Mazda RX8 Series 1 vs Series 2 Comparison

- Today we compare my 2007 mazda rx8 series 1 with a series 2 from 2009. We talk about the differences, take them for a drive, drag race them, and shoot some flames. Basically came down to if you want to modify it, series 1. If you want reliability, series 2. Had a lot of fun making this video so hopefully you enjoy it! Let me know if you enjoyed it by leaving a like and subscribing, I will see you in the next one.
Finally, someone got there hands on a series 2 Gt! Now, let's find an R3 version and do a comparison
If anyone is reading this and has an R3 in the Philadelphia area (ish) and is interested in meeting up for a video please let me know!
@@JapandaTuning if you come down to Florida anytime i have one lol😅
The only difference the r3 has is better suspention and different seats along with a few bumber differnces eventhing else performamce wise is the same as the other s2's
@@Baaang360 Raites rides is looking to review one, hit him up
mazda man 09 mine isn’t stock tho🤷🏼♂️
Series 2 looks like every typical 2009 car
but series 1 got that japanese 2000s look and thats the big plus
so series 1 wins for me just cuz of the look of racing japanese car
Kuba best comment of 2019 🙌👏
Same for me, there were some better looking s2's though
just in this video ...
...without mazdaspeed bumper and spoiler and eyebrows and oem rims and compare it with the UK v. R3 ...
Yeah but it also is more fragile
Couldn't agree more, the series 2 looks a little blah until you go aftermarket. The series 1 looks yes right out the gate.
I used to own a 2006 series 1, let it go for a 2008 WRX-S. Missed it so much that I got myself a 2011 r3. No regrets. I find both the series 1 and r3 are reliable, as long as you know how to take care of it and it will take care of you. Cheers
i have both. They're fun to drive but the series 2 has better stock handling in my opinion. Series 1 has more aftermarket support tho. So i like to keep it as a project car and daily my S2
Do you still have them? Do they work?
In Europe, S2 do have a rear fog light shaped rotor on the back bumper like the s1
I like both versions, but if I was to get an RX-8, I'll get the Series 2, specifically the R3. It looks much better than a stock Series 2 and they'll last a little longer than the Series 1 engine wise. Other than that, the RX-8 in general is really awesome, a truly underrated sports car
I have owned both and hands down the series 2 feels more defined overall and is more reliable.
I have a Series 2 at 120,000 Miles, Engine Compression way about 6, still average 300miles on a full tank. so far so good
Series 1 is my favorite 😂🖤
✊🏾
Yea same I think series one looks better it kinda looks like there was more love put into the bodywork
Yes but series 2 removes most of the problems in the series 1
S1 FTW!
The rear bumpers are dif as well. Series 1 is a lot aggressive
warming up the engine just lost half a tank 😂
And some compression, Apex seals and half the oil.
Idle consumes 1.7 liters per hour, if u'r warming up your car for 36-37 hours - maybe
That tan my boy with the s2 has tho 😂
I have a series 1 shinka and love it, series 1 body style is way better imo, looks meaner where series 2 kinda just blended in with the rest of the Mazda line, but the reliability additions are nice
S2 looks like a Mazda 3 and your S1 looks like it has the same DNA as the FD RX7 (which it does). Only S2 I would consider is a Spirit R (good luck) or an R3 GT with stock Recaros. If you upgrade the S1 with the extra oil cooler, the beefed up starter motor (14 tooth 2.0kw), 4.77 gears, and the Recaros there's literally no reason to go with the ugly ass base S2 model.
I heard (this could be complete nonsense) that the S1 engines were mostly hand built where-as the S2 motors started to introduce efficiencies (aka machines) in production so some S1 engines are naturally more balanced and durable.
Amen, the s2 doesn't hit the same as the s1. Even with the extra chassis rigidity and quality improvements.
Unless you like the s1 better, just get the s2 if you can. Get the s1 for engine swaps (they better be rotary swaps) or get the s1 for the styling. I personally like the s1 looks better and that's why I own one, also it was a lot cheaper than the only s2 in my area at the time.
I like the S1 over the S2 even though the S2 has mechanical upgrades and suspension bits. The S1 facia does it for me.
Series one has led’s in the tail lights too, but there are only 2 per side and they’re tiny lol
Professional drivers on a closed course. Yeah, use to say that on my videos also
Been waiting on this video for so long
The face he made at 2:00 after the turn signal question needs to become a meme 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Both have the Aisin AZ6 transmission, just with different ratios. The series 2 has closer ratios, so when you change up at high revs, the speed difference between the two gears is less, allowing it to appear to be smoother, however, you won't be able to tell the difference if you put mobil 1 full synthetic race transmission oil in them.
Series 2 has some upgraded components such as the transmission forks that also aid in the smoother feeling of the transmission
Your mic needs to be updated to a series 2 haha! Thanks man, great video.. i just left a deposit on a black series 2 and will hopefully puck it up from the dealer this week sometime!
To be fair both cars need to have the same equipment. If one's modified it only makes sense it will win! I'll take the series 2... only because I have a 2009 R3 I just purchased last week. :)
They key probably depends on the year. My 04 has a key with a separate remote.
I think the switchblade key became standard starting with the 2005 year
@@poncho828 heh, in that case I wouldnt know hahahaha
@@Insolent_JDNLC I believe you can still buy the switchblade key and get it programmed by a locksmith.
Same
The thing about your second gear having something wrong with it - probably something similar that's wrong with my Mazda 3's gearbox: worn synchros requiring rather exact rev matching when putting the gear in and a tendency for the box to 'stick' in high rev while taking it out of gear. Having the right kind of gear lube helps the issue. The 'fix' would be having it rebuilt with upgraded components.
Series 2 also has a 4.77 final drive vs series 1's 4.44. The gearing changes from a series 2 really liven up a series 1 when swapped.
I now know what my next mod is
Final drive in the trans or the rear diff?
@@Ozem_Israel diff
I really like the way the 1 looks. The 2 is all right I guess but it doesn’t really look as sporty. Just my opinion though
I like the series 1. The series 2 is a bit more reliable because of the extra OMP port in the middle. However, if you premix the S2 is not any more reliable.
I'm 4 months late, but you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about. That's ricer talk.
You're wrong. The series 2 is way more reliable I've owned both, mazda made lots of improvements.
The only improvement to the engine was the extra OMP port on the housing. The fact remains, the series 2 is still a rotary and still has the same types of failure. S1 engine life can be just as good with premixing.
Bro this thing is over a year old but the fact you said this angered me enough to tell you that I premix my 09 rx8 with 5w-30 and it’s currently at 132k feeling fine defuq you talking aboot
@@Newt5312 So passionate! I like that. Yes, you can premix the series 2 all my point was that it isn’t as effective in a series 2 as it is in a series 1. I hope you don’t mean 5w-30 oil in the gas tank.
I have a 2004 series 1 Touring, black with black and red leather. Absolutely love it. Just passed 70k, never been touched though I think the seals are starting to show some wear. I have the same 1st to 2nd issue too. Absolutely blast to drive.
Series 1 headlights had a carbon fiber eyelid cover to make the headlight appear sleeker
I owned the seris 1 for 8 years and loved the car. Got rid of it for two reasons, worried the engine was going to fail and the gas mileage of 12 MPG just did not cut it as a daily driver. For looks the RX-8 S1 all the way, the S2 was your typical mid model changes to make it look different at the expense of the way the original designers made it. From a mechanical stand point that 3rd oil injector was added to save the engine, it was set up that way on the Rx-7 but they changed it to two for emission reasons on the 8, bad move. There are a lot of small mechanical improvements on teh S2 that made it a more reliable car. They also put in different sized rear axles in the S2 to control wheel hope at take off. If you ever buy one the first thing you do is pic up the Yukon coil pack kit because the OEMs are way too weak and fail at around 30K miles usually taking out the catalytic convert at the same time. Another good mod is a water injector to keep the carbon build up down.
Good to know. I want an S1 because that's what I want but not opposed to an S2 kudos.
It's your second gear syncro going bad.
Yeah they have the exact same transmission
Clearly lol.
@@victord.3197 Not everyone realizes the issue so I thought I'd be nice, and they are getting harder to find for this model once parts get hard to find I'm gonna be forced to swap Wankel parts are getting stupid expensive anymore and it's starting not to be worth it sadly.
Not only because I own one, but series 1 all day. Even looks better.
I liked the styling of series 2. It's alot like the restyling honda made with the S2000.
series one i like the sound of it and the looks better then the series 2, anyone else happen to find this in there recommended?
You can tune the series 2 it's just done with mazdaedit, I had a guy from the east coast tune mine
Did you see any power gains? I wanna do it to my 09, I actually bought from the guy in this video haha
i own series 1 as well and i like it better than series 2
I would honestly own an rx8 if the fuel economy wasn't so poor on them. If i had to get one I would get an S2 because reliability. Since i'm already paying at the pump i wanna pay less for repairs.
One word. LPG.
It extends engine lige because no carbon deposits
mpg isnt that bad as long as you keep rpms low. like 25 mpg highway
@@bojanbozic1542 Hi what is LPG? Thanks im thinking high octane fuel?
How do I know which series I have? I have a 2009 rx8
You have s2 buddy
The biggest difference between them is the Series 2 is infinitely more reliable than the Series 1
Major League Food Gaming how is it more reliable?
My series 2 has 113000 miles on the original engine and is still going strong. It's more reliable because they added 2 more oil injectors to the engine and because they limit the red line until the engine warms up. Many of the series 1 engines blew apex seals because people would redline them before the engine warmed up.
Blue Corsair my series 1 made it to 138xxx miles 223xxxkms before i shut it down hot and ruined an apex seal. It was still running strong until then 👍🏼
True about the extra oil feed lines (1 extra per rotor housing) and 1 extra metering pump, but I was and still am premixing anyways so it’s kinda not that relevant, also my OMP is injecting more oil than stock..
Also set my rev limiter when cold to 5000 and when nominal, 9500. I never revved my engine past 5K when cold, even before the rebuild.. negligence to any engine can result in failure..
Thanks for your reply btw!
1 oil injector doesn’t do much if you don’t premix. Not infinite lol.
You don't need to premix on a series 2, period.
Not because I have a Series 1..but ..the 1 is wayyyyy nicer.... but series 2 is nice if you drop them and put a kit..
Series. 1 looks better more cooler more faster even tho I have a mazda too
That throttle response might you experience could be those big ass 19 inch wheels they put on the series 2.
They only put the 19s on the R3 the others got 18s but they are heavier then those enkeis for sure, also he installed a lightened flywheel from what I remeber... plus the tune
Series 2 LED lights, electric OMP, 3 Oil injectors, front end changes, tranny changed and rear diff upgraded. S2 is more tame and refined vs s1z. Also the trackon control is better on S2.
In my opinion S1 is better for a Gear wrenches, it allows more tweaking and Tuning and Modding and better reliability improvements. Best improvements can be had by swapping the rear diff with a S2 but need axels and hubs I believe as well.
S2 is for that kid who dont know wtf there doing, no reliability improvements can be made on OMP such as sohn.A. but has 3 injectors and electric OMP. Bad thing is stuck to premature oil changes to prevent O. injector failure. Be sure to run your oil with seafoam.
I love my 05
Hi there, I am hesitating between an 2004 S1 with 148000km at 8000$ Canadian and an S2 2010 with 47000km at 12000$. which one should I take, consider the 2 are nice looking and well looked after....the s1 has original engine though?
@@DustyPearl-13 the s2
@@mflbikes1870 Thank you!
That's why I can't find a good running rx8 anywhere around.
All you idiots out there think Mazda built a rotary race engine. They did not!....the Renesis was built on the cheap and Mazda had to compromise and just settle for and hope like hell that only old n slow Grandma's would ever drive ALL Rx8's.
Keep in mind the drag race wasn't really fair he said he had a tune on his ecu and the gen 2 is stock
Yeah The Base 💪🏽Mazda Rx-8 Is more Tokyo Dift 🏈💯
The series 1 looks much better imo
The clutch isnt an issue its the syncro, google for "Rx8 Syncro Saver" in Spain we been using them for a long time ago.
@ISitOn MyArm Also, have you change your gear oil ? Make sure it's a GL-4 and not a GL-5 compatible with GL-4
Yesssir Series 2 all the way... Mike this is Jason
Here's a question. Can you take an S1 rear bumper and put it on an S2? Going to look at an S2 this weekend and I'm probably gonna get it but everything I looked at fot an RX8 before finding this S2, I had planned for an S1. I do plan on doing an S1 front end conversion and already have a rough idea of what I need for that but I cant find any info on the reae bumper.
Series 1 final drive is 4.4 series 2 is 4.7... if both engines were the same, the 4.7 will accelerate faster
Series 1 all day
I have eather 1 or 2 but it looks way different then the 2 cars shown, first of all my turn signal is clipped on between side wing and front bumper on both side, the bumper is bigger and has larger holes for all radiators, rear wing is similar to silver rx8 but myn is bit wider and longer, also headlights are more round... it's a 2008 192ps base model a27 paint
You can ecu tune an s2 versatuner offers a tunning platform a bit like the cobb for the series1 for them
But the information is so scarce... practically no one knows anything about it😅
@@mihai733 yea thats true its pretty decent though ive made a decent tune to suit my mods and it works great much better than the standard tune by quite alot
And the cobbs for the rx8 got discontinued and are getting harder to find and more expensive :/
Series 1 is OG. ALL DAY
I personally like the s2 more just because it looks more aggressive
Yeah from the front the body going over the tires ❤️
My 05 has the led tail lights as well. I think some of the stuff is optional.
Some people change out their series 1 taillights with series 2 taillights. The led taillights came out with the series 2
@@poncho828 Oh, I see. The right one still has the moisture issue.
@@skylerbond56 it's an easy fix just check the rx8 forums
I thought the gearbox is the same and Mazda only changed the rear differential to shorter?
I like more series 1
Series 1 all the way i love mine
Recorded in Mexico ;)
I loved everything about the interior and exterior about the s1 except tail lights.
I have a series one that’s got leather like a series 2 modern gages and all that but it’s a 04
Series one %100
Very very good.
Series 1's gauges (rpm and heat gauges) looks better then series 2.
rx 8 type S and type E compare?
S1 looks better but s2 is more reliable
I like the head lights of the searies 2 better. It has more personality. When its stock. You have those after market angry eyes XD buts its ok if its your thing.
Is it easy to convert the look of a s2 to s1? would we need the headlights, fenders and bumper from an s1 to make the conversion?
Hey. What rear wing is that on the series 1?
Can you put a series 2 front end on a series 1?
My question is can I put the front and back bumper of the rx8 2 on the 1
Yes
But you will need the s2 front fenders and headlight's
I feel like the series 1 just looks nicer
IMO, the series 1 looks much better.
Iv an 04 s1 and love it
Hey I have a 2007 amd someone told me it wasn't a series 1 can you confirm that mine is a series 1
Damn it... I want one so bad even more now. But that dying engine, only to be revived to kill itself again. Already had/have a car that does that, and it isn't nearly as fun.
I wanna start learning how to drive a manual and I buy a rx-8
Series 2 for me... But only in R3 trim
6:27 I have the same issue with my fourth gear have you figured it out
First is base vs gt. My buddy has an 06 gt with the card thing.
Am thinking of putting an Rx8 enjine on my 1974 Rx4 coupe. What do you guy's think ??
Your better off putting an fc engine in it.

I had a RX8 RS series 2 and until today except the appearance... I still don't know what are the difference 😂🤣
Is his series 1 front bumper stock?
Do you get any vibration from the gear shifter? I was test driving one the other day and it was shaking a bit. Is that normal? Also it was a bit rough in first...not sure if its because it was sitting or not.... Just wondering before I decide to buy it
SpaceFleming it’s normal for it to shake some because the engine is sitting so far back, I’ve owned one for 4 years now and it’s always done that and never had a problem. If it shakes a lot though, might need motor mounts replaced
yes its normal
