring Legacy of the KGB (2010) and The Red Web: The Struggle Between Russia's Digital Dictators and the New Online Revolutionaries (2015). Soldarov is head of the “Russia's Surveillance State” project, which aims to undertake research into surveillance practices in Russia.
