*R.I.P. Rémy Julienne 1930-2021* Don't expect me to upload the car chases from Bullitt, The French Connection, or any of the big ones! This is an exception, due to this sequence not coming from a really "big" movie. I kinda don't wanna risk losing this channel. ;-)
An absolute classic! It's right up there with the Burglers and Tony Arzenta. An era that's forever lost door handle to door handle full tilt metal crunching oil burning one take situations. For me the 1970s European movie chases are unpolished and gritty that makes them so special.
When I first saw this car chase, about 15 years ago, I laughed so hard I cried. I am big into 1957/58 Plymouths so when the 58 Plymouth 2 door turns into a 1960 dodge 4 door with plywood fins ... well it is really funny to me because the cars are not even close to resembling each other. Thanks to E-bay I bought my own copy very soon after. Thankyou for posting this clip!
I have a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere 2 door hardtop and a convertible, both sitting in my driveway and I'm glad they chose to bash the Dodge for the most part. The high speed driving in the Plymouth conveys the actual feel of the cars better than any film I've seen. I've had almost a dozen '57 and '58 Plymouths including Fury's. Driven at 125+ mph they feel incredibly good. I also had a 1960 Dodge Phoenix 2 dr hardtop years back, it was okay, but I love the Plymouths. I just realized if I take my glasses off, it looks like the Belvedere all the way through. Fun chase.
A guy that lived on my street had a '57 Plymouth. He claimed it was junk. I rode in it a few times (I was just a kid). He got rid of it around 1967. A '57 Plymouth was also driven by Vic Morrow in "The California Kid." If I could ever afford one, I might buy it. Many years ago, there was the shell of one in a local junkyard.
@@TheBrooklynbodine You can still get good/weird deals on them, my Belvedere ht was mostly restored for the prior owners son, but he got tired of waiting the resto and bought a Ford, the dad traded the Plymouth to me for detailing 3 cars for him. My convert was in a remote, hard to find place, the owner got buyer calls but no one else showed up, he sold it and a nice parts car for $50 each to me.
It's nearly 2:50 AM and I'm awake, not able to sleep. I'm an old guy and so loved car chases in the movies of the 70's but had never seen this one, not that I was missing anything except for the 2dr Plymouth changing to a 4dr Dodge. I found just now that it's on Amazon Prime movies (starring Kirk Douglas) and I may just have to find time to see it.
Not only changing doors number, but brand, the other car is a 1960 Dodge with "fake handmade tailfins" and side "sportone" to make it look like the Plymouth.
Also LMAO how the truck driver just keeps driving along..."hey you nuts, stop smashing into my truck! But if I hit the brakes, I'll be 30 seconds late, and the boss will be pissed!"
Not sure why the Citroen Estate owner is so upset. Such language, "You crazy sons of bitches!" Indeed! He can still drive it without the fenders / doors. The air horn is bizarre, more like a taunt rather than "make way!"
Yeah, the air horn has baffled me ever since I watched this as a kid, lol. There's another (more common, and arguably better) English dub where the Citroën owner says "You crazy idiots!", so, he's a bit more polite there. ;p
So the 1958 Plymouth 2dr hardtop does indeed morph into a 1960 Dodge 4dr sedan...with tacked-on plymouth-like fins and side molding! Good chase nonetheless.
The Opel also changes at least twice. It starts off as a car with a solid roof, then in the trip down the steps backwards it has a sunroof with a plate in it, banger racing style, and then when the little DKW gets dropped on it, it clearly has the factory sliding steel sunroof. I don't know why the guy wanted a car with a sunroof, it ended up as a convertible anyway. That must have been a seriously tough tilting barrier...
Nice to watch pictures from Hamburg in the 70th. St. Pauli Hafenstrasse, Michel, Aminckstraße and of course the harbour, the harbour and - last but not least - the famous harbour.
THE DUKES OF HAZZARD (1979-1985) took a lot from this chase. There are particular scenes (mix of action and comedy) that were reproduced in the popular television series.

The tailfins on the 1960 Dodge Dart were real. They weren't fake. They were not as prominent as the ones on the Plymouth, but this was a great car chase.
So I'm guessing the Plymouth was for the speed sequences but the Dodge was brought in for the demolition derby shots? At least they tried to disguise the Dodge's obviously smaller fins, which stopped short of the rear of the car. The chase also takes advantage of the fact that a Citroën DS's outer panels are made to be easily removable. Rear fender? 1 bolt, to ease rear tire changes.
I think Quentin Tarantino quoted this chase scene in the Once Upon a Time In Hollywood montage of Rick Dalton's Italian movies. There is a fake movie of Rick Dalton's called Operazione Dyn-o-Mite that looks exactly like this.
Not sure if he did, but either way, the chase scene during the "Operazione Dyn-O-Mite" part was recycled footage from the 1967 Italian film "Bersaglio mobile".
Eh, more movies had pulled this gag in the meantime. Most notably Brannigan and The Blues Brothers. ETA: Wait, I'm dumb, you're talking about the car hanging at the top. In that case, yeah, you may be right.
Know in days the camera is very shaky too much slow mo and I don’t care about cgi but damn it’s way too overused in the chases and it has some very stupid music that’s why car chases are now bad. Plus barley and drifting and no fast speeds with cool skeeek sounds. The only good chase from this era is probably baby driver and death proof. Nothing else stands out now

An incredibly well done car chase in all respects

What was the make and model of the other car, the one which was chasing the '57 Plymouth (and then '58 Plymouth) ?
@@thornimation5492 It is a 1966 Opel Admiral, according to the IMCDB

Measured in terms of gratuitous property damage, this ranks just below "Blues Brothers".
Yeah
This was a great laugh! I'd love to have a horn like that!
This is like Peter Griffin fighting that chicken. Lol. I like this.
You know, I'd love to see an actual car chase between Peter Griffin and the chicken. Peter would have his red Ford wagon. What would the chicken have?
Wasn't it fun finding the mistakes in the old school car chase s dam I love these movies
Looking at the fake fins cobbled onto that Dodge @7:30, I think George Barris was in the credits.

I'm assuming they didn't wanna wreck the Plymouth, so used a battered old 1960 Dodge 4 door for all the 'wreck' scenes.
2dr, 4dr, 2dr come on Christine make your mind Up ...’Show me ‘...
I feel offended for how many wine bottles were harmed during this film.
It's not a car chase, it's a tank chase.
The beginning looked like bar fight.
Camera crew @ 7:10 . Had to laugh at the end as the plymouth miraculously undamages itself!! Great chase, one of the best
I like the Plymouth changing from 2 to 4 doors and back to undented ,
Not only changing doors number, but brand, the other car is a 1960 Dodge with "fake handmade tailfins" and side "sportone" to make it look like the Plymouth.
@@riejurv50 well at least they used that to take the hits and not the old belvedere
True!
Let's hope the coupe survived the rest of the filming. Such beautiful cars.
riejurv50, great catch! I missed the fins, boy do they look silly when you look closely. Check out 7:30
Didn't people in the 70s and 80s ever learn to stop stacking boxes in alleyways?
Also LMAO how the truck driver just keeps driving along..."hey you nuts, stop smashing into my truck! But if I hit the brakes, I'll be 30 seconds late, and the boss will be pissed!"
justforever96 This is the German movie, what do you expect?
The car changed from a '58 Plymouth Fury to a 1960 Dodge sedan!
Probably tough to find identical backups to the main car...
Christine (1958 Plymouth Belvedere) in Paris France.
Man he couldve lost him if he didnt go down the stairs with him lol seeing that land barge get sideways is pretty awesome.
That goon is definitely on commission.

I never knew Christine is that tough.
LITTLE she’s indestructible!
Good spatial awareness by the stunt drivers.
This is not a chase, it's a demolition derby!
The Plymouth fury keep changing to a dodge polara.
Amazing how th e Plymouth changed from a 2 door to a 4 door in themiddle of the chase, whhere they destroy the Citroen... and then back to a 2 door

Okay, we're just getting silly now. We've been in Wile E. Coyote territory for a while, but this is corny as hell.
Wow, back when they actually had fins to make the car go faster!
More stability...
Christine won the Paris France trash national race !!!!. Trashed and still running.
No, the fins are for air flow, and stabilization .
The look on the guy in the Opel's face at 8:44 is utterly priceless. 😆
Anyone else notice how the plymouth changed models halfway through the chase?
This sure have some zany Jackie Gleason’s Smokey and the Bandit/Sheriff Justice and Junior’s ‘the top came off’ moment in here!😂🤣😂
How can we be sure that this was not an early episode of "Top Gear"?
It certainly was silly enough!!😳😰😎😱
Glad I’m not the only one to notice that the car switched from 2 to 4 doors
*_christine’s brother_*
what a fucking master piece.
Why didn't they just start out and stick with the 1960 Dodge for the whole sequence? That appeared more than the Plymouth.
At the end the Dodge goes back to a Plymouth, & undamaged too.
one minute it's a Plymouth, then it's a Desoto or Chrysler.
Christine changes from a Fury to a Pioneer....and back again....hmmmmmm
You can see the cars changing, one is a a Desoto/Dodge, other is a lovely 1958 Plymouth

Yes its cheezy, and the Plymouth morphs into a Dodge, just don't take it too seriously!
Blimey! That was bonkers!
The tailfins on the 1960 Dodge Dart were real. They weren't fake. They were not as prominent as the ones on the Plymouth, but this was a great car chase.
The real 1960 Dodge fins were augmented by phony, taller and more pointed fins to crudely resemble the 1958 Plymouth shown in the beginning.
So I'm guessing the Plymouth was for the speed sequences but the Dodge was brought in for the demolition derby shots? At least they tried to disguise the Dodge's obviously smaller fins, which stopped short of the rear of the car.
