  • The Himalaya is the largest and highest mountain system on the earth extending over 2500km in length and 300km in width with tremendous variation in topography and climate.
The number of plant species in the Himalaya is estimated at 25,000 - 10% of the world’s known species and 50% of india’s endemic flora.
The Himalayan region has been divided on the basis of climatic conditions into three fairly distinct regions. The Eastern Himalayan region extending from the Arun Valley in east Nepal to the Mishmi Hills in Arunachal Pradesh. The Central Himalayan region which includes Nepal and Eastern Uttar Pradesh and the Western Himalayan region which include Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and the Garhwal and Kumaon Hills.
Numerous remote valleys in Himalaya are still untouched & have not been studied specifically for ecosystem services. However, global warming, extensive grazing, habitat loses, carelessness are certain factors that are affecting the bio-diversity & increasing the number of endangered species of the region. Documentation of traditional knowledge, intellectual property rights of locals, trainings on sustainable use of resources & use of traditional knowledge for conservation are some ways in which we can save the heritage of Himalaya for generations to come.
