thanks for posting this, totally agree, I play the photographer in this film that photos Dabny and Corbin, during the award ceremony on the steps of Vancouver City Hall, (you see me briefly at the bottom of the stairs holding the camera just after the flashes), and I was totally impressed (and surprised) with this chase and have claimed it one of the best since the first time seeing it. One very cool fact is that it was filmed in an area of Vancouver where the 1986 World's Fair was held, 'Yaletown' . All of those warehouses have been either extremely upraded to high-end shops, pubs, galleries, restuarants or have been replaced with high-end condo's, some in the ten's of millions, so it also holds a piece of history. Have always been proud of my very minor connection, largely because of that car chase.
Thanks for sharing your story.....I commented above that I'd actively searched for over a year to even find a copy of this movie... it was NEVER released on DVD... and it seems nobody heard of it... I managed to find a good condition VHS copy & had it shipped to me... it played perfectly.. so I took it to a business in town that converted it to DVD so it'll last... and no VHS "tracking" issues like back in the day. lol Great scene.. Good old American V8... sounds great, especially when the 4 barrels kicked in & it Breathes deep.... best part... NO CGI
Some of the movie may have been filmed in Vancouver. But that car chase was filmed in downtown Seattle. The viaduct isn't there anymore and in one scene you can see the kingdome in the background it's not there anymore. But it was definitely filmed in Seattle.

This IS definitely one of the best ever chase scenes, exciting & funny to boot. I've loved "Short Time" ever since I saw it when I was 19, & it's really a cult classic among folks who remember it. I never was much of a Dabney Coleman fan, but he was really great in this role, a kind of manic, desperate frustration that's so hilarious. I'm kinda surprised this was never picked up in the whole "80's movie redux" thing, it's got a ton of potential.
Carol Jones. They had a charm but you may be looking back a bit fondly. My brother tapped a pole with my sisters 78 Ttop Trans Am his first four minutes driving the car. It was wrapped in half around the pole. I used to drive those cars from Mavericks - Taurus. The 73-90 US bodies and drivetrains were mostly disposable. Cars didn't even get finished at the factory. Often dealer mechanics had to align doors and mount parts just tossed in the footwells before coming off the lines. Steel strikes and fuel targets caused factories to start using metal they once used for dashes and trunk linings. The sound coating of tar spray was to keep a door from denting as it rolled down the conveyor. The motors went out of tune constantly. When electronics were added in the 80s it got worse. The 63-73 cars were modern and tough. The 55-62 US cars were heavy metal and very simple but few were unibody and they all rusted a lot. Nostalgia is harder to feel when a young driver of the era is around. My favorite car of youth was a 1971 Cutlass Rocket 350 I got in 1978. The most durable car I've ever owned was a 1990 Mazda that went 20 years, 250,000mi on the original non rebuilt engine and clutch. Still looked fresh when I sold it in 2011.
I Will always Love it when you get a chance to get a side shot of the steel ramps up on rear end of the patrol car or something on the Duke's of Hazzard to the tires squealing and the cars are in the dirt 🤔 but I have been trying to get my car to do it for about 20 years 😂😂😂

In my opinion, Bullitt, The French Connection, and the Seven Ups, in that order, are the three best chase scenes ever filmed, past or present. Steve McQueen did all his own stunt driving, something insurance companies would NEVER allow a movie superstar to do today! And the motorcycle stunt driver was killed. Look closely at the first impact. A shot of him getting up afterwards was added to "mask" what actually happened during the filming.
I remember really good chase scenes in one of the Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood) movies, also White lightning (Burt Reynolds I think), and a Trucking one -- White Line Fever (Jan-Micheal Vincent) !!
I've seen so many "best" and "ever" titles with RUclips videos I barely give them a second look. However, dude, I believe that was the best ever car chase scene. Plus, it was hilarious!
Well I don't know for sure about your exact model, but on my 79 my radiator was well protected by design, about 2 feet behind that bumper and big ass piece of solid aluminum it was mounted too. I would of probably preferred a front impact over a rear where that 32 gallon fuel tank is, but I could be wrong.
That's back when bumpers were bumpers. Now they are recycled pop bottles and milk jugs. Oops I hit a bird sorry sir your cars totaled . Back then when you hit something you still could drive home .
Jesus Christ, the sound that Pontiac made when it hit the Diplomat was fucking awesome. One of the best crash sounds I've ever heard, I wonder if that was live on the set?
Not only is this scene great, but it's a great movie in general. Very underrated! It's the perfect mix of action, comedy, and sentimentality. It also has a great message behind it, about how to enjoy life and not take it for granted.
Thanks, I had forgotten this movie entirely. There was a great deal of awesome stunt coordination done here! You're right, it is an epic and awesome chase.
This is a pretty good car chase, but nothing tops the ORIGINAL 'Gone In 60 Seconds'......and I'm not talking about the lame remake attempt with Nicholas Cage. 'Bullitt' with Steve McQueen layed the foundation and set the mold for what an excellent car chase should be, but 'Gone In 60 Seconds' broke the mold and ran full speed to the all-time title of 'Best Car Chase EVER'
That was a slow-motion demo-derby lasting far too long. The acting, the editing, the pacing were all terrible. "Most Wrecks In A Film", okay. But hardly best car chase.
kawikahokulani The only problem I had with the Gone in 60 seconds chase was the music. Like this chase scene and Bullit, I like it when you can only hear the dialogue, the sound of engines roaring, squealing tires, and grinding metal.
DrBIeed Haha, You mean that synthesizer crap. Hahahaha! That isnt the real music, thats re-released junk because they weren't allowed to use the real music H.B. Halicki payed for...
This was very good, but I still pick Bullit #1. Borne Identity Mini Cooper chase is in top 10, as is Blues Brothers (various), Bourne Identity 2, and French Connection (although you can argue that is a car-train chase). Truly hard to pick an "unarguable" number one. Thanks for posting this.
this probably was not the best car chase but it is a one of a kind.it's may be top ten.you should give info about stunt drivers and stunt coordinator.they must have made a lot of good movies in Hollywood
Even though these cars are family cars and not muscle cars, it's still pretty good. and this goes to show you how much stronger a family car was back then. Family cars were heavier back then, but muscle cars were lighter than todays muscle cars and were faster, and louder with a deep tone. Not a bumble bee tone like today.
sorry guys you're all wrong. The best car chase was the original. 1967, Green Cobra Mustang vs. black Dodge Charger, Steve McQueen behind the wheel. "Bullet"
You are so correct Mylan Miller!! I knew I didn't have to post a new one, I just scrolled down to find the inevitable Gone In 60 Seconds (original movie of course) is the best car chase ever comment and piggy-backed on. That was the best ever car chase in film history but Bullitt trumps it only for style...NOBODY did it better than McQueen!!! R.I.P. Steve... P.S. for einwolfsrudel's comment below, notice it's spelled BULLITT not BULLET.
Arguably not the best car chase simply because it is used in a comedy, but comparing the comedy in this scene to the several chase scenes in Blues Brothers, this movie wins hands down simply because of Dabney Coleman's character's glee and zeal in elevating the chase to make sure he will die--comedy gold!! With an awesome car chase thrown in for good measure.
+Max Power That was Max Headroom, Max Power (We had a show with that actor hosting it. You prob know of it, yeah ?) And Yes, a bloody shame about that yogurt. What a waste, poor Burt.
I have a litmus test for Car Chase scenes. Do I want to see how it turns out? This passed that test. And it's pretty darn good. I just watched this next to Bullitt, which is the accepted standard. I'll choose that over this, but this definitely had some good stuff. I'm a little surprised I don't see any mention of Mad Max/Road Warrior in the comments. And even more surprising, no Blues Brothers?!? [oh - just read further - there it is]. Maybe they're not the best, but they're certainly in the conversation. Happy Friday, erryone!
Hahahahaha.......We had Dodge Patrol cars. What a piece of shit. Definitely the lowest bidder for police contracts. Rolling junk, brand new in the fleet. Veterans always asked for cars that could stay on the road. Rookies got the junk Diplomats that were constantly in for repairs. Tow trucks loved the Dodge Diplomats, it kept them busy.
I've never even heard of this movie in my life, but that has to be some of the most impressive stunt driving I've ever seen done. Very, very impressed. I love most of the car chases out there, but I would have to agree, this one is one of the best out there. I would say other very close contestants would have to include Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry and any of them from the Jason Bourne films.

+Luiz Dahoraavida lol V-TEC kicked in at 1:19 when that old wonky Chrysler 4 speed auto went into kickdown.4 speeds from the 80's are famous for dropping out like that for the kickdown.
What in the actual HELL are you talking about? chrysler never had a 4 speed (OD ) automatic until fairly recently, certainly not when this was filmed. The A500/A518 ODs came out in the early NINETIES Prior to that all Chrysler automatics (Torqueflites) had THREE gears, PERIOD.
I've seen the movie Bullitt. Whether that chase scene is better than this one is a matter of subjective criteria. I do know I enjoyed watching this car chase far more than I did the one in Bullitt. In fact, I remember how disappointed I was in the Bullitt chase after all the hype I had heard over the years about how great it was.
Bullit, at the time, was as spectacular as you heard, it's just that you've now been spoilt by what followed, in fact I happened to watch Bullit myself a few nights ago, and found it not to be as good as it seemed to me when it was first released. Even the length of the wheel spin let me see it wasn't fitted with a limited slip diff, but like I say, at the time, my mates and I thought it was the best thing we'd ever seen, it was after all, the 1960's.
swagonwheels That's the truth that car chase made me fall in love with cars ,at 8 years old N McQueen was my IDOL MY FIRST CAR WAS N 86 5.0 MUSTANG 5 SPEED EVERY TIME I STARTED HER UP I INSTANTLY DUMP THE CLUTCH N DO A HOLE SHOT FOR MCQUEEN, THAT MOVIE IS A LIFE CHANGER FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE N I WAS 1
+Shane Blandford-Scherr I'll back you up on that, I'm not sure what year specifically but it is a full size 1971-1976 Pontiac. I don't think it's a 1971, those had some air flow system (easily identified from the rear) which was canned after its one and only year.
It looked to me like he was trying to kill the Dodge Diplomat he was driving more than trying to kill himself. :-) That Diplomat is tougher than a dang tank!!! :-)
@@Believe231 @Matthew Alpina mine was an 89 (last year) and it would hit 140 in about 2 miles, they had high up shift trans missions with very tall rear gears. Damn car idled at 45 in second gear. As for tank, an M or F body Chrysler product will take one hell of a beating without mods

Yeah, the Blues Brothers is one of the greatest car chase scenes of all time, Bullitt included.
I remember really good chase scenes in one of the Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood) movies, also White lightning (Burt Reynolds I think), and a Trucking one -- White Line Fever (Jan-Micheal Vincent) !!
Cop tires, cop shocks, 440 cubic inch power plant...
I've seen so many "best" and "ever" titles with RUclips videos I barely give them a second look. However, dude, I believe that was the best ever car chase scene. Plus, it was hilarious!
Very well done, perhaps it indeed is the best one. Thanks.
Man why buy today's car when back than they had cars like this which were beast and even run on half broken engine lol
Yea that reverse was where you screwed up, front is BOSS though.
I had a 79 Lincoln Town Car BTW, with the opera glass, and I thought about doing the same thing with it.
Just realized, I watched this a year ago and commented on it, it's right under this thread, lol.
Supposedly the Dodge Diplomat/Plymouth Gran Fury are 'outlawed' in demolition derby because they are so stout.
Dabney Coleman....the badass!!!
Cars were a lot tougher back when they had bumpers.
The weight and power of muscle cars, no comparison. The best that Detroit built. Everyone in the 60's and 70' s loved these cars.
No they were built with steel!!! That's the difference!!
That's back when bumpers were bumpers. Now they are recycled pop bottles and milk jugs. Oops I hit a bird sorry sir your cars totaled . Back then when you hit something you still could drive home .
@@wreckerjonny6144 boy brother you nailed that!!
Bert! Your Yogurt! Lolol
Jesus Christ, the sound that Pontiac made when it hit the Diplomat was fucking awesome. One of the best crash sounds I've ever heard, I wonder if that was live on the set?
One of the funniest movies ever. Been looking for it for decades.
Not only is this scene great, but it's a great movie in general. Very underrated! It's the perfect mix of action, comedy, and sentimentality. It also has a great message behind it, about how to enjoy life and not take it for granted.
what the heck was the name of this movie sorry getting old thank you
@@az0970449Short Time
Thanks, I had forgotten this movie entirely.
Like this chase scene and Bullit, I like it when you can only hear the dialogue, the sound of engines roaring, squealing tires, and grinding metal.
kawikahokulani AMEN!
John Rosa You're not too smart obviously...
DrBIeed Haha, You mean that synthesizer crap. Hahahaha! That isnt the real music, thats re-released junk because they weren't allowed to use the real music H.B. Halicki payed for...
The stunt driving was amazing.
There are a few chase scenes that stand head and shoulders above all the others. This one is in that top group. Love it.
I love how calm they are throughout the entire scene
Sure, they are not the drivers of the crazy cars.
"Best Car Chase EVER"? Holy shit! I think you're right!
This is amazing! how the hell have we never even heard of this???? Laughing and awestruck at the same time!! Thanks for posting man!!🤩
I've never seen this chase or movie until now. Thanks for the posting. : )
this probably was not the best car chase but it is a one of a kind.it's may be top ten.you should give info about stunt drivers and stunt coordinator.they must have made a lot of good movies in Hollywood
This is the best funny and unreal car chase ever. But my favorite is 'Armour of god car chase'.
Such a fun chase scene that I did not expect when I saw it in the theaters years ago.
Gotta love the 70's. Pre- computers, the Internet, and cell phones.
Good one !!! Can't believe we didn't complain more about picture quality back then :-)
Much better than all that CG crap [ bloody transformers]
Even though these cars are family cars and not muscle cars, it's still pretty good. and this goes to show you how much stronger a family car was back then. Family cars were heavier back then, but muscle cars were lighter than todays muscle cars and were faster, and louder with a deep tone. Not a bumble bee tone like today.
Shortest 1000 round clip and never had to do any reloading we should be so lucky to have such a weapon in our military 😂
Cannot believe I've never seen this! Thank you
OMG, I've never seen this before but you hit the nail on the head right there. Best car chase EVER. That was AWESOME!
Never see a Camry or Civic hold up like these cars
The best Car chase was in The original" Gone in 60 seconds" but it was not Hollywood
so it is never recognized!
Gone in 60 seconds the original Last 45 minutes of the film was the car chase brilliant.
G60S yes i agree
sorry guys you're all wrong. The best car chase was the original. 1967, Green Cobra Mustang vs. black Dodge Charger, Steve McQueen behind the wheel. "Bullet"
@@einwolfsrudel That was great too, but this chase is like a demolition derby, but not in a arena but on the streets.
Wow, that was a great chase scene.
The uploader ain't lying...this is the best ever hahahah...how the hell did I miss this movie it looks awesome!
That 86 dodge diplomat got totaled by that pontiac catilina in the end.
Big ass pontiac.
This is great!!! The car chase from The dead pool was pretty good too
352 people forgot their yogurt.
Lol
+Max Power That was Max Headroom, Max Power (We had a show with that actor hosting it. You prob know of it, yeah ?)
And Yes, a bloody shame about that yogurt. What a waste, poor Burt.

Maybe not the best, but definitely up there…thanks for a reminder of this forgotten gem!
I rented this on VHS once, back in the day. Laughed my ass off!
The old Dippy is shedding weight so it'll go even faster.
hendo337 hahaha perfect!
Lighter is faster lol
I have a litmus test for Car Chase scenes. Do I want to see how it turns out? This passed that test. And it's pretty darn good. I just watched this next to Bullitt, which is the accepted standard. I'll choose that over this, but this definitely had some good stuff.
I'm a little surprised I don't see any mention of Mad Max/Road Warrior in the comments. And even more surprising, no Blues Brothers?!? [oh - just read further - there it is]. Maybe they're not the best, but they're certainly in the conversation.
Happy Friday, erryone!
pretty wild!
Bullit Sucks! I like this Better.
Crazy chase.
The french connection was good also
Gotta love the Diplomat!!
Plymouth Grand Fury
UPGF54860 yeah that diplomat was high performance screaming madness
Hahahahaha.......We had Dodge Patrol cars. What a piece of shit. Definitely the lowest bidder for police contracts. Rolling junk, brand new in the fleet. Veterans always asked for cars that could stay on the road. Rookies got the junk Diplomats that were constantly in for repairs. Tow trucks loved the Dodge Diplomats, it kept them busy.
Holyshizzle! Incredible stunt driving! Can't belive this is not ranked with the usual trifecta: Bullitt, French Connection, and The 7-Ups.
Oh man I absolutely loved this movie as a kid. Definitely have to give it a watch again
they sure don't build em like they used to
I bet they went through at least a dozen of those during filming!
Yes, back in the day when these rusted out right before your very eyes.
Full frame cars.
@@ronaldjensen8614 the diplomat is a unabody
Man, if Plymouth Really built cars that strong, they might still be in business! 😂😂
Actually it's a dodge
@@bigjumboballs Info says it was a Plymouth but who cares, Dodge Crysler Plymouth was all the same.

Or any other newer shitty cars, I love old American vehicles, and everything about em.

Try that too with US cars now!
Or Toyota
I worked at a video store in high-school, and this was one of the movies I watched repeatedly.
That's why the old car chases are the best! I'd watch the old ones over the new ones any day
Burt....your yoghurt!
Holy shit... that was actually awesome
goo
...and the concept for GTA is born!
Lmfaooo
Naw, this is Saints Row 2
I've never even heard of this movie in my life, but that has to be some of the most impressive stunt driving I've ever seen done. Very, very impressed. I love most of the car chases out there, but I would have to agree, this one is one of the best out there. I would say other very close contestants would have to include Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry and any of them from the Jason Bourne films.
Surprised I b upon clcikin on this vid to see its from "Short Time" ... been searchin for this flick for like 30 yrs. from time (lol) - always remembered I liked it alot & always wanted to see it again - Dabney rocks in this flick ... well at least i got to view this part & its been uploaded for nearly 10 yrs. - holy shitski's batman ! Glad u just never took it down.
As far as bein "A #1" in chase scenes - eh not everyone would think so but hey i kinda agree - in this case - its a great contender.
Grand Theft Auto cops in a nutshell.
4:31 V-TEC KICKED IN YO
+Luiz Dahoraavida lol V-TEC kicked in at 1:19 when that old wonky Chrysler 4 speed auto went into kickdown.4 speeds from the 80's are famous for dropping out like that for the kickdown.
nissans were pissing!
What in the actual HELL are you talking about? chrysler never had a 4 speed (OD ) automatic until fairly recently, certainly not when this was filmed. The A500/A518 ODs came out in the early NINETIES
Prior to that all Chrysler automatics (Torqueflites) had THREE gears, PERIOD.
He lost more parts to his honda making the V-TEC even more effective!
Brett Maki ever hear of a transmission swap
HOLY SHIT THIS GUY IS FUCKING CRAZY!
Short time!!! I saw this in the theaters. I loved this movie!
How the hell did I miss this one? yes -easily one of the best car chases I’ve ever seen!
He stole 50k but the damage the cop did is way more than that lmao
I've seen the movie Bullitt. Whether that chase scene is better than this one is a matter of subjective criteria. I do know I enjoyed watching this car chase far more than I did the one in Bullitt. In fact, I remember how disappointed I was in the Bullitt chase after all the hype I had heard over the years about how great it was.
Yeah, who double-clutches an upshift?
Bullit, at the time, was as spectacular as you heard, it's just that you've now been spoilt by what followed, in fact I happened to watch Bullit myself a few nights ago, and found it not to be as good as it seemed to me when it was first released.
Even the length of the wheel spin let me see it wasn't fitted with a limited slip diff, but like I say, at the time, my mates and I thought it was the best thing we'd ever seen, it was after all, the 1960's.
swagonwheels That's the truth that car chase made me fall in love with cars ,at 8 years old N McQueen was my IDOL MY FIRST CAR WAS N 86 5.0 MUSTANG 5 SPEED EVERY TIME I STARTED HER UP I INSTANTLY DUMP THE CLUTCH N DO A HOLE SHOT FOR MCQUEEN, THAT MOVIE IS A LIFE CHANGER FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE N I WAS 1
Oh Wow!, you lived our dream, what a great memory.
swagonwheels Thank you it was a Great memory
What car are the bad guys driving? It's cool.
1976 Pontiac Bonneville I believe.
+Shane Blandford-Scherr I'll back you up on that, I'm not sure what year specifically but it is a full size 1971-1976 Pontiac. I don't think it's a 1971, those had some air flow system (easily identified from the rear) which was canned after its one and only year.
Thank you, guys!
+E34Benzin Either a '75 or '76. '75 was the first year to have rectangular headlights.
Pontiac Catalina.
This really was a good chase scene! Also laughed my a$$ off while watching. Thumb up for posting. 😛
*Ok yeah this video description was correct, what a chase scene!!! Hands down the best*
It looked to me like he was trying to kill the Dodge Diplomat he was driving more than trying to kill himself. :-)
That Diplomat is tougher than a dang tank!!! :-)
I had the real deal when I was a teen, an '82 model retired mopar cruiser, had the top engine that year a 5.2L 4 bbl rated at 165hp!
Believe231 ,I bet it could hit 90 on the straightaways!
@@Believe231 @Matthew Alpina mine was an 89 (last year) and it would hit 140 in about 2 miles, they had high up shift trans missions with very tall rear gears.
