It's always a pleasure to learn from a pro who comes across like he's just another guy shooting in his garage across the street. Your teaching and instructional style is refreshing, thank you. Recipes, yes please.
Recipes no matter what I have just discovered your channel today. I have known of your work for sometime as a lighting master and I am thrilled that you have started making these videos.
Excellent, as always. Love the look of all (3) lights but to be honest, each individual light looks amazing. Your knowledge of lighting is fantastic. Keep making videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent.
These are truly some of my favorite videos…mainly because of the multiple looks you achieve. Even though I’ve been shooting awhile you should never stop trying to further your knowledge. Thanks for sharing your lighting knowledge.
I loved this one as much as I do love all your other videos. There is so much to learn even when you (or in this case I) are photographing for 30+ years. Thank you very much, sir.
Your teaching is so simple and easy to understand. Your use of light is astonishing, yet simple. I like the term recipes, mix the right ingredients and you have your masterpiece.
I really likes this episode. I like the look Nr.2 with the silver Umbrella (Time 4:37) plus the 4th light set up is great. I´m really new ish to this and this really helps. Thank you very much. Can´t wait to watch the rest. Regards Oliver

Hi Cody, Sorry for the late reply. I wanted to make sure before the year ended that I get back to every comment on all the videos in my playlist. I will look at doing a video on creating a lighting recipe this year.
Excellent video, thank you for all this pro information. These shots are all beautiful, but for me the third one with the hard light from the Tele-zoom reflector is absolutely dope !!
Love the show. Learn a lot every time I watch. I think you structure the information really well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I would love to watch a deep dive on creating lighting recipes and on metering. Keep up the great work
Another great video Ab! Like the Silver umbrella look with a balance of flattering look and stronger contrast with the background. Liked that you use the zoom reflector, and would look forward for future videos talking about hard light reflectors as they are seldom discussed (when to use them, why use them over other modifiers etc). Thanks!
Thanks for another terrific video. While I’m guessing most clients would choice Option #4, my favorite was #1. I’m a sucker for old Hollywood lighting, and the softness on your model’s features with the strong backlight and separation from background were a beautiful blend. (Runner-up: the drama of the hard light.)
I thank you for your wonderful sharing. This is my first time watching your viveo and was hooked. I went to instagram and saw your pictures. Great. I'm a newbie so tools don't have much if you have instructions for dealing with little lights or speedlights I find it very helpful. I want to see how professionals handle difficult situations to learn. Thank you very much
Awesome video! You also have great teaching skills! This will be the setup for my next maternity shooting 😃 I own three lights and not having to move them around and being able to create a full photoshoot with four different looks is a quite a beautiful thing 🤗 Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us! 🫶
This is awesome! I'm always looking for ways to increase productivity in the studio so I'm not wasting client's time changing up lights. I'm putting this in my options box and expect to use it a bunch! Thanks!
Hi Greg, I am so glad this helped out. Would love to see the results you get. Are you part of the Adorama discord. I have a room there you can drop images into.
@@AbSesayPhoto I'm not a part of that, and honestly don't know what that is. It might be a while before I have images to share. Still trying to build that side of my photography and sessions are rather infrequent currently. That's the price I pay after refusing to do portraits for most of the 20 years I've been a photographer. Lol! I was looking at my studio space earlier and trying to adapt this lighting to an 8ft ceiling. I think I can get it done.
@@gregkiserphotography Hi Greg to help with an 8ft ceiling I’d use a strip softbox behind and a photek soft lighter for the umbrella. The telezoom or a normal reflector with 20 degree grid would work fIne.
@@AbSesayPhoto you read my mind. I was planning on using my 1x4 strip box and I have the photek umbrella which is my thinnest one. The reflector and grid are easy. Thank you! I hope to be able to put it to use soon.
Already looking forward to Vol. 3. I would be interested in learning more about the proces that goes into building the setups for a certain look w. several lights and different modifiers. You make it look easy but it is an art to get it just right.
Great video Ab, as always! Very interesting variation of classic 3 point lighting...Hair, hard key and big fill...or 3 main lights each, I understand! I must say, you always have great models and make up / hair! And a good retouching, too😁 (saw some on XP). Please go on with this high-- level-- of quality! P.S.the new update for the D2 is really nice, helps with the new trigger in combination with B10 series. I think in a studio, with different Camera systems, Profoto universal controller is key. (Read it at previous comments) So do I. But I`m more old school😂. Thank you!
Thank you. You can, but it would look differnt. Going from a 13" source to a 20" sourcew will ultimatly look different and rigging it will need heavier grip.
cool video and thanks for sharing your experience. It's really difficult the choose my favorite light setting. I think all 3 (4) have their own charm. 🙂
I'll take all the options. Out of curiosity why not a Magnum reflector if you are that close to the model? I guess I have to try it out myself to see what the difference is. Excellent video as always.
Hey Ab great tutorial! For me I like the look one the most because it gives the sunlight effect. But i was having a little difficulty on how you metered in the very first example. You mentioned a 3 stop difference. Then you said you underexpose in the front 1.3 stops and the back by 2.5 I got a little confused there. Can you clarify the example with the actual f-stops?
Hi Trinicapone. Yes if the front of the model metered F5.6 then I would shoot at F9.0 this under exposing the front of our model. This causes the back of our model not to be over exposed as much.
I like the soft box with v-flats because the lighting is so soft and the best description is, "Heavenly." What was the make and model of the light meter? I don't see it listed in the description of the video.
Ab, great video as usual. For what she’s wearing, I like the middle look, the one with the silver umbrella and diffusion. But I like the option as you showed, to add in quick beauty shots with the sport reflector. For me, the first angelic, ethereal back light would be for another type of look. Question, does the new Profoto remote work with the GFX 100s, I notice you using that to fire the D2s for metering but using the old one for triggering when shooting? Also, I assume you upgraded your D2 firmware for the new remote. I have B1Xs so no full compatibility with power readout etc., as of yet if ever.
Hi Pierre. Love your input on which you prefer. I feel like the Umbrella is winning overall. Currently, I only have the new remote for my cannon and not my GFX, but I plan on getting a Fuji or Universal version this month. I shot this close to two months ago prior to the new firmware coming out. I upgraded to the new firmware this weekend and I LOVE IT! Being able to see the power each light is at is ver helpful.
some things are just not going to be possible with a 7ft ceiling, But there are many still like setups you can do. Doing beauty with you models sitting in a chair, stool or apple box, and its a great oportunity to work on floor poses as well. Start a Pinterest board with poses done on the floor.... and never be afraid of stepping outside. There is no light like the sun.
Hi John. I am very partial to the hard light myself. The magnums totally different. the Telezoom throws a solid 20-30 beam of light that is not to hot in the center depending on how you focus is, and still works great on heads with recessed reflectors. In my book it the sexiest hard light shaper ever made. It just hits different.
Great demo 😊and i learned something from your tips ... oh and I almost fell off my seat when I clicked on the link to the reflector 🙄 Curious if it's possible to manage a similar look to the tele reflector by using either a beauty dish or a bare reflective umbrella i.e. withouth diffusion (assuming it's silver)?
PS Although I kinda like all four setups I'd probably be tempted to try a combo of 1 and 2, and not just because I don't have such a reflector; I'd probably also change light setup 1 by either removing the v-flats or changing the ratio by moving the model a little closer to the background while slightly lowering power so we get less reflection from the v-flats, but hopefully still that "angelic" vibe and adding light setup 2 into the mix as my key with more or less the same power/distance to model. Also I might try light setup 1 as show in the demo with the reflective umbrella minus the diffusion, to add specularity, although I'd probably place this a lot further away from the model, likely behind the camera and to one side Perhaps these setups would also work, but then again I may loose the benefit of having all 3 one light setups ready to go ... and the ability to create a good variety of shots in a short space of time like you planned. Hmmm ... perhaps I need to start thinking more about my light setups🤔
To get a similar look id use a beauty dish with a grid or a normal reflector with a grid. You can also test sports reflectors from other manufactures as well. I find that this one works the best. I find it lighting characteristics very unique.
it would definitely work. The sofbox and umbrella or a combination of both for sure. The Telezoom would need to get pulled back for more even coverage, but a light meter would help easily dial that in.
I like the first single light set up the best as it is very subtle and the three light set up because of the crispness. it is nice to know the sports dish could be used in place of a magnum reflector. Thanks Ab and have a good new week.😎👍🇨🇦

The moody effect with the telezoom reflector is a win for me. I wonder if this can be done with a standard reflector or a silver beauty dish?
You can get similar results using either with a grid, but for me the telecom just kits different. Its my favorite hard reflector.

65" with a sock. I don't have the c-stand to get it up that high.
